Correction ** The wheelbase of the new model has grown by 2.4-inches and overall length has grown by 4.7-inches compared to the old model. The longer overhangs mean the approach and departure angles are slightly degraded for the new 4Runner at 32 and 24 degrees respectively compared to 33 and 26 degrees for the four-wheel-drive fifth-gen.

So as a mechanic Ill try to explain this the best I can, I see this as a 10-12 year possibly 150,000-200,000 mile SUV after that turbo will fail that's about a $5000 + expense if equipped with hybrid battery swap looking around $5,500-6,000 expense not to mention the other components on the hybrid system, if injectors fail sense its dual port and direct about least $1500 expense, I could could go on and on. so Its more complexity to make the engine work that adds up to keep it on the road equals to more money out of pocket. Yes Toyota is the better of the OEMS to drive however the reliability just started mean it took a long time to perfect the tech in cars and light suv commuter cars not mid to full size trucks so expect a lot of growing pains to come. I do agree there are 2 camps short term and long term but long term meaning is getting shorter the 5th gen will last 15+years because of the less complicated systems and more forgivable with maintenance, with turbos you really need to be on top of maintenance to pro long the life of the engine.

You won't regret keeping yours, I too love no car payments. I have a feeling the "old" body style is going to sell out pretty quick. There will be a large number of people that buy up the new ones then dump them in 3 years, and a large number of people that just want good old reliable. The one you have is probably the most reliable engine Toyota has ever made...other than the old 22r 4cyl from ages ago.

This was about what I expected. With the change of the powertrain and drivetrain I didn’t think they would go really bold with the looks. Still not sure how this compares with the LC and how its different but I prefer the LC. I can see people debadging these quickly. I still don’t like modern Toyota interiors. The dash is way too high and the windshield to small. Aesthetically pleasing but not functional

I like the overall styling but I freakin hate those massive black fender flares. Makes them look so cheesy. I am glad they didnt go with the blacked out A-pillar and roof. I am a bit crushed that they made the 4runner even bigger... it was already bordering on too big. First thing I would do if I got one would be to take the fender flares off and paint them the same colour as the body.

Can't say I am impressed, it looks more porky than athletic, the fact the dash board is dug out of the parts bin really shows the lack of investment in differentiating the 2, unlike the last 2 Gens of Tacoma and 4 Runner. Hard Pass for me.

I would agree with some of those videos but not all. There are turbo diesel trucks that have insane mileage on them and are reliable. It depends heavily on engineering and testing though, we'll see if Toyota did their homework. Regardless I agree to a certain extent, until these prove to be like the old Toyota tech, I wouldn't trust them just yet, I'd just trust them more than any other brand to do it right :).
@sammyjammy66475 ай бұрын
You said you like it, but you wouldn’t buy it in the video
@TheCarGuyOnline5 ай бұрын
Yeah maybe I should have been more specific. I really like the looks of it, the lines/interior/tech etc., but I personally fall more in the camp of someone that owns cars that have 100-250k miles on them, so for me I don't think I'd trust it to be a long term vehicle. If all of the sudden get a wild hair and buy a new car, or prices come down, I might buy one but I'd get rid of it at or before 100k. The old 5th gen 4.0L Runner was and is still bulletproof. I personally might be looking in to a used 5th gen. Currently I have a 2008 Sequoia with 230k miles, but it still runs like a top so hard to justify doing anything yet :).
@realname21585 ай бұрын
The only thing I don't like is that giant screen right there in the middle of the dash. I know most people love that tech stuff but for me it's just a distraction. Depending on the prices they want I may upgrade in the future IF they offer a decent service plan with them. I'm guessing just one of those headlight assemblies alone will cost $800+ or more to replace, some brands the headlights cost over $1000 each. Anyway, great video, very informative and the trail version to me seems like the best option but if it's at the $70k mark that will be a definite no sale with me.
@TheCarGuyOnline5 ай бұрын
Yeah here I am driving 16 year old vehicles with $9 halogen bulbs that work fine...so I completely get where you are coming from. At some point I'm going to have to upgrade but...I just keep holding out. I thought I would hate giant screens in the middle until I test drove different cars with them, mainly the tesla. I was surprised how nice it was, didn't distract too much and it's very nice with say, google maps nav + music on screen when you want them both at the same time...but yeah, repairs on any of these vehicles are going to cost a lot, and insurance is going to continue to skyrocket due to all the features/tech/MSRP issues.
