Thanks for the idea of using a diamond file to abrade! Never thought of that. I love working rainbow obsidian, the Mexican can be utterly amazing. My only thought is that I consider these like gem stones. You seem to go right at it bashing away. I spend hours reducing it looking at each hit to maximize the stone. I know you can’t make that long a video but some of this obsidian is just amazing. Mexican can fire without seeing through it - just nuts!

I absolutely lobe your commentary. I listen to powow music or shaman music while knapping. I was taught when doing hides to always think happy thoughts about how the animal must have enjoyed its life with its mother and friends, and just whatever comes to mind, so when i started knapping, i had to remember to think happy thoughts about the stone, wondering how it was created, or where it first was formed, how it got there, and did anyone thousands of years ago use it for something else, i dunno. Just positive relaxing thoughts. And music helps stay positive. Especially when do8ng obsidian bc i have broken every knife i tried to make and gave up on the stuff.

OMG 😲 OMG 😲 that is extremely amazing and beautiful material. Super-dupper-wowwie!!!! Im going to be watching this video in parts, busy today with errands. And it too early to have my movie 🎬 theater popcorn, until later. Plus we have the auction too. Yes, its Monday Fun Day!!!! Patrick what kind of music do you listen to? I listen to everything, but I'm terrible at playing the banjo. Definitely not as skilled as Willow Osborn. Great video 😮😊

The question to ask is what type of music I DON'T listen to. I have very bad emotional reactions to some music. I don't want to discuss it because it might offend. Mostly what I listen to is Rock music and "Techno" with little (or not understandable) to no lyrics.

That sounds good. I listen to the same. With some old jazz and big band thrown in, too. Old jazz and big band bring back memories of working in my Grampa's stained glass studio in the 80s. 😀👍

Hey kack, i have a challenge for ya. Several years ago i made a palm pad from an old tire's side wall. Its 3 layers. I glued and sewed them together and made a groove in the top layer. It works really gooder. But the only qualm ive had is some times flakes bounce out of the groove so it can be risky. But if i jold it at a good angle the flakes ricochet away from my face. Also, i jave to flip it ober to get the flakes out if the groove. I dont think the groove was necessary. If you het bored, made one and try it. A nice feature of a tire sidewall is it has a natural curve.

Hey Wes, am I thinking I'm strange In saying that I feel like I have more control of the "feel" of strike depth in flaking with a heavier bop with obsidian?? It seems like every time I try to use a smaller one it breaks, cracks, take out too much/not enough....or just bad results in general with a small bop.
@KnapperJackCrafty
@KnapperJackCrafty 3 күн бұрын
Not strange at all. I try to use small boppers, just to show the potential, but I also prefer the heavier boppers.

I used a utility knife to cut 1 layer out, shaped it to where it fit my hand comfortably and then rough cut out 2 more and trimmed them with an xacto knife. I thought glue would hold them together but it didn't so I drilled several holes and used fake sinew. Also, it's really handy for indirect for some really hard hits bc it supports the stone better. I hold my hand palm up and hold the stone down and then nail it. The copper hits the palm pad not my palm. I've done that with direct also. It's a great tool that won't wear out. And the price is right🤣

Oh and if you want a much stiffer palm pad sew a piece of car tire sidewall to a block of wood like yours. The only other drawback to using tires is on white or light colored stone it gets black residue on it. It washed right off but just as a caviot
