The aerodynamics never change. As soon as the rc car left the ground I knew it did the same thing as the merc. The join was not flat and for the same reason as hitting a rock you really should walk the runway and spot these kind of things before doing a top speed record run.

Hey Kevin. I think your problem may be rooted in the fact that you have so much power and rear end downforce for the amount of front end downforce, making the car want to pitch up. To combat this, there are a few things that I thought of that could work. Firstly, you can add some preload to the rear suspension and add to the front, which will make downforce along the entire underside of the car. Secondly, you could put vertical sides on the top of your splitter, kind of like aeroplane wings to improve the efficiency of the splitter. My third idea would be to drill a few small holes in the top of the front wheel arches (I’m not 100% sure if it would work, but it’s probably worth a shot),to decrease the high pressure region inside the wheel arch to remove any lift it could be creating. You can also try running a lower top speed setup on the rear (not with aero but instead maybe with gearing in the “differential”) so that if the front starts to lift, it will be brought down by the slower speed of the rear wheels. I hope these ideas help Like so Kevin sees.
@GoldenCroc

Mostly, it was the gap that did it, passing over it at that speed was ill advised from the start. Uneven surface is no joke at high speeds.

8:27 i think you should ask with some engineer or sth for a front wing. That would solve this problem, its not going to increase the downforce with weight, but with air. It maybe sounds ridiculous but your project looks really serious, and it deserves more development. I love it!

Love this project. On the outside, it's complete folly. "More power" didn't end so well for the tool man, ever. But what I love is learning about the process, the whole way through. You're working with stupid big rc gear, creme de la creme of the tech available. You consider all angles, you test, you destroy, you rebuild, you test. It's quite educational. I find a lot of these pieces of info quite useful in my much less power rc's. It works. Well! So thanks for what you do man, crash, or 203 mph., this is a hell of a ride!

Kevin, since you've customised so much of this car anyway, why not go the full hog and fit a custom body? The problem at higher speeds is that the pressure variations across the body are increasing and any slight change in yaw/pitch will amplify those effects and send the car into a spin. The new body should be a simple oblong with a rounded nose and a boat-tail at the rear to minimise base drag (no need for a diffuser then). You could have a slight slant on the roof to provide some down-force, which will increase significantly as you gain speed so doesn't need to be an extreme angle. Add a vertical fin to help with stability and remain in a straight line. Really stiffen the suspension to prevent bouncing, and obviously run on as smooth a surface as possible. You could still keep your original body, but it would be interesting to test them back-to-back and see what impact the aerodynamics is having. Good luck!

Would create too much drag. It doesn't really matter for hillclimb cars as those are built for maximum downforce for cornering. For a speed car you want as little drag as necessary while providing just barely enough downforce to keep it stable. If you want to take inspiration from full scale cars look at land speed cars, the concepts used there would apply here more than something from a hillclimb or time attack car

Hey Kevin. I don't know if you will see this comment but I believe I have a way to stop your car from flying. I suggest to distribute more weight upon the car. Take the Mercedes CLK-GTR that was racing in Le Mans 1999. When the car took off it would create a huge up force that caused the car to lift off the ground and fly exactly like your car. It had so much power but not enough downforce and weight to keep it from taking off like an airplane. Hear me out, the only time you would need to go lighter than heck is for an airplane as it needs to fly. Cars aren't supposed to fly, so they need to stay grounded. Just like the Koenigsegg 1:1, where it has a balanced power to weight ratio to keep the car grounded to put that power to the floor. I suggest to place metal plates or use liquid gravity like you did to that one boat a long time ago. Use the same principle with the metal plates like you did with your burn out car with the metal plates or however you see fit. You can also lower the car a bit more, and find a flatter smoother surface for your speed runs. Along with using canards on the body and maybe even an open diffuser for the front of the vehicle. It's like a spoiler for the car but it fits upside down and under the front bumper of the vehicle. I hope this helps in achieving your goal. Can't wait to see the next update to this cars performance. See ya soon!

Hey Kevin, big fan of your videos. In my experience, you’ll want to keep that toe-in in the rear to eliminate fishtailing. That way the rear tires will be pushing in towards the middle against each other providing more stability. Also, if you Velcro the sides of the body to the chassis you’ll reduce parachuting and save the wires next time. 😃

Hey Kev! Just making an observation here that might possibly prevent some of that air from getting up under the body, or at the very least prevent it from folding into a literal parachute. You might be able to drill 3 to 4 or more small holes on the left, right, and front side of the body as well as the chassis and run some fishing wire or something similar through it. This way your body won't fold back, and hopefully next time you get airborne it won't be so aggressive. You may also be able to fill some air gaps between the chassis and body shell with something like painters tape which i could only imagine would help that much more with this issue; and it may actually improve your aerodynamics as well! Second observation; Next time you go to this landing strip i would suggest starting off slowly at the smooth end, and then once you're on the black top you can ramp up your throttle as needed. This way, in theory, the RC doesn't get airborne, as i think that small ledge is what caused it to invert like an umbrella.
@spookz4469
@spookz4469 2 жыл бұрын
Also; Here's another idea that might be interesting for you to look into. google the Brabham BT46. The BT46B generated an immense amount of downforce by means of a fan. This downforce, Given you had enough of it, would in theory prevent the RC from ever going airborne as well as solve any traction issues.

2 things a top speed car needs to do, go straight and not fly. The vertical fins do a wonderful job of keeping the car pointed where it needs to. As long as your body does not create lift but a little downforce that is perfect for high speed. A big wing will create to much downforce as the speed goes up and all that drag will slow you down. The rear suspension was bottomed out at 100mph and he wants to go 200? Yeah to much rear wing.

Do a wind aero test using a builders scope and while increasing the air flow you will be able to monitor at what speed it the RC will start lifting up and calculate by adding weight to the front end. Do a road test on asphalt, concrete has expansion joints, you will flip every time on concrete.

First thing I would suggest is make your chassis all aluminum. I’m guessing that could give a little bit more weight to have your rc have more downforce in a straight line. Stiff up the rear shocks as possible too. It’s my guess. Don’t give up too. You can improve much better!
@orechris21
@orechris21 2 жыл бұрын
Hey kev, I know you want to build this with the idea of "more power more speed" but, consider taking my friendly advice. Try putting a front wing and a more effective back wing. Make the suspension stiffer ESPECIALLY THE BACK ONES and make the front ones a bit softer, so they compress exponentially with speed cause of the more downforce, so it will solve the problem of the car getting airborne.
@vicboom1880
@vicboom1880 2 жыл бұрын
The problem with wings is that they add drag and therefore lower speeds can be reached

Hi Kevin. This is very cool project. I think this car needs more down force on the front end. It will prevent it from flying away. I would suggest to install spoilers on front lower corners. Maybe it will be useful to add little weight on the front. Sticky balance weights for real car wheels will work perfectly. They are small, heavy and easy to work with. Will fit under the body shell.

Kevin I would like to see you get the car going again. I don't know if you can compete with a totally custom made car like the world record was set with. But it would be interesting to see just how fast you can get that car of yours to go. The thing I like about your car is that anyone can purchase most of the parts online and for the most part it's a production chassis. My two cents. 1. Find a smooth surface to run on. 2. Treat the area with some sort of traction compound. Grape Soda works. Or my favorite was VHT Track Bite that professional drag racers use. I mixed it 50/50 with denatered alcohol. Enjoy your videos. Roger.

Double standing backflip? Color me impressed! I feel bad for you Kev, it's hard when your RC crashes, and parts break! I don't know anything about speed run RCs, but could you fit a dragster-style wheelie bar? You know how on RC dragsters they have long wheelie bars to prevent this sort of thing and to keep the front wheels down. You,might not need such a long bar though.

Generally, you need suspension to smooth out the bumps. Removing it just makes the car (a lot) more bouncy. You can get away with no suspension if the surface is smooth, not sure it is (smooth enough) on any normal airstrip though.
@kieranmcmahon1745
@kieranmcmahon1745 3 жыл бұрын
Running no suspension will simply not work, as said already. One small rock and boom, every ounce of traction is gone, that car will flip or spin regardless of what happens then.

well it is true that to beat a speed run record you have to go faster than the last one ... so everyone has that part down right ... after that they all have some good ideas ... and the naysayers wont ever accomplish anything because they arent even trying ... from what he has done so far he has a good chance at getting the next record run ... he does need to get past the air lift on the front end ... learn something about aerodynamics will help with that .... and then find a nice smooth place to run .... he's a heck of a lot closer at getting 203+ Mph run in than most commenters on here if not all of them

a flat runway with out bumps will help a lot too. there's a few guys in my arrma group that have hit 170+ mph with the factory limitless body/chassis and some grp tires. but i agree better aero is always a good thing. he could also cut some slot in the rear to help trapped air not make the body parachute too possibly.

Drag strip a must, stand at the end of the 1/4 mile....Or long use a long straight on a motor circuit. As speed run veteran I feel your pain, it's awesome that you're compressing all the pain into one car though I'd stand further back as you get it going faster! Thought for the day do you really need those inner wheel arches? By putting those on your going into unknown handling territory. Hope that makes sense? e.g. who else is doing that for speed run cars?

It's been interesting watching the vid series, shame it suffered the crash owing to the quality of runway you had available. I've enjoyed seeing your eagerness and enjoyment over the videos. Do you know anyone in the RAF? It'd be interesting to approach a local base to where you are and write to them... from my experience they don't use the runways every day... and they'd be ideal as they're well maintained and perfectly smooth.

hey kev! i think you can sand the front splitter to make the air goes under the car a bit smoother. also the car could lost less speed if the front splitter is rubbing against the runway. and maybe putting canards to avoid it from doing backflip like the mercedes clk gtr.

a bit late I know but I think the scraping is good because as Raz does with his setups the front needs to be lower which you did for your first runs but after you raised the front to avoid scraping. The squat that occurred at these speeds may have lifted the front higher than the rear causing the car to turn into a wing causing the takeoff at high speeds plus that gap in the runway definitely was a big variable in the crash
@riothero313

The radio link radio can easily do 600 meters but you have to use 4s batteries. I run mine on 3s (3 x 16650 batteries) and I can get 500 meters, I havent tried any further. The radio really has a lot of features. My favorite is the fact that it has a screw hole to mount a camera under that rubber cap on top.

Down force down force down force. Fit that front end with fins that will direct the air evenly over the body and you can angle the front end aero down a bit. Add a small piston system if you wanted to the force while accelerating will push the front lip down to close the gap against the ground. And air that gets under it will send it. Amazing though this is so promising
