I try to explain by the book how to set the needle bar height but its only a approximate measure.. The most important mark is 2mm above bottom dead needle where the center of the ditch on the needle should be right where the hook is as the needle moves up to the 2 mm point. After I made this video I made another shorter video showing how to set it from bottom dead needle from a timing mark on the main shaft. But either way you need to remove your feed dog plate and feed dog so I dont see how you can reference that measurement with any accuracy. And it says it's only an approximate measurement. So I would think the main timing mark would be the best way to index lowest needle position. then I would run the needle up the 2mm and check the hook position to see if it's close to the center point of the needle and in the center of the needle ditch. The hook can touch the needle but it can have no deflection or you need to move your hook back a little. the book calls for a tiny space mine has a little space maybe .007 or so. Get some good strong magnifier glasses or a jewelers loop. These measurements are tiny.
And again the most important part is that the top measurement is an approximate and it's all but impossible to see where the hook meets the needle ditch and THAT IS the important point that needs to be set.
If your hook timing is off and the needle bar height is good your machine will not be able to make a stitch.
