It's firewood season and the hunt for hardwood continues! The kubota B2601 compact tractor is equipped with the Igland model 2001 skidding winch and the BRAVE Dual Split wood splitter is on standby out at the wood shed. The rain is coming down again but the forest provides some cover for me to get it done. Hope you will spend a few minutes with me here in the outdoors - the forest is coming alive with colours. Cheers!
A special thanks to our friends at Farmer Equipment Sales, here in Canada, for the use of the Igland Skidding Winch!

I can't decide if you are saving any time. The few saplings that you are knocking over could be cut down and you could pull a trailer to the wood and cut it in place. You can then pull from the trailer to split saving your back. Nice piece of equipment but I am not sold that you are working less. Keep the videos coming, you do a great job.

Great on the slower speed, I’ve been holding my breath. Things can happen fast... too fast when the revs are up. I run a Farmi 351 winch on an old 1956 John Deere 420. Just above idle and it’s a gas engine not having the torque a diesel has. Even if I fetch up, I reposition the choke chain, etc. Never rev up the engine as the ol tractor needs to be babied.

You made me jump a few time from my seat! That winch is impressive. But I am very curious how a 2000 lbs tractor can pull its weight so easily... The B2601 does not move at all. Is that all related to the winch anchoring system? Thanks!
@GPOutdoors
@GPOutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
Good morning Joe. LOL. That's a good question. I think it must be - I know I am supposed to have the back plate on an angle and when I drop it to the ground, the angled edge digs into the earth, so I think that must be what allows it to pull so much. I slowed the RPMs down this time too and it pulled much slower but still had lots of power and no change to the rpm noise. I like it much better as it felt more manageable for me pulling it slower. Be well Joe!
@tractorman4461
@tractorman4461 4 жыл бұрын
I'm glad to see you running the rpms lower. I seldom get above a high idle on the old home made one. The force generated through the gearing is phenomenal and seldom is it (rpms) fully required. I wonder if the model number number of the winch refers to capacity or something else significant in its design or use. Maybe the year of its inception...? Great fun video to watch GP, but boy I hate working and getting damp in this cooler weather.
@GPOutdoors
@GPOutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
Good day T! I feel much more comfortable running it lower. Power stays but it pulls in at a slower rate which is better for me. Not sure about the model number. The winch is rated to haul in 4,000 lbs. Far more than i will need or that my tractor will handle I think. Thanks again for the great advice my friend! Cheers!

A small but mighty winch! One question - how easy do you think it would be to add a 2” tow ball to the back plate? As the standard winter conditions in the UK are Mud, mud and more mud was thinking about a log rite fetching arch to winch out to the track and then add on the trailer gooseneck to the arch to haul to the milling site - of course becomes far easier if the winch can stay on the tractor. Thoughts?

You do have the PTO speed lever in 540 position rather than the high speed don't you??? That winch does seam very fast. Also you and our friend Mike seam to leave a lot of good wood laying in the woods. I am referring to the tops.. Those small rounds down to 1-1/2" are very easy wood to make, (block and stack) and could have been left rite on the top log and skidded out without any issue. The small rounds are also great night wood and work well to stuff the wood burner full for a long overnight burn.--------------------Loren
@GPOutdoors
@GPOutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
Good morning Loren - thanks for the great comments this morning. The tractor only has the one top speed of 540 but actually I reduced the RPM this time (a few subscribers suggested it) because the winch was so fast at 540. This time, it was much slower and I felt more comfortable at this lower speed. You make a good point about the tree tops and you are right, sometimes I leave them, and probably shouldn't. Usually if Guy and I fell a tree, we take everything and leave the small diameter branches for me to chip. But it's a good reminder for me today - thanks! Sometimes I get focused on the bigger diameter stuff. Cheers and all the best!

@@GPOutdoors that's where an old buzz saw comes in handy !! LOL. They are built for quick work of the branches. If a fellow had a stove in the workshop, pole wood is absolutely perfect to use. It dries quickly in just one season and releases its energy in the small stoves quickly. At least by chipping them, you're benefitting from them in another way instead of stacking and burning.

Hi Michael. To be honest, it doesn't matter IMO - if it is caked on heavily, then I always give it a brush off with my hand first to make sure there are no sizeable pebbles or little stones hiding in it but otherwise, I just cut. My last chain lasted me 4 summers. Cheers!

Great video GP. That is really one winch that packs a lot of Pep. Wow. The only concern I have is at a slower rpm is this causing any damage to your tractor? My 2018 J.Deere 3025 is not under the Tier 4 Emissions and doesn't have the DPF filter. I know diesel engines perform better at a higher engine speed and i try to keep mine atleast 1800 - 2200 RPM's. It might not hurt it, but I'd look at the owners manual just to confirm it's okay. Take care GP.

Good morning and thanks Dean. That is a great point - I will check and will also call the dealer too. I didn't hear any change in RPM or anything while skidding them in. Guy had mentioned that if it is too low, I will hear the tractor complain (LOL) or sound like it is slowing down or wants to stall. Thanks for the great advice, as always. Cheers and enjoy the weekend my friend!

@@GPOutdoors I think the higher minimum rpm requirement is with the larger tractors fitted with the tier4 emissions and then primarily only for the first 50 hours. But do not take that to the bank. Good day Tim! This model of the Igland winch is rated to pull 4,000 lbs. When I pull something really heavy, the tractor will start to roll backwards until the back skid plate digs into the ground (you will see it is angled to dig into the ground). I have also backed the skid plate in behind a stump when pulling something really heavy. The B2601 only weighs about 2,000 lbs. So far so good for me. Hope that helps. Cheers!

Howdy Gord, man, I can just smell the rain in the forest. Bet that smells great. Igland sure put a lot of thought into that skidder. Nice having the back plate so you don't run logs into the 3 pt hitch. How many feet of cable do they give you on the drum? Looks like 1/4 or 3/8" rope to me. BTW, do you ever get earthquakes up there? I was watching your vid on the Stihl backpack blower last nite and we had a M4.5 earthquake that felt like somebody ran into the house with a semi. I was only 5mi from the epicenter. Really shook the place, but was over in about 8-10 secs. No damage. They had a 5.0 and 4.7 down in the central valley today on the San Andreas fault. Hope that doesn't migrate up this way. My place is 100 yo this year and is on a brick foundation, so I don't need any major EQ action. Anyways, another great action video from my favorite Canadian (next to Mike Holmes). Until the next one, Cheers my friend!

Good morning Tim! It is very calming being in the forest when it rains. Sheltered from the wind and the wet but able to hear the sounds. Pretty soon the leaves with be gone though. I think it's 3/8" but not sure - 115 feet long. I ran it on lower RPMs this time as a few folks suggested and I liked it much better - doesn't pull as fast, so it felt more manageable for me. Happy you weren't hit too hard by the quakes. we get small tremors every once in a blue moon, so never much to worry about here. My daughter is living in CA now so always a little worried about her but she's fine through the fires of late and the quakes. She was not close to them. Hi Scott! I only had it on loan for a while from Farmer Equipment Sales. I loved it - so easy and quick. Worked really well. I hauled 5 logs at once one day. Very powerful little unit. I have never tried any other brands so can't compare it but I gave it back at the end of the season last year. I'm missing it now though. LOL. Cheers!

Thanks so much for the feedback Michele. So nice to hear - I often have folks say they are too long so I was trying to shorten them, but perhaps I should just make them and hope most folks will be ok with whatever the length turns out to be. Thanks again and have a great week!
