after having watched a few more videos (and also this one a few more times) i get the impression that the duelling tubas transitioning into into a full band quilting party is a somewhat practised bit; thought it still feels spotaneous since most of the tuba players had their instrument down when this started. so my current theory is that someone a little hyperactive started the whole bit and since tuba players in general are a bit crazy (i'm including myself here) everyone just went with it and over the years the rest of the band just learned to go with it as well since there's little arguing with a hyperactive tuba player (again, i'm including myself here). also i sadly missed an opportunity to get a hold of a Conn 20J myself two weeks ago... i tried to sort out shipping with the seller when someone else showed up who was able to pick it up themselves... it's a wonderful instrument, i had a chance to test play one some time ago and the recording bell tuba i already own just doesn't stand up to it (thought it still beats every sousaphone i played so far).
