20notEZ EDS-88A and some capacitor testing

After a "failed" cap kit, try to use new ESR meter (EDS-88A) to see if the problem is a bad "new" capacitor. Wild goose chase ensues but always learning by experimenting so figured I would share anyway.
Maybe it was the battery in TPG tester, maybe I missed something , or maybe just magic but everything works in the end.

I only go with Panasonic or Nichicon caps. If a premade cap kit doesn't exist with those brands, it's not hard to see what microfarad and voltage it is to make your own. When building my own on digikey, I leave a note for each cap and where it goes on the board when making the order. Or label your order and save it for later as "Sanyo 20ez".

I agree. Go with good manufacturer caps from reputable dealer. If I was doing a ton of cap kits, I would build my own but just find it easier to buy a kit.

Also you need to discharge all caps for a good reading and not doing so can damage your tester...

The EDS-88A automatically discharges the capacitors but valid point.

Most ESR meters and capacitor leakage testers don't test the capacitor under "LOAD". They have these resistor, diode, LED network capacitor leakage testers that will add in a LOAD which they got these networks on google. You should look into this and make a video lesson about it because a capacitor will test BAD ESR and BAD leakage test but under a LOAD it test GOOD.

Yea, Sencore makes meters that measure dielectric absorption and leakage but they aren't cheap and I am not sure they are worth it for this hobby as it is cheaper to just replace the caps if you are in doubt.

@@jacklick they have on Google a current leakage tester that is two resistors a diode and an LED and somehow it loads the capacitor that's in circuit when you're testing and if the LED is bright then that means that there's leakage but somehow it puts a load on the capacitor or ESR meters and leakage capacitor meters they're testing it without a load so I guess you get false positive results and that's the thing is I'm not sure what ESR meter or capacitor leakage tester that has a load and you can pick different loads and the tester try to look into that on Google the the resistor network with the LED and their call is called the in circuit capacitor leakage tester and it's really simple to make it's too resistors a diode on an LED or something

@@jacklick why it's good to test all the the coupling capacitors and an arcade boards is because of all 50 of them for each IC chip there's a there's a coupling capacitor and if all 50 of them are leaking just a little bit or you know mildly or even maybe not a medium leakage it draws a lot more current from the power supply and that's why you get a dip and you have to increase the voltage in order for it to compensate but that's why you have to have a in circuit capacitor meter that test is it with load a lot of them don't do that so you'll you won't be able to find all the coupling capacitors that are bad or which ones are good because you're going to get

It's not looking for shorted caps, it's looking for high resistances in capacitors. Rare to find a shorted cap and the do come rarely. I agree ebay caps not good. Panasonic or Nicon is best....min my shop I have panasonic caps...

The DCR cycle tests for shorted capacitors. EDS-88A tests both DCR and ESR.

I don't know where you bought your caps. but all caps I have ever purchased from ebay don't pass the esr test. that is why stopped buy caps from ebay. but you have nichicon, that is suppose to be good. though if it comes through ebay it probably was store for long time in the desert.

Thanks for the comment. In this case, I don't think my issue was caps after all but I was anxious to show/share my learning on how to use the EDS-88A. I agree though, buy caps from reputable source.

What doesn't make sense to you, you should get to learn about capacitors to understand why they react that way...

Lower the esr the better..the kit is not any good...get quality caps..

Generally, Yes. However, the caps could still be in spec (you have to compare ESR to the spec of the cap) and operate fine in these circuits. There is typically no switching power on these old monitors so one would have to know more details of the circuit (operating frequency) to know if low ESR is really required. Good luck in your repairs.

This new toy comes from a company who do not support their product. You cannot get hold of anyone and the other thing they sell is the leakseeker and that also is a junk and a joke. Buy tried, proven brands who has tech support contact info and back their product

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience; I have never needed to contact them. Many of the tools I use are vintage, used and out of support anyway. What was your trouble?
