If anyone has more questions about anything in the video or otherwise, I'd be happy to answer some of them. I spent a couple of years living in Jerusalem, first in a yeshiva (rabbinical school) to become an Orthodox rabbi, and then as a citizen after making aliya (becoming a citizen) and working as a core staff member for a Birthright trip provider. I also worked as an industrial mashgiach (kosher certification rabbi) in the United States for a bit. Almost half of the scenes of this video were shot a couple of block from my apartment. This was my life, my reality. For a while. Two years ago, I had a series of epiphanies that led to a full-on crisis of faith. My entire world opened up. Since then, I've moved back to Seattle and have been working on building a new life in the "real world", and it's definitely been a ride. Damon, thank you for putting this out. It's crazy seeing something so intimately familiar from an outsider's angle: both yours, and now mine.

Closing off the community from the rest of the world does not happen in every ultra orthodox community. Aside from that, I’ve been to Israel many times so it’s really cool to finally get the other side of the story. This seriously has been so fascinating!

I can't wrap my head around it since my christian mother accepts my jewish boyfriend.
@rachelb65656 жыл бұрын
Alexa barbieri it’s nothing personal but the Torah doesn’t allow a Jew to marry out (a non-Jew). In the case where a Jewish guy marries a gentile woman, their offspring are no longer Jewish. They are essentially cutting off future Jewish generations. As noninclusive as it may seem, these are just the facts. Judaism is the most beautiful religion and relationship, and in order to preserve it we cannot assimilate.
@karlabaudelia54746 жыл бұрын
Muslims as well however a bit different. A Muslim male can marry anyone, but Muslim female have to marry a Muslim. My Husband is Muslim and I am Christian.
@Grassfedlex6 жыл бұрын
Rachel, it doesn’t “seem” noninclusive, it IS noninclusive. The fact his parents will disown him when we get married over religion is extremely sad and heartbreaking. I could never disown my child for marrying outside my faith, what kind of religion is that? It doesn’t bother me anymore but rather makes me feel bad for the orthodox community as they look down on regular Jewish people who don’t goto temple, wear wigs etc. so trust me I don’t take it personally. They miss out on so much because of their religion. I live a full life because of my beautiful, non judging faith.
@rachelb65656 жыл бұрын
Alexa barbieri you’re right, it is noninclusive but what I was trying to explain is that it’s not because we think we are better than others or that others are undeserving of intermingling with us. Rather, by intermarrying we are marrying out of our religion, cutting off future Jewish generations, and lessening the Jewish people. If we love our religion so much and wholeheartedly believe in it, how can we do that which our Torah directly prohibits? You are wrong in your assertion that our experiences and enjoyments in life are limited due to our religion. The Torah is the ultimate guide to the perfect and best life-anything and everything is included in it. I understand why it may seem that we judge others as less than but it really is not the case. I cannot speak for every Jewish person but that is not what Judaism is about. We live our lives according to God and His commandments and do so with love and joy. When it comes to levels of observance, to each his own. It is not up to us to judge others’ doings or non-doings. However, unlike other religions that conform to modern day ideology to please everyone, we haven’t. We won’t change what the Torah says or our beliefs of what is proper and right. Accordingly, one of the major truths that we have always known is that we can not intermarry. It is something we can not accept because it is and always has been explicitly prohibited to us. As much as there are incredible people who aren’t Jewish and who’d like to intermarry, we can’t change the facts. This is no way means that we look down upon gentiles or do not respect them. In fact, there have been numerous gentiles who have helped save Jews and the like who are known amongst us as “righteous among the nations.” I am sorry for your position and I can understand how difficult of a situation you must be in. But the assertions you’ve made based off of your situation are false. I hope you understand that.
@karlabaudelia54746 жыл бұрын
Rachel you make a lot of sense. Some religions look down on opposed religions because they continue to believe in what their word ,(Torah, Bible, and Quran) strictly tells them to believe. They have every right to believe it because in their belief it's the word of God. For example modesty is shown in all 3 books as a gift to the Husband that should be kept even in the Bible. It says that a woman should not cut her hair and wear modesty clothing etc. But although culture has chosen to disregard these scriptures it's still there the word of God doesn't change. We as humans change it for our own personal interest. Which would explain the different denominations within one religion specifically Christianity: Apostolic, Jehovah's witnesses, Pentecostal, Catholics, Baptist, 7th day Baptist...etc.

Hal da Costa because then you would cause an electrical kind of connection using electricity to stop the elevator to a certain floor and since religious jew’s aren’t allowed to use electricity on Shabbat they made a way around it, differently if you only go inside the elevator and it is already moving up and down without your interference you kinda “aren’t using electricity. @@sjx5120 ah okay. I'm tempted to point out some flaws in that logic but I won't argue with tradition lol
@patrickturner1366 жыл бұрын
It has to do with "performing labor" on Shabbat. So, for example, flipping a light switch is performing the labor required to turn on the electric lights BUT if the lights are already on BEFORE Shabbat and you leave them on all the time, then you have not performed any labor. Similarly I've seen families who set a timer to turn on a stove before Shabbat. They then put dinner in the stove (again, before Shabbat) and the timer goes off the meal is cooked and they eat it but never actually perform any LABOR during Shabbat. (I guess pulling it out of the stove is excluded :D) So it has to do with "working" on the sabbath. Pushing a button on the elevator is doing "work" to make the elevator run. If the elevator is already running, then no problem.

Damon the Israel and Palestine series are the coolest content ever produced by you! For someone who is fascinated by different cultures and history that was fantastic to learn and "try" to understand their point of views. I say try as I imagine is almost impossible for someone who has no connection to capture how important is all of this for them.

14:52 I'm assuming the answer to that would have to do with religious patriarchy... or ahem, misogyny normalized by religious doctrine. Growing up Christian, I was taught that women had *no* place in ministry, meaning women becoming pastors/deacons/any leadership position in the church was considered blasphemous, according to the bible. Part of many reasons why I decided to leave religion behind 🤷🏽♂️

A lot of churches don't follow that anymore, I went to a Lutheran church growing up and my minister was a pastor. The president of the ELCA is a woman as well!

@@kirafaust3619 true, I'd say almost all churches are secularized nowadays and don't follow old testament teachings. Otherwise everyone's going to hell for mixing 2 types of fabrics in their clothing lmao

I just visited Israel recently and spent a lot of time studying the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. I personally think that Damon did an incredible job at showing the diversity and complexity of the population and their standpoints while maintaining a neutral position. I hope you continue this format in the future because it gives everyone the possibility to truly understand other people without having to have the privilege to travel everywhere!

I think it's important to add that Jerusalem is pretty much the only city in Israel like this.. everywhere else in Israel it's much more secular and modern. so in other cities you don't have to dress modestly or be scared of "disturbing" Shabbat or anything.

The majority of Israel are POCs. Lots of people don't understand that. I live here, we are middle eastern people and a lot of our ancestors were kicked out of our homeland and spread to Europe that is why a percentage are mixed with european and have pale skin. There are North African, ethiopian, and latina israelis who all live here together and without intimidation :) I myself am a caribbean israeli and i love being jerusalem

@@racheldee7484 That is so amazing and yeah I totally was not aware of the mixture of people I guess! However, I'm also coming from just the woman perspective in that I don't feel like I could do what Damon did. Intimidating in the sense that I can't solo travel here, but maybe I can? There just seems to be a lot of restrictions and very limited rights with/without a male presence.
@racheldee74846 жыл бұрын
@@juliannanichols You can definitely solo travel! it is one of the safest places for women, egalitarianism (equality) in the communist beginning is a core value that israel was founded on. Me and my girlfriends solo travel all the time, I go to and from Jerusalem very regularly and never feel afraid even walking in the middle of the night here, you feel safe because there is a big sense of community here

Sophia Muroff Tel Aviv and Jerusalem are not acreflection of your typical Israeli city and lifestyle. It is nice for the camera tho, I think toutist will be shocked (bad way) and bored (no attraction) in the vast majority of Israeli cities
