💰What I bought (frame of reference of prices)
Paintings: €40-80 each
Brown Sofa & White Méridienne: €100-€150
Lamps: €30-75 each
Rugs: I spent €400 total for the pair
Golden magazine rack: €65
Green baby statue (lmao): €220 ish
Vases: You can get these from €5 all the way to €100+ euros
🚬 Sites and places to go
I bought half the stuff from this site: leboncoin.fr
Where to find the flea markets happening that day: vide-greniers.org/75-paris
Porte de Vanves (hit or miss prices but 10x more affordable than the more famous flea market at Marché aux Puces Saint-Ouen)
Emmaüs Neuilly sur Marne (there is another fiftten minutes by foot called Neuilly Plaisance)
Emmaüs Riquet (A clusterf*ck to be honest. World War 3. But inside of Paris)
Art museum gift shops (You can find all kinds of unique items)
Banque de l'Image (Friendly and helpful store for poster and framing needs)

🎨 Tips
1. It's all about the trays and layering. The knick-knacks.
2. One-of-a-kind items like big nose sculptures (lmao) are unique and interesting. If you're drawn to something, perhaps you should buy it?
3. Rugs and curtains tie the space together and make it feel more like a home. If this apartment hadn't come with those beige curtains (and if it didn't cost €500 to redo them), I definitely would have bought burgundy baroque curtains to give it more of a castle vibe.
4. Spend your money on things that will take up space (a big rug, a sofa, a big painting). You can get knick knacks like frames, bowls, and vases at flea markets.
5. If you can get a view, get a view. No possession is worth more than a beautiful view you see every day.

Damon should literally be the shining example to everyone on how important it is to curate your environment. You're attention to detail, narratives, and experience are beautiful. I've been watching you since I was twelve (I'm 20 now, lmao) and I've found it inspiring that wherever you go, you find the beauty in every place, and if it's hard to find it, you create it. It's like you said here: it's a little pleasure. Sure, you can waddle through life being a bit more complacent with your surroundings but literally why would you if you can be happier where you are. Life is beautiful but it's also ready and primed for shaping. It's clay ready to be worked by eager hands! All this is to say, I appreciate you and all the hard work you've done to get yourself here. Félicitations Damon.

So true! My friends and I shared this rathole, but we always made sure it was super clean (took out the trash almost daily, mopped the floors weekly, scrubbed the bathtub weekly and so on). Filled it with home-cooked meals, friends, plants and cute pets and candle lanters . It was the most awful place I’ve ever lived at apartment-wise, but it still felt like such an amazing home with so much warmth. A place can look amazing, but not feel like hime at all. You’re so right about what you voiced in your comment :)

That spiel about your $9 bowls and les petits plaisirs really hit different. I've been conditioned to always buy the cheapest things and now that I'm not strapped for cash it's so hard to unlearn that to prioritize those little things that I'll be surrounded by every day. Or I keep buying the cheaper thing only to hate it and go buy what I actually wanted! I know caring for yourself shouldn't have to involve money but also this is a different type of self care (like how many times do you buy something nice for a friend but would never get that thing for yourself?!)
@damondominique

Kritika! Hey! I mean I won't say it doesn't hurt when I'm at the cash register, but to be honest, after a month of using them, you'll realize it's all fine and you'll be happy. After all, they'll probably last for years, so while it's expensive, it's not...unreasonable!

@@damondominique Hey!! Haha yea still gotta save that cash for traveling.. but yes I've often heard, of all the things we lose, we miss money the least. Of course, not true for everyone in many contexts, but after a certain point, there's so many more things that are worth more.

I invested in a set of $200+ towels and it was a game changer. You shower every day why not have luxury. I also got a $2k mattress and great sheets. I’m on the hunt for the perfect pillows. And I upgraded some of my dishes and it brings me joy everyday. Plus buying artwork from all my friends and having it around my apartment! I’ve been at my place over a year and when I renew my lease I plan on painting all the walls I’ve been desiring too and buying furniture pieces I am missing. I love my place and it feels like a home compared to everyone else I have lived. Invest in your home and things you’re going to use all the time. It’s the best investment compared to other purchases. You can have them forever or years and years potentially!!

I related so hard when I read your comment, growing up in a middle-class family, I felt guilty to even ask for things that aren't the cheapest or not absolutely necessary. Now that I can handle my own finances, it feels liberating to spend money on things that make me happy. Also, got onto buying myself gifts occasionally which makes me feel loved too.

For me the most profound and interesting part of the video was from 18:27 - 18:55, as you can really see how vulnerable Damon is here, where he realises that all the years of hard work and dreaming of living in a home where he can be his true self and live in a place that feels like an extension of his personality has been finally realised. It's a small, subtle moment but beautiful...or that's what came up for me anyway aha! Beautiful video Damon, I'm happy for you! I've been renovating and redesigning my home for the last year as well, after years of wanting a place where I could call home. So I know that feeling of when you look around and you're happy at everything you see and excited to live in it! :-D

I also took Rita Konig's Create Academy course, and really enjoyed it. I especially appreciate how Rita avoids the usual trap of decorating homes to a particular taste or style; rather, she provides practical advice on how one can decorate their home according to their own taste. (edited to add): I think it's really great that you picked interesting dishes to use. From my personal experience, I've had the same sensible plain white china since living on my own many years ago... never bothered me until spending 2-ish years at home, I am getting really bored of them and am ready for anything else!

You may be a long way from Indiana, and you look like you are doing comfortably well. I don’t know, girl. I do not think I could be happy looking out my windows at a bunch of ancient housing projects, but you do you. I gots to have a house. Tu dois acheter une maison en France, ma fille. J'espère que vous trouverez plein de voisins pour apprendre à vous connaître et vous tenir compagnie.

also, it's awesome to see you and jo, even tough you're not together anymore, but just to see that you both created roots somewhere, you've got something like the apartment you were looking for, i'm just happy for you damon, for you two really. that's one strange and funny thing about our times, you two have influenced so much but you don't know me. anyways, bisous damon, cheers from brazil

Dude I’m so excited for you! I’ve only been following you for a few years, but this is such a huge come up. Especially with all the trouble you had getting an apartment in the first place. I love that you invested in pieces for your new home that give you those little moments of happiness. It shows you are feeling more permanent and settled. It’s great to see.
