Hand washing cheaper clothes keeps them alive longer. Just a tip for those who have them. I have shirts for $8 from Ross that have lasted me years simply because I take care of my clothes. I get my jackets and blazers from thrift stores as well as a lot of my jeans. If you wash in the machine, hang dry. The dryer is the enemy I swear. 😅❤

Love this! Taking care of your clothing will make it last longer. I'm 100% with you on the dryer 😂

I hand wash 90 percent of my clothing. Washers just really ruin items in my opinion.
@EricaBallStyle
@EricaBallStyle Жыл бұрын
@@mercedes523 I used to do this but just don't have the time anymore. I do think if you can, hand washing is the BEST. The second best is mesh bags and hanging to dry or dry cleaning.

Exactly. It's not where you buy, it's how you care for the garments you buy.

Tailoring and alterations are game changers. Altering a garment can make a cheap garment look expensive because it’s fitted to your figure. I would also add a tip for those who have sewing and design talent - thrift flipping is another way to help save money. I’ve seen some very talented content creators who took outdated garments and turned them into dupes from luxury designers and fashions from more expensive stores like Madewell and Reformation.

i bought brunello cucinelli shoes for 130 euro and lovely silk top for 50 euro (just as an example). it takes a time to find a good deal but i like to wear my things for decades so to me it’s worth to make an effort.

Agreed! Great advice. I'm in the process of creating a wardrobe based on my personal style, quality, long term usage, versatility and is somewhat minimal. I have created my own "style standards" I follow with new purchases, and when I do purchase something, I remove a piece, whether that's selling it or donating.

Our equivalent to Daffy on the west coast were Loehmanns stores, but they went out of business in 2014. I still miss that store.

I forgot about Loehman's. When I first moved to LA, I used to shop at the one near the Bev Center. I still have my white blazer that I found there. That was a good store.

There's a saying "buy less, buy better" which really rings true today. Quality lasts. It's a shame because garments used to be made by hand for both men and women, with high quality fabrics and details. Things that you could honestly buy in the '40s-'60s from a department store you can't even find today because turnover is so high at place like Shein, Zara, H&M, etc. At least for women there are still style options, but as for men today it's horrible. Partly, because of how casual the world has become for men. At least women can still look great! Good video!

Thanks so much for your insights. It seems like awareness around capsule wardrobes, sustainable fashion, and investing in fewer high-quality pieces is starting to seep into our culture more (at least more people are getting interested in at least talking about slow fashion vs. fast fashion). Even with fast fashion brands being so available for people, I hope we are moving towards better quality and less items.

I have to say something here. I have only been able to afford so called fast fashion my whole life, but with careful selection and even more careful washing and handling, I have a closet of sometimes garments that are 30 -40 years old. I can shop my closet for any era 😂😂😂

Usually high quality equals a higher price tag. I'm like your sister. I buy items I can afford and I have lots of things to wear. I guess I'm a quantity vs. quality person but I do understand your logic.
@EricaBallStyle
@EricaBallStyle Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment Katherine. The trap a lot of women fall into is that they buy more lower quality pieces that they end up not wearing because they don't last as long or they end up not liking them. If you wear all of your items then it sounds like the wardrobe you created works for you.

I keep buying everything too large. An unexpected weight loss coincided with the advent of vanity sizing, I suppose. I retook all my measurements, but everything is coming back so big on me, it’s not just oversized blazers, which I wouldn’t buy (or anything else that says oversized). I feel like brands are constantly making things bigger to accommodate American women’s increasing size without hurting their feelings, but I can’t rely on size charts, it seems.
@EricaBallStyle
@EricaBallStyle Жыл бұрын
This is definitely true. I think that's why a lot of women's brands now have sizes XXS and 00.

True ! Recently in Chico's - it has it's own sizing system ; never tho't I'd ever be a size 0 ( zero ) ! 😂 Wish women's clothes were sized similar to men's . We all know our measurements so why play ego games w/ women's sizing ? ! Be body positive , own it & wear it proudly ! 🥰

@@cynthiajohnston424 I totally agree! I feel like European women own it more. That's why their sizing runs truer to size.

I lost a lot of weight too and am having the same frustrations. I don't care what the size is--just give me something that fits. Don't live near any nice stores so I am stuck buying online and returning.
@littlemom2070

I am beyond frustrated. I haven’t changed that much in size (5 feet and around 106) and decades ago used to be a size 4 or 6. Now I’m a Petite 0 or 2 in dresses and size petite 0 or 00 in pants! My actual waist measures 27” yet my best fitting jeans waist size says 23”. I have an old belt from Talbots Sized Medium and it’s the same length as my “extra small” belts now. And way better quality too, not that cheap coated leather that looks like plastic. The constant returns online are such a hassle. It’s made shopping for clothing a nightmare instead of fun.
