In this video, we will talk about 21 ways you are hurting your cat without realizing
Feeding your cat the same food
If you feed your cat one particular type of food for their entire life, they can develop a very strong food preference for that single brand and flavor.
Brand preference is no big deal until you need to change your cat’s food. Even if you think that you won’t change your pet’s diet, you can’t predict when a medical diagnosis might require dietary changes. For example, many cats face kidney problems as they age which require a change of diet.
If you give them the same food all their life, it can be very difficult for them to accept a new food.
Using physical punishment
Although there may be situations that make you lose your patience, it is important to remember that punishment should never be the way to discipline a cat. It doesn’t work. It actually does the opposite of what you want. It causes them stress and they will only become afraid of you.
Cats do not understand the reason for your anger. When you punish them, they have no idea what they have done wrong. And because cats don’t understand that certain behaviors are undesirable, punishment may feel random and inconsistent to them, which can cause them stress, anxiety and fear. It also brings distrust of humans. They can begin to show rejection or even aggression toward you.
One of the best ways to discipline a cat is to reward them when they do something right. The reasoning behind this is that the cat will associate the good behavior with getting a treat.
Lack of hygiene
Cats are very clean animals and they spend a lot of time grooming themselves. A dirty environment makes them stressed and even irritates them, especially if it is concentrated in places where they often hang out, like their litter box, their bed, and their food and water bowls.
A food bowl with leftovers that has a bad smell, a litter box that has not been cleaned, or a dirty bed, will provoke cat-like anger and unwanted behaviors, such as insistent meows, hisses, and depositions in unsuitable places.
Yelling when your cat misbehaves
Yelling is another thing you should never do when disciplining your cat. IYou're just freaking out your pet. Especially when you are upset about something that has happened a while ago. Cats live in the moment and are incapable of associating any punishment with an action that occurred in the past.
You assume that your cat is happy to sleep all day.
Cats are born to kill and hunt prey. We are bringing these natural hunters indoors into our small homes expecting them to live happily without exercising their instincts.
If you don’t provide them any constructive way to exercise, engage their hunting instincts, or mentally stimulate them, your cat will develop behavioral problems. They will get bored, accumulate a lot of energy, making them stressed and anxious.
Letting your cat eat everything
Most people give their cats human food, thinking they are being caring. But, giving cats human food isn’t good for them. Your cat’s digestive system is very different from yours just as their nutritional requirements are different. Make sure to avoid feeding them human food.
Sticking with dry food
Many cats don't like water so they don't drink enough of it. Because of this, they are more prone to developing urinary crystals and even kidney problems. More often than not, this can be prevented simply by adding wet food to your cat's diet.
Thinking That Cats Always Land on Their Feet
This is a common misconception that often leads to injured cats because many cat owners take it literally.
Never ever hold a cat upside down and then drop them to see if they manage to flip over. And make sure your cat doesn’t have access to open windows, and that they can’t fall from your balcony.
Every year, animal hospitals treat cats who have fallen from great heights, often out of windows of multi-story buildings.
Assuming that cats are low-maintenance
As with any other pet in your house, cats need particular care with their vaccinations, deworming treatments, suitable hygiene, mental stimulation, socialization and physical activity. Neglecting any of their needs can lead to health problems.
Assuming indoor cats can’t get fleas or other parasites
Fleas and ticks can cause skin irritation, severe allergic reactions and even carry diseases and lead to serious health problems in your pets. And you can’t assume your indoor cat is safe from pests. Doors open and window screens aren’t foolproof. If you bring in ticks or even mosquitoes, your pet could be exposed to heartworms, Lyme disease, or even the plague.
Common signs that a cat might be suffering from a flea infestation are intense and frantic scratching or biting, patchy hair loss, or lethargy.
Simple monthly preventive medications and anti-flea treatments will kill any fleas that may have found their way onto your cat.

having a pet is wonderful. when i was a teenager there was a stray cat that would wait for me to come back home from school and it made the days better knowing i would have a friend waiting for me. a few years ago i got a dog and it was the same feeling, it made me happy to wake up in the morning and it was so happy to see me when i would come back from work. both times i was in depression and it felt like my pets understood me better than my family and friends. i think my next pets are gonna be a couple of birds. im happy your dog helps you feel better and i hope you completely get over depression.

Our various cats have all responded differently to being scolded, but it worked for most of them to train them. We took in a cat that never heard "No" ever and she just is what you'd think of when you hear the word "undisciplined". She acts up and does absolutely whatever she wants. The other cats know what No means and respect the few rules they are given. Normally our cats respond very well to being told no. We have had some that ignore you when you scold them, and others so sensitive that they run and hide and get all sad when scolded, but it normally is something that cats easily learn and accept and they become much better behaved from knowing there are limits and rules.

when we first got our rescue cat she was terrified of the word no. If said it quietly and gently she would run upstairs and hide under the bed. I have an extremely strong bond with my cat. He trusts me totally & acts similar to a dog. He comes running when I call him. He waits by the door when I leave. Stays in the bathroom while I shower, goes on walks into the woods with me & rides in the car. He knows to stay on my right when we go up stairs. He's a flame point Siamese & he's extremely intelligent. He knows when he does something he shouldn't & even plans on it when I turn my back. He sleeps so close to my face his whiskers tinkle my cheek. Its also true about the dental hygiene. I didn't know until I had to spend $1,000 on dental care. Buying a good quality cat food can help keep them healthy as well.

I disagree with the issue of cats knowing/not knowing what they have done wrong. I have the easiest, most gentle & sensitive cat in the world. @@l_ifeefi_l1998 Interesting comment; however, it’s obvious that for the purposes of this video we are speaking in terms of behaviors that relate to household norms in domesticated cats - tearing up the furniture, climbing the drapes, etc. I have even observed hungry feral cats at their food dish outside my window in the middle of winter allowing each other to eat first rather than greedily gulping down the food. They would courteously allow one another to “eat first” and would rub each other cheeks lovingly! They do have their own norms for behavior out in the wild too, but when they are in our homes they know how to adjust to ours.

The very few times my Juliette has done something unacceptable, she's always responded to VERY gentle scolding, clearing my throat, or even just a disapproving look. She always comes back a minute later and apologizes, and never repeats her transgression. By and large, she is perhaps one of the best-behaved cats I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Doesn't scratch at the furniture, walls, or carpeting. She won't even jump onto the furniture except for my bed. Yes, I know I'm the luckiest mobile can opener a cat could ever have. Whomever the human piece of excrement that abandoned her as a kitten lost out on an amazing pet - but perhaps they did her a favor. Fun fact: positive reinforcement not only works for cats, but for most animals, and humans too.

Regarding water, my ginger tabby (passed away on January 12, 2022 at 18+ years of age) was an indoor/outdoor cat. He always preferred his water outside sourced from the tap in a large container. There was something about the water being outdoors and fresh where the water level was near the top of the container (an old stainless steel steam pot). The height of the water in a large container kept his whiskers from touching the sides. I think he also liked how it seemed more "natural" in an outdoor setting. He did eventually die of kidney failure. I miss him.

yeah as someone who has a cat, it really isn't as big a deal as having kids. There are so many more ways in which you can, on purpose or not, destroy a person emotionally that don't affect cats. I could call my cat whatever horrible swearwords or insults, and as long as I'm petting her while doing it and talking in a sweet voice, she doesn't care. She knows her name, and maybe five words and that's it. She's really sensitive and definitely picks up on my emotions, but doesn't think any of it is her fault, she just seems to feel bad for me and tries to comfort me. She has no social live, or education that I could mess up. She's also way more self confident and looks after herself.

This has happened with mine. She's old and sick though so I've decided I don't care. I'd rather have her than anything else so she's worth it. But, same kind of deal. She always got dry kibble until a few months ago after I found her keeled over on the edge of death. I had to use the wet to get her medications in her, but now she won't really eat much else. Little bugger! hehe! Ah well. It might be expensive as hell (probably a couple hundred bucks/month on canned food alone), but I don't care. She's my best friend. I'd buy it for her no matter what it cost. :)

You must discipline them sometimes. Our kitties know the stove and kitchen counters are no-cat zones. If they go someplace that's dangerous for them I hiss at them. They understand hissing. The big cat's not happy. It works if it happens right in the moment and they can easily associate it. It's also incredibly important to follow on with positive reassurance once they are out of the no-fly zone.

Even if a cat does land on its feet after falling a long way it can cause seroius injuries. 1 of my friends kitten fell or got pushed of a 3rd floor balcony and ended up with broken hip and legs. She survived but was in pain for months. heard 1 of the kids shout the kitten has fallen off the balcony. so ran down the stairs as fast as i could and found the poor thing on the concrete. took off my jumper and wrapped her up as best i could to stop her moving before i picked her up and rushed her to the vet. i was babysitting so had to ring the mum to get home as fast as possible. Poor thing was only about 10 weeks old and suspect it was the boyfriend of the oldest kid that pushed or threw the kitten off the balcony. Poor thing was purring to try and get rid of the pain. Puring isnt just when their happy its also what they do to relieve pain. i noticed when i had torn ligaments in both wrists and a hairline fracture in 1 elbow after falling down stairs when a cat sat on them and purred my pain went away. the purring relaxes them and humans reducing stress and the vibrations have a healing effect on painfull areas just like painkillers do.

One of my cats (former "stray" for a number of years prior) thinks of vomiting as a competitive sport. Mostly after he inhales food. Even back in his "outside" days, if I'd put out a whole can, he'd inhale the whole thing, then vomit it back out minutes later. So I'd have to split it into small portions and babysit him for the duration whenever possible, even now. Unless I dole out food a spoonful at a time, it's like living with the Cheddar Goblin.
@pheart2381
@pheart2381 Жыл бұрын
my cat sometimes gobbles food to make himself vomit deliberately if he has a fur ball ready to eject. Maybe yours gobbles because he had food stolen off him by other cats? Try putting his dish up on a table or worktop? He might feel less cornered. you can always put newspaper under it.

@@pheart2381 Naw. They share the same bowls/dishes, else I'd be throwing out twice as much food. Both are finicky and would put Morris The Cat to shame. Just yesterday, Cheddar Goblin vomited up a dry sausage of just food (pate + dry), and by the time I came back with paper towels to scoop it up, he re-ate the damned thing. Gaaaah. But nope, no hair mixed in. And even that was unusual, as they rarely touch the crunchies unless they're on a hunger strike from wet-food (pate, shreds, chunks, "extra-gravy", no diff).

i agree everything else but the first one. you can change your cats diet anytime. a lot of cats may not like their new food yet, but they will, it only needs patience. start mixing the new food in the food your cat currently eats, and slowly start putting the new food more than the other, and slowly start to reduce the food your cat is used to eat. if your cat has kibbles available 24/7 that may also distract the cat for diet changing, surely they will realize you have mixed new food to the old one and just eats kibbles. when you give your cat their meal take the kibbles somewhere not reachable for your cat until they eat the food. if it doesn't seem to work, try taking them away whole actually, when they have kibbles all the time they probably are not that hungry to eat their meal. if your cat loves kibbles you can mix some of it to their meal too, or give the kibbles back when your cat gets used to their new diet. for some cats changing a diet might take a long time, but patience is the key, don't give up :) Idk if this comment was necessary but i wanted to share it

The food thing is so true, I got lucky that when my fifteen year old cat developed kidney disease I was lucky enough that it was a brand just like the one I already fed her. But she won’t eat ANY other food other than a bit of cooked chicken or ham every so often no matter what. But my two kittens, eleven and eight weeks old respectively enjoy a broad range of foods in different flavours. I generally stick to the same brand although I vary up the flavours every mealtime and usually buy the occasional individual mini-can or sachets of something different entirely such as brand, or if I have jelly and gravy based food at home I’ll get fish terrine or pate to constantly vary their mealtimes. I admit I enjoy seeing them react to different flavours and types of food. They have different personalities too. Nala is a confident natural born hunter and enjoys getting dry food treats one by one as I toss them so they skitter across the wooden floor for her to chase and eat. She requires much more work from me in terms of play. Shadow plays for awhile then settles for a nap but Nala still wants to play. On the other hand Shadow loves her food and tends to seek me out to nap on or against more.

You should probably stop, to decrease the risk of them under-drinking and getting health issues. Even though it feels natural for us to do, it may make cats feel like their water is not really clean, and only drink when they are really thirsty (obviously dying from dehydration is not an option, but drinking somewhat too little over time could still do damage over time)

I rescued one of my cats in China after my rescue organization got word that a kitten had fallen from a 30-storey building. She was about 3 months old at the time and had to have major surgery and spend the next three months in a cage (1 month prior to surgery and 2 months after). She suffered major facial injuries, permanently lost her sense of smell, had trouble with one eye that required eye drops for 6 months before it got better and broke the top of her leg, which required surgery to remove the ball part of the bone that fits in the hip socket (the joint is now formed by scar tissue after the bone was removed.) As a kid I had a different cat who broke her leg in our garage somehow, and that was only a normal one storey garage. So cats are definitely not fall-proof.

We grow up with cats in our lives, and realize there are still things to learn about them!

When I am feeling a very strong negative feeling like sadness or anger my cat will come snuggle me to make me feel better. I got him as a Christmas gift I love him so much.

This was a good video, but cats DON'T need their teeth checked once a year. That's ridiculous as is the assertion that if a cat throws up once a week this is something that needs to be addressed by a Veteranarian.

Yes. Once my little Hanzi threw up, and I decided it was from hair. So I am very diligent in coming their hair, and he never threw up again. They are Chinchilla cats

Thanks for the video, but I've had cats since I was a child and have two now. The Do know when they do something wrong if they are told and scolded, and I have shouted "Stop!" to my cat sand they know and will get off the table and still show me love and purr on me. They understand more than you know and when told by a shout or in a stern way they get it and will stay off the table (and when they know I can see them and when they hear me coming I can hear them jump off - sneaky!) LOL

I tell my cat "No" and point my finger at her when she does something wrong. As soon as it happens. I keep my voice firm.

One of my two cats KNOWS she is doing a few specific things wrong. She goes into escape and evasion mode the moment she breaks into my office, and knows exactly where to go so I can't get to her to pick her up. She knows I don't like it, and she enjoys my frustration.

Don't ever under estimate a cat..they are clever. My cat's understands the word NO... A few weeks ago one of my cat's wanted to sit on the windowsill I said no as my other cat was there and this one pushes her off. He was sitting beside me, I had to say no twice.the third time I said no ( just no) he bit my hand and run straight away out the room. He knew he had done wrong.( it really hurt) 10 minutes later he was back....wanting to be petted, he was so loving ❤. How can you be cross with them... I have started to turn my back on him now when I say No..seems to work.🤞🤞

About the first thing- my cat demands changing her food regularly. She gets bored and will stop eating it as usual until I get her a new one. Which I understand, I get tired of the same foods too

Another one: NEVER LET YOUR CAT PLAY WITH STRINGS, RIBBONS OR ANYTHING CORD-LIKE UNATTENDED. My cat swallowed about a 16" length of fabric ribbon and nearly died. She got a linear foreign body obstruction where basically her intestine bunched itself up trying to pass the ribbon. In order to remove it, she needed surgery that cost $3000.

I have always lived with cats, a lot of cats. Rescue cats, kittens born by my cats, a full house. I believe they understand much more than we give them credit for. They sense our emotions whether grief, happiness and everything in between and act accordingly. If one is upset, unhappy, grieving they will give extra love, if your world is falling apart they will feel disoriented. If you rescue a frightened, abandonned, starving kitten it will sit quietly on your lap while you are taking it home. Often abandonned kittens will find you '( if you live in a house). They will copy your behavior ( i had a cat who used the toilet as a human). I also believe they understand words. I talk to my cats, i sing to them especially if they are ill, i communicate with them. I have an incanny feeling when they approach their end, even when my vet doesn't see it coming, i feel when they have fever. I don't believe in physical violence even when they poo where they shouldn't. It generally means they are disoriented. They bring me gifts: dead mices, birds, rats ( twice) and even a bat! Cats don't like loud voices so shouting at them will have no result. Animals respond to love so never forget to be kind to your pets, they will give it back and you will all be happier. Just operate from a place of love.

My two cats were playing with each other running here and there inside my room. Told them to stop but they kept on going as if they hadn't heard me and when something fell and created a loud noise they both looked at me and then I went to the door opened it and without telling them to go out they went out slowly with their heads down.

I agree. My cat knows when she is doing something wrong. And she knows what the word “stop” means.

My cat was always that type of cat who vomits often. Sometimes once a week, sometimes nothing happens for months, sometimes 2-3 times a day. I always thouth that this is not normal, I asked a gazillion times about it to lots and lots of vets, and every time I got the same answer that if he has a good appetite and behaves normal, it's OK. I tried everything: antiacid pills, cat grass, raised plates, anti-foaming plates, everyday combing in the springtime and autumn, anti hairball paste, not changing the food often...Nothing helped, but my cat is 15 now, and his playful, likes to eat, blood sample tests said he's perfectly healthy. I don't know what more can I do for him, but I am open to hear a solution.

This happens to my cat as well. Sometimes she throws probably 4-5 times a week. I asked the vet about it as well and they had no concern if there were not health issues. I think she is just eating to fast. But the cat is very healthy overall
