I think the point of "Just stay in your crease" being vapid is a good one. I don't think it needs to be either-or. I think of it as a risk-reward play at the end of the day. You have a similar mechanic in Baseball as well. Players can try to steal a base by standing a few steps out of the plate. But they have to be ready to jump back, in case the pitcher catches them unaware. It's a pretty important strategic element of the game. This is, in essence, the same thing. If a non-striker wants that advantage of a few extra steps (reward), then there better be a risk associated with it. The same way if a striker wants to reap the benefits of standing outside the crease, they better be willing to face the consequences (stumping). There HAS to be a potential consequence associated with stepping out of your crease because the batters ARE gaining an advantage. Perhaps not a ton, if only done once. But over the course of 5-6 overs of consistently stepping out of your crease, it might result in 3-4 extra runs. That's significant. Why not embrace this aspect, and make it a strategic part of the game? For ex, you mentioned fast bowlers being less likely to affect this kind of a wicket. So? Fast bowlers also don't get people stumped. That could be a good time for the non-striker to steal a few inches by stepping out. If they do it with spinners, they better study the bowler really well. The same way, fast bowlers can work on hiding their intent on a particular delivery to catch over-stepping non-strikers unaware. Over time, both forces will balance themselves out, and it could become a pretty normal, tactical element of the game. Just like throwing a wide to induce a stumping. Knowing what that consequence is (as every cricketer knows), you can't complain about it after the fact. Yes, it was an anti-climactic end. But that's not enough of a reason to claim "unfair play", or call a player's character in to question. Every sport has anti-climactic ends. The whole argument is whether being "out" is the appropriate consequence for an over-stepping non-striker, or whether it should be something less serious (negative runs as a few folks have suggested). That can be debated. But as long as everyone is aware of the current rules, it does not make sense to argue whether it's within the "spirit of the game". For me, edging and walking is part of the "spirit" of the game. Clearly, not a lot of people do it. There will always be ideological differences with something as subjective as "spirit". If it's a significant enough problem, and enough people agree, then change the rules.

Just adding to the well rounded discussion. Well done Pezz and Higgos. When I was growing up in the mid 90s and 2000s playing in the gullies/streets of India playing cricket… running out the Non striker was seen as an act of cunning and deception. A skill. The non striker was seen as a fool for leaving his crease. This, to my knowledge, larger remains the case today. It’s part of the culture. We are as text book as it gets as a cricketing fraternity. I mean Tendulkar is the embodiment of text book. Dravid in defence. Kohli in those delicious cover drives. Dhoni and Sehwag the opposite hence why they captivated. Point is… we love cricket to the letter. We also love all its different expressions. We truly do love it. This is why… “The Mankad” is seen as an acceptable form of outwitting your opponent. We hate the cheats. But we do celebrate all who fit within the rules of the game. This is who we are. When the switch hit happened… I remember some western purists huffing and puffing. Debating the legalities of it. I remember a celebration of the stroke across all playgrounds. It expanded our imaginations. It was magical. Traditions are made and remade all the time. Expressions of cricket are ever expanding. Outlaw running out the non-striker and you’ll see it disappear. Till then… it belongs in the game just as a batsman’s stroke hits some fielder’s boot and pops up for a catch.

I don't agree with the suggestion that there should be run penalty instead of out. The point is how important is it to stay in the crease - when striker steps out he can be stumped out, when bowler steps out while bowling the striker will be not out even if he is bowled. So if the non- striker is out of the crease, why shouldn't he be out if the bowler can pull it off. Or let me reverse the scenario. If mankading isn't allowed, no-ball should just give an extra run but out should be out and stumping shouldn't be a form of out

#asktgc Here's my take on the MANKAAD issue : Third Umpire already checks the no-ball. Lets have the 3rd umpire declare that as a SHORT RUN whenever a non-striker leaves the crease before the ball has left the bowler's hand and they complete a run. No need for a dismissal. Once this change is made, those non-strikers that are in a habit of leaving the crease early will end up costing their own team runs as it will be given as a SHORT RUN. Their own team will then have a talk with them to stop doing that. That's the best incentive for non-strikers to stay in the crease until the ball has been bowled. This way, non-strikers won't be able to get away with this as they do now because bowlers don't want to do this cause of the pressure and also fast bowlers can't do this. THAT SHOULD SOLVE ALL THE PROBLEMS SURROUNDING IT. NO MORE STIGMA, NO MORE PRESSURE OF WHAT PEOPLE WOULD THINK, NO MORE UNFAIR ADVANTAGE. Also I think its better than 5 run penalty which will definitely be thought of as too extreme by many people. THOUGHTS ????????....................................................................................... Also I think 5 run penalty could solve another problem with cricket - that of limited reviews/referrals(DRS). If a side has no reviews left, they simply have to accept bad decisions as they lost the power to overturn them. So lets say each side gets limited no. of free DRS reviews - say 2 in ODI's. once you squander those, you have more reviews that you can take but if you get those wrong, other side gets 5 runs. THIS WAY, YOU CAN GRANT EACH TEAM WITH UNLIMITED REVIEWS BUT THEY HAVE INCENTIVE TO ONLY TAKE THEM WHEN THEY ARE REALLY SURE so as to not waste time by sending everything upstairs.
@kushagramaheshwari22822 жыл бұрын
No this implementation is very mild and will only delay the inevitable controversies in future where the non striker just wants to cross because he is the batter and striker is a bowler will misuse this. Currently where ICC is almost outlawing the practice of crossing this feels like a complete step in an opposition direction. Non striker runouts should be allowed doubled down with a short run penalty will stop this nonsense. What your rule allows almost a legal method to cross without losing a wicket because now the bowler cannot run him out and the batsman is free to take as many strides as he wishes. I agree that pacers are victims of this unfair advantage taken by non strikers, a penalty of 2 runs everytime a non striker is found outside before the release of the ball and also an opportunity to run him out if the bowlers get that would be a great deterrence.Non striker will not be penalised 2 runs if they lose their wicket or ball is not delivered. This will completely shift this responsibility from bowlers to umpires and get rid of that stigma. The rule I am suggesting will not only lose runs for the batting team and also lose his wicket and making it a Lose-Lose situation and non strikers staying inside, bowlers focussing on deliveries and some additional responsibility for 3rd umpires.
@gopaljigupta51582 жыл бұрын
@@kushagramaheshwari2282 I get your point. But maybe we can add a point to not let them cross if its given as a short run. If it's a short run, the original striker has to go back to face the next ball. As long as dismissal possibility is there, stigma will be there. See the issue is to remove stigma we have to remove the dismissal part of it and with my solution unless they complete the run, stepping out earlier will have no advantage.
@kushagramaheshwari22822 жыл бұрын
@@gopaljigupta5158 I understand that this is a convenient way to remove stigma but the thing you are doing this removing the method of dismissal only then there is no room for stigma but that was not the purpose, the mode of dismissal should exist and non strikers should learn to stay inside ( what a difficult thing to do in the first place😂😂😂 ). ICC has 2 options allow non strikers whatever they want to do or completely trample down on this kind of behaviour. Breaching the crease drawn has very bad consequences for the bowler and same standards should be held for the non striker. When a bowler gets a batter out on a no ball nobody says just give the batting team the extra run but the batter should be out, everyone accepts that bowler has to face the consequences for even just just being centimetres outside, why change those standards for nonstrikers.
@gopaljigupta51582 жыл бұрын
@@kushagramaheshwari2282 I have to disagree with you. I think the goal can be easily achieved even after removing the dismissal. Why I am keen on removing the dismissal and thus the stigma is because bowlers feel pressure everytime they mankad someone. Many bowlers just don't bother doing it because of it. ICC can't control people. As long as dismissal is there, people will be upset and bowlers will feel that pressure of not mankading as it's a sensitive issue. So just get rid of it. Now the problem is what to do when non striker leaves before the bowl has been bowled. Well you take away their advantage by not giving them the run and not letting them cross to the striker end. That would make leaving the crease before the delivery pointless. So noone would do it. And if they did, there will be consequences in terms of short run and not getting the strike which is the non striker's only goals. So They'll have to start their run from the crease after the bowl has left bowlers hand.
@kushagramaheshwari22822 жыл бұрын
@@gopaljigupta5158 I would disagree with removal of the option altogether, maybe with time bowlers would stop doing this altogether its for the bowling team to decide, because if you implement the rules you mentioned then why should other runouts be wickets and not one short run. Essentially the same principle is applied you are short of the crease at different times. More bowlers doing it with time will help other bowlers also do it and find it acceptable to do it, we have unnecessarily created a big problem which is completely avoidable if nonstriker stops. The rules created should restrict the non striker not the bowler in my opinion but I guess you want to be more diplomatic, I want to be more brutal bcoz I find this behaviour absolutely shocking.

A lot of great points raised on the Mankad debate. As someone new to Cricket the stigma around the Mankad always surprised me. In baseball it is intrinsic to the game for the runner (non-striker) to try and take an advantage, and for the pitcher (bowler) to attempt to mitigate that advantage and get them out. In baseball we would refer to teams not using Mankad's as falling under the "Unwritten rules", its something that either team could do, but neither team will do. But now we are entering into an era where some teams and players still believe there is an unwritten rule not to Mankad, and others believe it no longer exists. The idea that a player needs to be warned allows to bridge that understanding between teams how they are interpreting this "unwritten rule". Which is why I find that element of the debate so interesting. Was Charlie warned? People are pointing towards the frequency of Charlie creeping out of her box as evidence that it was fair play and coming. However, I see this as possible evidence that she wasn't warned, and thus continued to do it, and also that Deepti should have performed the Mankad far earlier in the innings. The stigma around Mankad outs doesn't go away either when the team performing them does it as a last resort in a close match. If performing a Mankad for a wicket is something you are willing to do, shouldn't you look to do it at the earliest possible time? Like any other dismissal technique?

I'm Indian myself, but even I feel that this is a pretty nuanced issue. Something about winning via a mankad doesn't really sit well with me, but we didn't break any laws. So it's a strange zone. But you guys did a great job of discussing the nuances and presenting the valid arguments from both sides. Thanks guys.

Timed out is a method of dismissal in the sport of cricket. It occurs when an incoming batsman is not ready to play within three minutes of the previous batsman being out. An instance of a 'batter' being declared out without a ball being bowled. What Douglas Jardine did was against the spirit of the game and later the law was amended to make it illegal. What Greg Chappel asked Trevor to do wasn't in the spirit of the game and the law was amended to make it illegal. Vinoo Mankad ran out Bill Brown in 1947 and the rule has not been amended, so .... What Lever did (vaseline) was illegal and against the spirit of the game. What Warner, Bancroft did was against the spirit of the game and illegal.

Just a doubt about the actual law: Does the law state that the player at the non-stricking end have to be inside the crease with his/her body or does the bat count as an extension of the body? If it is the body, most players are taught during their young days to take a start and are told to keep their bats with the arm extended at the crease to take the start. So just trying to clarify that considering very few do the practice mentioned above in international or televised cricket, isn't the extension of the bat at the start before the ball is bowled an advantage and less distance to cover anyway? Just curious.

As a school boy cricketer a few fundamentals are taught about running between the wickets in India. 1. As a non-striker run only after the ball has left the ballers hand. 2. Drag the bat into the crease and don't plonk it 3. while taking the second run, complete the first run by putting the bat into the crease before turning back for the second. If mistakes 2 & 3 commited by a batsman, they are penalised. In case of 2. The batsman is given out. In case of 3, the run is not considered. Then where is the moral dilemma in case of 1? What is the question of spirit of the game, if the batsman is making a basic fundamental mistake while running. And if they don't want to get makaded, go back to the basics and stay in the crease. Not expected from an international cricketer to make such a mistake.

In the meanwhile , RAHANE SENDING JAISWAL OUT OF THE GROUND FOR SLEDING THE BATSMAN IN DILIP TROPHY
@chittaranjanshetty45462 жыл бұрын
Jaiswal was repeatedly sledging to Ravi T using foul language. To which the two players looked like they are getting into a tiff. The umpires got involved and Rahane as captain calmed things down. Jaiswal continued to sledge afterwards to which rahane gave a warning. When he did it again it was then Rahane asked him to walk out of ground. When a player disobeys his captain despite repeated warnings that simply shows disobedience and lack of respect for captain. So he had it coming

I don't agree with rahane, send him to field on boundary line or somewhere else but rahane has to make headlines, if you want to teach discipline your teammate you can do that afterwards in the dressing room

@@AmitYadav-yo5ce Afterwards? He is not his father or anything like that.. He is a captain and a captain owns his team only on the ground.. If Rahane and umpires had intervened earlier, it was the time for Jaiswal stop sledging then and there. Whatever Rahane did is completely justified... Nothing wrong with what Deepti did. However, I believe the laws should also reflect the spirit in which the game should be played in. I like the idea of a run penalty rather than the loss of a wicket for a mankad run out.
@kushagramaheshwari22822 жыл бұрын
The whole point of this is to not treat it as something different and like any other runout, should other runouts also be run penalties instead of wickets ?

@@kushagramaheshwari2282 well I would argue that it shouldn’t be treated like a run-out. That’s where I disagree with the laws.
@kushagramaheshwari22822 жыл бұрын
@@jude305 but by that logic front foot no balls should also just be run penalties and not an extra ball plus no wickets allowed on that ball, in an attempt to protect spirit of the cricket we are just ignoring the fact that nonstriker is the guilty party for being caught taking an advantage his rights to move out should be curtailed not bowlers to run him out. If the principle of run penalties is applied, Bowler should also have access to similar penalties for similar breaches, why special rules for nonstriker protecting his ignorance instead of punishing it. Bowlers are punished harshly for overstepping and same standards should be applied to non strikers.
@jude3052 жыл бұрын
@@kushagramaheshwari2282 it’s not that big a deal if a batter steps out of his crease. It is a big deal if they lose their wicket for doing so - just in the spirit of cricket. That’s my belief anyway. Just make the law a run penalty instead of the loss of a wicket and then nobody will complain, whilst maintaining the spirit of the game.

Next time a top batter gets castled on a no-ball, I am waiting to see the batting captain conceding the wicket because the no-ball was innocuous and conceding the wicket made sense in the spirt of the game! 🙂 Field restrictions, checking every delivery for a no-ball (no one checking batters for early release and deducting runs), analysis-paralysis of Mankads - bowlers are treated like second class citizens. Amazing that no one talked about checking batters for every early release and deducting a ball from the over (opposite of free-hit)! In Baseball, pitchers trying to run out batters for early take off (i.e. without pitching the ball) happens several times in a single game, so this is a grow-up moment of Cricket. I'd love to see bowlers standing up for this and simply back the law!

Ian Higgins has nailed it! The "just stay in your cresse " argument which I have endorsed is just to have a viable counter to comments about it being "disgusting" and "don't invite them back to Lords" which brings out of the inner Jordan Belfort in me. "I'm not fucking leaving ". Its been made a massive ordeal because the dept of cricket moral police seems to be based in England, HQ Lords. And its not the first time, it started with the wickets not being worthy of what HQ perceives to be a good test wicket and so on! Just bring a good fucking spinner and you have a chance of winning, its the same for both teams!
