And regarding the fuse power increase claims, they did state more than once that the power gains from the Magic Fuses were due to the original fuses likely not being in very good condition. I love that decades later, DK and Max are still just as enthusiastic about cars, tuning and driving as when they were younger.

Yeah, a more efficient alternator with an underdriven pulley could reduce a bit of parasitic drag. Either that or swap a few other bits and change the crank pulley to get it all at once

Renault has some "piloted" alternator, it works on demand. If I remember correctly, Toyota and Honda has this type too.

I had the pulley belt fail and had to drive home without the alternator. You could probably complete a one-lap time attack without the alternator at all! I wouldn't have believed this myself, but the car worked fine. The battery was brand new, though.

I didnt expect fuses to make that much of difference but it makes sense that resistance grows as contacts get oxidized over time and that effects function of electronics. Kinda reminds me how my father used to upgrade battery cables (ground and to alternator) and make ignition leads by hand from components because "they were better than store bought".

I think people react so much on this because of a combination of factors. Dyno runs for instance, these days most of us watch Garage 4age, nick's garage, motortrend, sloppy mechanics or MCM's dyno sessions (or all 5). So we know at least a little bit about oil quality, fuel quality, intake temperatures, fuel temperature (yes, it's a thing), water temperatures, oil temperatures, air humidity, engine load, consistency and the like (and some of us know the lot). I don't know what happened behind the scenes, but let's be honest, this video was pretty subpar when it goes for the inconsistent dyno-testing. Then there's the negative naysayers, with them I bet the alarms went off weeks ago thanks to the GT86 and AE86 videos that went on and on about these fuses. And then there's omitting fuse testing. I hope Carprime realizes by now that they skipped on a simple multimeter test of the new "miracle" fuses vs new OEM fuses. I hope Carprime does a resistance test between OEM and Miracle fuses, starting with unpacking every item out from their respective factory seals and measure them for resistance. All it takes is a multimeter, the items in question, and 2 minutes of your time, in one uncut unedited segment with everything on a table shown clearly without interruption (seriously, uncut, unedited, uninterrupted, no taking the camera away or you will stand immediately accused of hiding swaps by people in the comments). That should rectify any damage and shut everyone up 😁 My personal opinion? I'm 100% sure everything is on the level, when DK said he felt the difference, I believe him 😁 I've taken a lot of these AE86 harnesses apart over the years, and have found them corroded several feet in from their respective connectors, what does this do to engine sensor > ECU voltage, not to mention alternator load, pray tell? Been fiddling with nickel-type wires and custom harness here and there on AE86's myself, results has me wanting canbus for everything under the dash. I can easily see these fuses, if made with a nickel alloy of some sort (or something and/or the other), easily reducing alternator load, in some cases more than others, and have engine performing better than even brand new OEM fuses, it's especially noticeable on pickup and response, exactly as shown here. Finally. To the people who say you cant feel a few % decrease in power, sure, when you've got enough to spare you don't notice as much, at 10% loss you probably just crank the wastegate a little bit or blip a computer or w/e. But you haven't owned an AA63/AE86 GT/AE82 GT FX16/AE101-111 Caldina-Levin-Trueno (or combination of either, 20v in AE86, 16/20v in KE70, TA40/60 etc), at least not the way they "should be owned" (yes that's a thing) > Everything can be improved :D You haven't truly known powerloss the way we do. Changing final drive to 4.7, tearing out A/C and replacing P/S with manual steering rack in the name of reducing engine load? Easy! 🤣 To us, every 0.01hp matters, 0.01% power loss? I WANT THE INTRUDER BROUGHT BEFORE ME IN SHACKLES 😂 A couple of fuses? Hold my beer 🤣🤣🤣 Fuses are such a little thing, it sounds impossible, until you feel the car is down on power, you've tried bore-scope, injector cleaning/testing, swapping harnesses (that are now 38>34 years old, they all definitely have corrosion damage at least to an extent), sensors, full engine rebuild, and everything else and in between, so you try fuses, and boom, it works.

Agreed with all your points, I would highly suggest people at least try to replace their old fuses with new OEM fuses and see if they can see an increase in power before dishing out $500 for these miracle fuses. I really hope a channel out there (Garage 4AGE) tests these fuses out, I will gladly eat my words if after extensive testing these fuses show consistently that they add power, hell I'll buy and throw them in my AW11 for that sweet 10% power increase.

Looks like just a difference in oil temps. With hotter oil will gain power as engine revs, just like it does here. But if someone sends me some of those fancy fuses, i'll test them

@@Garage4age Absolutely! Oil temp alone easily accounts for the shown difference in power, and that's before we talk about intake temps, fuel temps, fuel quality... the lot of it. As I already mentioned before (in case anyone gets the wrong idea) the dyno segment is subpar compared to what we've become accustomed with on your channel and channels like yours, it's as simple as that. Whether or not those "magic" fuses actually contribute to measured power-gains = I defer to you in a heartbeat. Been around with the blasted Corolla wiring enough that improved feel (rather than measured results) in response/pickup makes me pretty curious about the fuses. Not curious enough to splurge on them at current asking prices though 🤣 They cost about as much as fresh pistons, and the engine in my guinea pig is coming in at 38 years old since it's components were last laid bare for the naked eye, compression is less than minimum OEM spec, so an overhaul (which is what I'm aiming for) will serve me far better. Fuses will have to wait 👍 I "defend" (not that they warrant any sort of defense from me, but you get what I'm saying 😂) the fuses in so far that I've swapped out more than one corroded wire and felt better pickup/response, it just doesn't take much when you deal with wiring this old and drive the car every day for 10 years. When DK says he feels a difference while driving, I have no reason to doubt that😁

@@ym40ubeto66 DK replaced his 5th gear with a gear shorter than 4th but longer than 3rd so "3.5" Developed specifically for a better gear ratio at Gunsai Touge. So going through the gears he goes 1-2-3-3.5-4 which means shifting from 3rd to where 5th would be and then "downshifting" to 4th when in reality he's still upshifting. Very odd but very smart

I've had my 86 changed the same SHORAI battery and magical fuse around 4 or 5 years ago, much earlier than Mr. Orido san started his shop. I was surprised and wondered why there's only a few people know that by changing these two items can make such changes at that time because I really felt the difference even if I didn't have a chance to make a dyno test on my car. And now they came out with these dyno videos, showing people that it is acutally giving your car a little bit more hp (quite a big improvement for NA cars) and better responses after the small upgrades, anyway I gotta say it's definitly worth it and I'm happy to see not only Mr. Orido san approves that, and even Mr. Tsuchiya san does too. Great videos :)

Also why its beneficial to move a battery inboard for a track vehicle, less resistance to rotating, less mass hanging outside of where it's easier to control.

For those curious of how this made such significant power, its simple. A fresh battery requires less from the alternator, and a fresh fuse decreases resistance and voltage drop, which in turn causes the alternator to have less parasitic drain on the engine, allowing it to put more of its power to the wheels. In reality, Tsuchiya san's 7-ag is easily a 240 crank horsepower engine.

I'm not buying that. Let's assume that the car is equipped with 80 A alternator (it's just my guess, but in a ballpark of what I would expect in a car from that era). Under full load, it can produce around 1 kW of electricity. With some loses that's about 1,5 HP. But they didn't change the load at all. State of charge for both batteries is debatable, but both were used for starting before test run. Also the Ohm's law tells you, that if the circuit has higher resistence, the current will drop, together with the power drawn. So if the fuse caused the voltage drop, it actually made the alternator work less (unless the car is equipped with modern brushless fuel pump, but I don't think so).

My point is to offer a simple explanation as to why we dont need to treat a very nice video from Tsuchiya and Orido like a federal case in which we scrutinize the technical possibilities of 8 horsepower. the reality of this video is not making horsepower, its restoring horsepower through reduction of parasitic losses, both kinetic and electrical in nature.

Some things in the car are directly voltage related like the fuel pump. More voltage means more fuel. I did a complete rewire of my fuel pump with high grade 10gauge cable (stock is something like 18-20 gauge) and a new relay and measured a significant voltage increase which meant that I was getting more fuel pressure to the engine (which better atomizes the fuel coming out of the injector). This is a very simple, low buck modification, and I would recommend it to anyone. OEMs unfortunately do not wire everything properly. You can do the same thing to the car headlights and they will be significantly brighter as well.

I have a lot respect for these 2 men but i also have a lot of questions after watching this video… 1. I can see how and why a lighter battery upfront makes a difference in handling. This I agree. 2. What if they replaced the old fuses with new normal ones? Maybe the old ones are just deteriorated hence the power difference? 3. Every time when we remove the battery, it resets the ECU. The feeling of the car being more responsive could be because of that

I’d agree with you on a newer car… these older cars are so “stupid”… the ECUs are VERY basic, even with a standalone ecu replacement I can’t see any reason unplugging the battery would have any affect… they don’t really have an emissions system, or OBD that needs time to relearn…

factory fuses are already high quality, usually made by MTA, Bussmann, Littelfuse etc. they dont use dollar store multipacks. i suspect if it is oxidation then removing and reinserting the fuse a few times will scrape some oxidation off. they really should have done a multimeter test.

@sr20drft well extra voltage to things like, ECU, coil packs, fuel pumps won't increase power because feeding them more electrical energy does not make them put out more power (as long as there isn't an underlying issue already). Your injectors will not spray more or better fuel if you give them more voltage. There is a compensation in the ECU to keep fuel amt sprayed vs voltage equal. This will usually be called something along the lines of Injector dead time table. So Increasing voltage will not change the amount of fuel sprayed. Additional voltage to fuel pump may make it run harder but if it was already providing enough fuel then there will be no change because the fuel pressure regulator will still regulate the pressure the rail and injectors see down to the same pressure. Thus same differential pressure across injectors and thus same fueling. (Not that extra fuel automatically makes more power. Small changes usually make no difference. Going too rich or lean will then.hurt power. But there's a pretty broad band of air/fuel mixture where an engine will operate close or at peak) More voltage to the ECU will just get regulated to it's working voltage. So nothing changes there..more voltage also wouldn't make it work faster or anything like that. Extra voltage to the coils won't help unless there is insufficient voltage to begin with. In most cases as long as spark is sufficient a larger spark won't make more power. There is a possible theory that if the resistance in these installed parts is less that there is then less strain and parasitic drag caused by the alternator which would free up some horsepower. However this is also very...out there if it would work. This testing is just nowhere near scientific enough to actually prove anything. Too many variables not kept the same. Hope this helps a bit. If anything further needs clearing up am happy to try 😊

Its less than 10% which made it neglegible but I saw orido video and it does made a little bit of power. Also when running on dyno the more runs you got the hotter then engine will get and less power it'll read and since on his video he installs the battery and fuse last yea it did make a tiny more hp.

Also, the lightweight lithium batteries have a slightly higher voltage, which *could* improve performance, as the ECU would be subject to less voltage variation from the alternator. By far the biggest and most noticable performance improvement is the 6kg reduction in mass.

People are forgetting how to drive a fun car these days. Nothing wrong with a 130 HP stock output. It's a car for learning the basic fundamentals of driving as well. Simplify, then add lightness, the AE86 is the embodiment of that.

In America, you almost never see the rear drive AE86. It's a very rare car, unfortunately. Finding a stock one is basically impossible.

I noticed when Tsuchiya-San was shifting, he still has the "3.5" gear setup, where he shifts from third to fifth position, then down to fourth for a close ratio! Edit: is there a recommended model of the Shorai powersports battery for car usage?

@@rhubarbpie2027 If you have worries, get the LFX36A3-BS12 it has 36Ah or reserve and 540CCA. Orido san is rocking a 315CCA battery for a 1600cc motor and said in the other video the startup power is amazing.

Well. The battery improvement might be not as expected as the battery was propably sitting for a while on a shelf and even if its new it might be a little bit "hungry" for power. So right after it was installed in a car the alternator was propably working even harder that with the old battery. The old battery was charged by the alternator just before the dyno run and the car was also driven to the shop, so it was definetelly charged up to the max. Well I was thinking about moving the battery in my car to the trunk as A4 B5 layout is making a car very heavy at the front, but I realised that with my skills - i will not see any improvement anyway. :D

Absolutely agree with this. Most lithium batteries are stored at about 40-50% power. They should have checked the voltage before installing it. In this case, they might have actually bungled the entire back-to-back battery test. As for battery relocation, you can definitely improve the balance of the vehicle. Unfortunately, the necessary cable adds a lot of weight. I moved my battery to the trunk, and it did improve the balance, but I also really enjoyed the fact that the battery was no longer running at engine bay temperatures, which helps improve battery life. Also, it's easier to install inverters, and run wires to aftermarket audio systems. There's a lot of ancillary benefits to relocating the battery. Just make sure you route the cable properly so that it doesn't rub against the frame and cause an electrical fault. Also, make sure you put a 150amp fuse right next to the battery in back. You would much rather blow that fuse than see the shower of sparks a chafed battery cable can make! Trust me on this one!

Good result for this type of upgrade. Power losses in second run are higher by 4 hp + you always have the tolerances of the dynos. Nevertheless a good result and the weight reduction at this height at the front will be observable during racing sessions :) But very costy..

Yes and no that battery will really be felt it’s position in front of the front wheels makes it a cantilever doubling the effective weight working against him with moment of inertia Same as if ur spinning and bring your arms in you spin faster let your arms out and you’ll slow down even tho your hands are verry small compared to the rest of your body they have great effect on the moment of inertia and in a car that’s handling

May be 4 o 5 bhp are lost because with ITBs, the direct intake trumpets don't receive as much air in the dyno as in the open road or track? I don't know really, but maybe it is not the same in a car with a more normal intake sucking air from the front grille on the dyno with the typicall air fan
