I Stand With Forspoken

It is with a degree of shame and a very heavy heart that I am compelled to defend Forspoken. I fully appreciate that this game is problematic. In fact, everything between "buying it" and "furiously deleting it from your Steam library" is probably going to be problematic on some level. However, despite being a dreadful game, where you play an unlikeable idiot, with dialogue so terrible that the phrase "word salad" is being generous, I still think some good came from this game. If TripleA publishers ARE going to insist on making awful, politically correct drivel, then Forspoken represents an ideal blueprint of how it should be done.

It's an interesting game, that gets some idea very close to working and even does some thing very well. The respawn loading is blindingly fast for example the way it handles some LOD issues isn't completely terrible compared to some other games, and I actually kinda like some of the traversal. I'll leave it up to personal taste on if people think the combat is a little bit broken or not. I will say this the main character's dialogue is so annoying as is her constant (and lacking in variety) swearing that along with 1 or two other games is getting people to push again for the return of the silent protagonist. (One of the reasons I often joke about Ubisoft should make a Far Cry : Gi Joe game where you play as the Mute Ninja/Commando Snake Eyes), That said though I think Forspoken screws up in a lot of places with things like mission structure, a lack of things to do in the world, a unappealing hub world and a repetitive over world. Maybe they could learn something from "casual Games" where they often give you pieces to make a castle of something like that = so that you are working towards a goal or series of goals.. that might have helped if better realised in the plot. Other games seems to be doing something like that at least. So I guess in short. 1. Don't bore people with your plot 2. Give people a choice of what to do, even some busy work is a change of pace at least. 3. If you Main Character doesn't shut up make sure you can mute them or adjust their frequency of speech, or make them only speak in subtitles (all of that is some help at least). 4. If using a game engine that already exists try to not make your game look worse than the previous one. Such a lot of money the spent and it didn't take very long for people to decide it wasn't worth their time, so that is a lot of time and money wasted then. Maybe more to do and a less chatty main character might have tipped the balance, maybe it might not. But it's a shame to see someone waste so much time and money on something that you can at least see that a good "fixer" could have saved it.

A few months ago they wanted FF NFT's to be a thing and the lead on 14 went "not happening to us", so they pulled out. I guess its cos 14 brings in such a massive stream of profit that they cant fuck with it without threatening the bottom line. Long as 14 sails, everything else they touch can sink without fear.

Great points about it not taking anything from the normal side of gaming. I hadn't really considered that and I'm inclined to agree .....BUT ....we know how corporations work. They don't lean like a normal functioning person. They learn like a selfish thieving kid, IE: "going in to rob that house through the front door didn't work, so next time I'll just go back to getting in through the side window". What do I mean by this? The only strategy I can see is that the Blackrock investors have so much capital to throw at this agenda that they are willing to do it at a loss. The money that is invested is likely enough to cover the companies losses, which incentivises and enables them to continue promoting the agenda, despite their products being unsuccessful. In essence, the Blackrock investors are spending the money with their minimum desired return on investment being to further their agenda.

You may be truly onto something with your statement about SquareEnix exerting woke goodwill through this game, as they're now in the cross-hairs of Shill Gaming Media for the lack of excessive diversity in Final Fantasy XVI, a "problem" that SquareEnix has outright refused to apologize for. And good on them to use a nothing game like this to channel all artistic compromises through, and leaving the Final Fantasy XVI team (who appear to have made a damn solid product) to do as they originally intended. What blows my mind is that one of the game's writers is the person who wrote all of the Legacy of Kain series, as well as co-writing the first 3 Uncharted games (Amy Hennig - ie, Naughty Dog's more talented writer that Niel Druckman was so hyper-aggressive to that he forced her to resign, simply because he wanted her job), and another one of the writers was arguably the strongest writer for early seasons of Telltale's Walking Dead series. Like, the Writers are actually talented, making you wonder what the fuck happened! I kinda get the feeling that 'Taking the piss' is indeed what they attempted, but I think it was presented/streamlined too literally, making it just a giant eyeroll of bullshit.

It's become a bit of a cliche to point it out, but such writers have no real-world experience so they can only write about what they know: stories. So time and again you'll have characters comment or quip about what would happen 'were this a comic book' or how they, or another character, is acting like a well-known archetype. It's all so tiresome. These writers write about what they've read about, not what they've experienced. Their meta is the story meta, not a set of principles or lessons they've extracted from real life. Hence they can't teach anything because they've learned nothing. They have no authentic voice because failing to live, they've never been authentic: their lives are all simulated. It's like they're (Good) Will Hunting but never got the help they needed and remained shit-scared kids well into their adult years. Which is revealed the moment you criticize them. They respond as children.

Eh, I hear that alot, but HP Lovecraft spent his life sick and mostly confined to home, and wrote some great shit. Life experience is necessary if you're going to write a story about something real, like what it was like in a recent war (or a fuckton of real research) but I don't think you need much to write a fantasy or sci-fi story.
