Thanks for the video. Over the years. I have used the following for street, photojournalism, and documentaries: 20mm f/3.5 Nikkor for Nikon SLRs 21mm f/2.8 Zeiss Biogon for Contax G1 rangefinders 21mm f/1.4 Leitz Summicron for Leica rangefinders For me, these lenses were great members of 21/35/90mm and 20/35/85mm kits.

Yeah, nice compact primes like these are the best. These days I'm using the 26mm and 40mm Nikon lenses. They are so compact on my gigantic camera haha. :)

Nice! I can't wait to go to Akihabara again. 21mm is a nice, wide look. One of my go-to lenses along with a 40 and an 80-200.

Quality post, commentary and pics, Lucas. Balanced use-case based coverage of the lens. Perhaps its just me, but there seems to be something different in the quality of this vid (seems sharper and crisper than prior vid). Fully manual lenses can be more work, but that’s all we had w/old analog cameras. Wall pipes and “Dutch tilt” photos my fav. Does LR have a profile for this lens? This 21 mm is a nice “book-end” to the bazooka tele last time. What’s the widest lens you’ve used in a post (ever do fisheye)? With all the mixed lighting at the venue, what white balance setting do you use? Clever thumbnail w/“viewer private joke” shop in background. Good “save” by calling the store interesting “VISUALLY”😁. BTW, impressive IQ for that 1/5 sec handheld image.
@EYExplore
@EYExplore 2 жыл бұрын
It could just be the light or how I edited the colors. But we shot it the same way. LR does not have a profile. So that's one drawback for sure. I've shot with fisheye years ago, but never on the channel. We will definitely rent one to continue the trend of videos with odd lenses. For photos and video we just use Auto WB. I edit the raw photos so I customize the white balance in post. For the video, I do a basic color grade to adjust the WB but it's not raw, so the changes are limited. Glad you like the thumbnail! :)

Great content! Is this a focal length you’ll use often compared to a 24mm ? Not sure of the price point, but looks like a nice third party lens How is this lens at f1.5? Thank you for providing a different option then $$$ only lenses.
@EYExplore
@EYExplore 2 жыл бұрын
I think the lens is about 200 bucks, so pretty cheap. I like using it overall, but I have to admit I gravitate towards my 14-24. It's bigger and heavier (and much more expensive) but in the end it's more versatile and I'm lazy so AF makes me happy haha. But the 21mm is definitely fun to use and perfect for traveling light, as I say in the video.

I always wonder about what qualifies as "in focus" on zone depth scales. My Fuji X70 is an 18mm and it seems to reckon (by the on-screen scale) that f6.4 is necessary to get me everything between 3m - 5m. I imagine old Fujifilm are just playing it safe, since people like to check photos at 100% punch in, but I'm also wondering if they're giving me the full frame scale at 28mm and not the 18mm aps-c scale or something. Idk it's weird. Especially since the distance markings aren't calibrated well at all - I think they're off by about 1m even, meaning you overshoot infinity when auto focusing without a deep zone. I guess what I'm saying is: When is the flip screen GR coming? 😂

Also, if you get a chance it would be interesting to see what you can work with over at Diver City. Or, even the Tamachi station area, since some infrastructure looks dauntingly huge and awesome over there. It would be cool to see the 40 and 21 put to work over there.
@EYExplore
@EYExplore 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, there is a lot of voodoo magic when it comes to distance scales and 'acceptable' sharpness. I think it's good to play it safe and go one stop past the actual stop on the scale. So if you're using f/5.6, you actually use the marking for f/8. I didn't do this enough while shooting this video and got a few photos with the background a bit out of focus, but that's also okay, as it looks nice in its own way. :)

I just checked quickly and in Japan a second-hand D4 is about 1200 bucks. Depending on one's needs I think that's a great deal. But of course, it might be better to just get a more modern D750 or Z5 for less.
