21st Century Hermit

Sister Rachel Denton has vowed to spend the rest of her life living as a consecrated hermit in the Catholic faith.
A hermit is a person who chooses to live alone, with the intention of finding God. Rarely leaving her house she lives a life of prayer and solitude.
However, she uses the internet and social media to share her experience and distance her self from physically interacting with society.

One of the most beautiful gardens I have ever seen. I spent time in a monastery recently thinking about becoming a religious, just myself and one other dedicated lady/nun. As it turns out God had other plans and I am back in the world. It is hard to be in the world but I made God a promise and he is helping me to keep it. I wish this dear woman well and peace.

She was a teacher and deputy head before she became a hermit - hence she was able to buy the small house. She supported herself through calligraphy of holy scriptures but I believe has had cancer. No the church doesn't provide the living costs of consecrated hermits. Before the local bishop accepts hermits under their spiritual direction the would be hermit needs to show how they will cover their expenses.

The Catholic Church does not pay hermits, Consecrated Virgins or apostolic simple vowed religious sisters, brothers or priests in congregations. The Church only financially supports diocesan priests, bishops and cardinals caring for all their temporal affairs. I support myself through my pensions and social security that I receive so, my life is a very simple life that in the USA is considered below the poverty level. However, I knew what I was walking into when I responded to God's Call and yes, I do make and sell homemade breads and cookies to supplement my income. I hope this answers your question about financial support within the institutional Church. God bless

The point of being a christian is to be amongst non believers and be a christ like example. how can God use you to reach the lost if you're hidden away somewhere in exclusion? Matthew 5:15: Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.

Not everyone can be a preacher because some of us just aren't made for that. A preacher has to be somewhat witty. People will try to ridicule his words. Notice that this woman is hidden yet her life is glowing before us all. Im saving up for becoming a hermit. I will not have internet though. It could become a porno temptation.

A similar argument could be made against the Carthusian order. They believe that their mission is prayer for the whole world, as well as finding god for themselves. It is not a selfish life.

Sometimes you have to be alone to be happy. When alone you may realize what is truly not worth dong and what is worth doing. Only in my little box of a house and at home with dog and cat , with a good book and on my two acres do I finally feel I am really living and living right.

Interesting that so many associate religious teachings with becoming a hermit. Perhaps it is necessary to remove oneself from worldly influences in order to live a life of piety. However, my experience has revealed precisely the opposite. Once removed from ALL of mankind's influences and ego, one realizes that we are nothing more than evolved animals, with a few more creature comforts. Many spend their lives blindly searching for an invisible god, who never answers their prayers. Or, spiritual enlightenment, which is only generated within one's own imagination, often induced by hallucinogenic drugs. Everything becomes perceived as significant signals from the universe, provided that it supports one's faith. Been there, done that. Folks who live and die according to their God's teachings are also willing to kill to defend Him/Her/It. That makes them the most dangerous people in the world, who wage wars and mass genocide. This is the mindless 'humanity' I reject. Having passed beyond these misguided teachings, now I am free from second guessing any sort of divine destiny, judgements, nor guilt. My only guide is my own moral compass, with no strings attached. I am humbly grateful for every passing day of life, while being fully aware that it will inevitably end, as all good things do. My prime objective is to have nurtured the balance of nature for the benefit of all lifeforms. My world is no divine gift for my selfish consumption. Life on earth is unique and has evolved over millions of years prior to my natural birth and relatively miniscule lifespan. What could be a more important responsibility than supporting that continuum of natural life? Prayers for the rapture will never reverse global warming, which has been caused by mankind's mindless technological 'progress'. Only the polluters are capable of cleaning up their own mess by applying newer sustainable 'clean' technologies, before it is too late. How in God's name can anyone believe in achieving a mythical heavenly afterlife, after polluting the 'Garden of Eden' into a hellish pit of toxic nastiness? Sorry for the rant against religions. I intend no disrespect to anyone's personal faith. But, this BS really pisses me off!

You are a poor soul that fails to realize that you are both the cog on the machine/engine of humanity, as well as the whole machine it self. You both, reside in this “universe” as well as have the universe inside of you, and thus you are the universe. Don’t lower yourself and think of yourself as merely a pawn on the chess board, but instead realize that you can be the pawn if you want to, you can even be the king on the chess board if you really want to. But know that you are also the person playing this game of chess. The god like figure. So don’t degrade or devalue your true potential and power, and instead seek the true enlightenment that you fail to realize exist in dimensions not understood from our flesh state. Just because you cannot see something does not mean that it does not exist, much like when the sun is covered by clouds it does not mean the sun is not still there :)
