Most of my hunting buddies tell me I should graduate to a larger caliber. They all use larger calibers like 30.06 and 7mm Mag, and call mine a pea-shooter. I sport a Weatherby .243 with Bausch & Lomb scope. It's the darnedest thing that they are always having to track their deer. Shoot mine right between the eyes every time and drop them right there on the spot.
@cwinfield11862 жыл бұрын
I’ve killed many deer with both. They both work fine. I prefer a neck shot with the 22-250 but the .243 for some reason goes straight through without a tendency to actually break the neck almost as if you’re shooting FMJ’s or something. Cartridge I use now is actually 22-243. Sweetest gun I have.

I actually use the 55 grain Hornady V-max in my 22-250, and it is my understanding that this (being a varmint round) is designed to splinter or shatter on impact, rather than just mushroom and pass right through the animal. I'm certainly no expert, but it is my understanding that they are specifically designed this way to create massive damage inside the game, without damaging the pelt with a huge exit wound. That leaves you with just a "pin hole" entry wound if you are hunting an animal for its pelt... such as a coyote. This is the first time I've ever seen such a clear demonstration of how effective that design actually is-the block of clay illustrates it perfectly. Thank you.

Great video Brother! Both calibers have a variety of bullet options and the heavier ones are more suitable for hunting deer size game. I have harvested probably 25 deer with my .243 with 100 grain Soft Point Bullets, and none have ever required a second shot. In most cases, at a broadside shot at 200 yards or less, there is an exit wound and good blood trail, if the deer doesn't drop in it's tracks. However, I have had some quartering away shots that did not provide an exit wound, but the deer usually collapses on impact or within a few seconds after departure. The .243 has lighter, faster devastating Hollowpoints and V-Max bullets that will almost leave Ground Hog size game, in two separate halves. The low recoil of the .243 makes it an excellent choice for young or old beginners! Keep up the good work! I live in the West Side Community and will have to join you and Paul on the Range one of these days! A Friend of mine and I held a Full Automatic Machine Gun Shoot at the OK Corral Range a few years back. I sure would like to have a 243 so I would have a small rifle, I'd put a bumper sticker on the stock that says my other rifle is a 7.62 x 54. It is true that I have a .22, but a 243 would be cool.

in the 22/250, the 55g Hornady Sp will give a dramatically different result, compared to the 55g V max. 22/250, 60g hornady sp penetrates. The 60g Nosler partition creates a wound like a 30/06 loaded with 150g Hornady sp! You have to see it to believe it! My deer processor thought that I had shot the deer with a 300 Win Mag with 150g!

The smallest rifle I've personally shot a deer with was my 25-06 but I've quite a few friends who've successfully used the. 223/5.56. The 22-250 got a lot more boiler room than a .223. It should do pretty well IMHO.

It does have more boiler room. But at the standard 14 twist not as good with heavier bullets for larger game.

The absolute fasted DRT dead right there deer I ever shot was with a 22-250 with 60gr Nosler I loaded. It was a 110 pound button buck and it dropped so fast and didn’t kick I was simply amazed. I aimed for base of his neck and got pass through. Same hunt my buddy neck shot another buck weighing 180 pounds with a factory 7mm Mag but it ran off and died 200 yards away. When we skinned his buck the neck was basically jello. I have no idea how that buck moved after getting hit. Thus there will never ever be a final answer as to what works or doesn’t on deer. Love your videos man. I watch them all.

The 243 Winchester cartridge is my choice for groundhog and deer hunting. 87 too 95 grain bullets. 100 and 105 grain can have expansion problems when fired close. Had that problem in a 1982 New Mexico hunt on a Mule deer, it ran over 500 yards and after an hour of looking I found it by back trailing it’s lost foot prints 50 foot and then it had jumped over a bush off to the side. The bullet Remington 100 grain PCL. This gave me plenty of reason for study in bullets and having one shot kills while no tracking need on my deer kills afterwards. As for

Another great video. Both are great cartridges. It would be nice to to see the comparison using the same manufacturer and same product line since bullet selection can have a huge impact on the results.

22-250 energy dump was cool. The 243 has to be one of the coolest clay shots I have seen. Looks to be smiling and sticking it’s tongue out at the 22-250 lol. 22-250 is my all time favorite small game rifle. I will not deer hunt with it though. It’s to hard to find a bullet that will stay together at those velocities for my liking.

My grandad always deer hunted with the 22-250. Every time i went with him and he shot one, it always dropped them dead in there tracks. But he always went for the neck shot. Ive only seen him miss once. That was when a doe was about 10 yards from the stand and constantly snorting at us. He missed the first shot. It ran off and came back around behind us 20 minutes later about the same distance and non stop snorted again. The stand was built on old telephone poles so we were way up, but he took another shot and missed again. This time the doe never even ran so he finally just got mad at that old doe and threw a beer at her before she ran off. But i was always impressed with that 22-250. He used it for coyotes, turkey, everything. Never had a problem with it.

Use my .243 with IMR 4350 & 75 gr VMax's on woodchucks. I let them live another day if less than 100 yrds. Anything else becomes "ground chuck" if I do my part. Handloading really brings out the "fantastic" of this cartridge.

I never hunted with a .22-250, but I've shot everything from hogs, whitetail, and black bear with .243. It's just a great round on any small to medium sized game. The way I figure, if it goes bang it's got my attention.

40 years ago I tried it with a 25 Liters water filled metal can and a 22-250 (BSA Heavy Barrel rifle) on several hand loaded ammo. More shots confirmed bullet not to exit but disintegrated inside the rest of the can (exploded). Naturally best result with a 53 grs HPBT Hornady bullet and a semi-critical load of Nobel ICI n. 0

Looked like the .22-250 was in 3 pieces when you first aimed the camera in there. I don't but, I know of quite a few people that use .243 for deer up here in Wisconsin and they've had good luck with it.

243 is Wicked! Hydrostatic Shock Will take down Any Deer or Elk! I Hunted Many years with a 243 and not 1 deer got away!
@davidcuriel45193 жыл бұрын
Just out of curiosity and I am not criticizing your comment...... How many elk have you shot and killed with the .243? And how many elk never got away that you did shoot? I have a .243 but I would be hesitant to use that caliber for elk or even deer in that part of the country where elk primarily live....the west and the far north. The animals are just so much bigger and stronger out there. Even with proper shot placement, a well made 100 grain 6mm caliber bullet like a nosler partition bullet is not going to be as effective as say a good 140 to 160 grain bullet in 7mm, like the 7mm-08 or the 7mm Remington magnum. I have used my 7mm Remington magnum on elk, mule deer, texas whitetail, texas exotics, and big feral hogs. No animals have ever gotten away. Unfortunately I have lost some texas whitetail deer and some feral hogs when I used my .243 that I shot at ranges beyond 200 yards. The .243 is a great varmint round at long ranges. It is also a great deer round at medium ranges in my opinion. But I personally would never shoot an elk with a .243, but that is just me. The shot placement would have to be near perfect every time in order for the animal to not get away and/or suffer before expiring.

It’s probably already been said but it would be cool to use same type of bullets with the calibers. I’d imagine a soft point in the 22-250 would have passed through same as the soft point 243. The vmax exploded on impact as it’s meant to do.
