The original 250 Savage is a complete replacement for the 243. They shoot the same weight projectiles at exactly the same speeds. It's a real shame that no one is building guns in 250-3000 any more. My father rebarrelled a Remington 600 to 250 Savage. The rifle went from holding THREE+ONE 243 cartridges to holding FOUR+ONE 250 Savage cartridges in the same magazine.

Im 65. My Grandma hunted the first half of her life with a 30-30. In 1956 (i think) or there abouts Grandpa got her a shiny new Savage M99 in 243. for the next 37 years she took her mulies and elk every year with it. @@Duke_of_Prunes250 savage is a good one that is sadly largely forgotten, I have two model 1899s one chambered in 250 savage and one chambered in 303 savage, never hunted with the 303 (I’d imagine it’s very similar to 30-30 considering you can chamber a 30-30 in it and it’ll shoot the same though I wouldn’t recommend it for safety reasons I can confirm that it works) and I will die on the hill that 250 savage is one of the best hunting calibers ever made, despite being a fairly small round it almost always drops them within 20 yards.

I love my 243. Crazy velocity with light frangibles for varmints. A 55 grain pill in 243 should be up near 4000ft/s. The 22-250 is a great cartridge however factory twist rates are limiting so I built a 7 twist 22-250 to sling 90 grain vld projectiles making the cartridge a great long range target toy. I use the 243 now for everything deer and smaller now. And the 22-250 for target. I'm able to spot for myself too since muzzle jump isn't excessive as well. If you like target shooting look into a 22-250 target build. It's become my favourite target rifle for 1000 meters and less.

At the velocity the 22-250 bullet travels it becomes just a splatter when it hits the fluid. i have both 22-250 and 243 in ruger M77 that i bought in about 1995 and i didn't hunt with them it was for reloading for target shooting. they were both light barrels and the 250 would shoot under a quarters dia easy at 100 yds the 243 i never got it that good it was more like a 2 inch group at 100. the scope mount on those is i think a dove tail type and i was able to move my scope from one rifle to the other and it would hit within 3 or 4 inches at 100 yds first shot.
