I worked with a WW 2 Army Veteran in 1980. He was in the Italian campaign and he told me if a German was behind a big tree he would just shoot the tree a few times and the German would go down. He never talked much about his actions, but when he died they listed his awards. He had many including a Silver Star.

Agree, I am 57 and have had 270 mod. 70 about the same amount of time:) Was raised hunting mule deer and elk in western Colo. where a "close" shot was200 yds if you were good or lucky:) I received it as a pre-teen from a neighbor for shoveling snow:) luckily he had compassion ( hard headed ex marine) about hitting targets(kill shots) at 300 to400 yds ,made me and his son do that before he would hunt with us :) and he shot his 30.06 all the time at 500 yds. that was not popular then,unlike now where everyone is a sniper:( from movies and video games:( can still hit pie plate targets at 250 yds with the mod 70 :) just for tmi my other deer rifle was a restored 303 british ( 100$) my teenage friend I traded it too still hunts with it:). Be safe and pass it on thx. Rick

Nope. Welcome to physics. A difference of around 150fps will remain constant regardless of projectile weight. There's a reason the NATO standard is 7.62x51. Here's another hot tip. The 30-06 ammo used by the US military was downloaded when compared to civilian 30-06. This was done due to military range constraints. The downloaded 30-06, was nearly identical to .308 loadings....Weird..
@GeorgiaBoy1961
@GeorgiaBoy1961 3 жыл бұрын
@@225degrees- Re: "The 30-06 ammo used by the US military was downloaded when compared to civilian 30-06. This was done due to military range constraints." The original 30-06 loading used in the Great War, World War One, was a 150-grain spitzer (pointed) flat-base bullet (G1 ballistic coefficient of .405) fired at ~ 2700 fps. Its claimed maximum range was 4700 yards, but that estimate was later shown after the war to be incorrect, and during the war U.S. troops firing the cartridge from medium machine guns had also noticed a discrepancy. When tested to full distance, the M1906 cartridge actually had a max. range of 3300-3400 yards. During that era, long-range harassing and interdicting machine-gun fire was considered important, so work began on a new projectile for the 30-06. In 1926, M1 Ball/FMJ was introduced, using a 174-grain jacketed boat-tail bullet with a BC of .494 and a MV of ~ 2647 fps whose maximum range was approximately 5,500 yards. At that time, standard practice was to use up old ammo stocks first for training & drill purposes, and since wartime surplus amounted to some two billion rounds (!) of M1 30-06 ammunition, there was a lot of it to be used. By 1936, it was discovered that the maximum range of M1 Ball was beyond the safe limits of many firing ranges, in particular National Guard ranges in many eastern states. A rush order went out for production of a cartridge essentially duplicating the old M1906 cartridge, and in due course, M2 Ball arrived in 1938. It utilized a 152-grain FMJ-FB projectile backed by IMR-4895 (or its equivalent) @ 2800 fps. It's maximum range was 3450 yards. Military 30-06 was not "downloaded." per se, compared to civilian loads; it is simply the performance specified by the War Department and the Army. Their testing had to take into account not just how the cartridge would function in a bolt-action, but in automatic weapons such as the Browning BAR, Johnson light machine-gun, and M191 Browning medium machine gun. For the 30-06 case, a 150-grain bullet at 2800 fps is not in any sense a "tame" or weak load. While it is possible to squeeze another 150-200 fps out of it in a bolt-action, there would have been no reason to do so in a military-pattern firearm. It would have increased recoil, hastened wear-and-tear, and hurt accuracy for only a modest gain in power and range. When propellant chemistry advanced during/after WWII, thanks to R&D at DuPont and elsewhere, it became possible to achieve the same performance with a 150-grain bullet using less propellant and hence a shorter case. If you have ever seen a round of M2 Ball sectioned or taken apart, you will note that the powder load did not entirely fill the case anyway. That also helped the designers of 7.62NATO/.308 when it came time to shorten the older cartridge. That's how they moved from 7.62x63 to 7.62x51.... As a rule of thumb, loaded to its full-and-maximum potential, bullets etc. alike, the long-action 30-06 will deliver 150-200 fps greater MV than the short-action .308 Winchester/7.62x51 NATO. The shorter cartridge keeps pace, performance-wise, until around 175-180 grains, when the greater case volume of the '06 begins to really tell...

I'm waiting for a company to make a DPMS AR-10 style 30-06 semiautomatic rifle. Several companies make them for 308. I realize that's more of a battle rifle standard, while 30-06 is more of a hunting cartridge, at least these days. I understand why the 308 was developed. They wanted a shorter cartridge. Still, 30-06 in a modern semiautomatic rifle would be great. So far, the only one I know of, is a modern BAR, and it costs $6,700.

Since the 308 was designed to be "just like the 30.06" ballistics wise, the results make perfect sense. After all, it was designed for the military with specific requirements to be like the 30.06 only in a smaller form so that more ammo could be carried. Yes, the 30.06 has a small, insignificant in practice, advantage when looking at the numbers but would a deer say..."hey, shoot me with at sissy 308 would you"? I think not. LOL

I asked my dad the .308 vs. 30-06 question a few years ago. He said that with a rifle barrel up to 22” in length, there’s not much difference in performance between a .308 and a 30-06. He said that the.308 seemed to be more consistent and more accurate, shooting the same 150 grain projectile. His theory was that you needed a longer barrel length to burn that extra powder and gain the extra velocity of the 30-06 cartridge.

@TROOPERfarcry 3 жыл бұрын
The issue is that while the 30-06 can theoretically be made to handle heavy 200+ grain bullets, most off-the-shelf rifles don't have the twist-rate to support that theoretical advantage. Also, while there is obviously more case-capacity, the maximum pressures for the two are different, with the 308 having a higher safe maximum pressure. The ability to load hotter in the 308 is usually enough to make the cartridges more-or-less interchangeable. - The 30-06 isn't less effective just because it's a 100 years old, but it is designed around powders that are more-or-less outdated.

@@TROOPERfarcry No they are not that close. The added capacity of the 06 allows me to push a 180 gr bullet to extremes wherein the bullet will still expand upon impact. Not so the .308, to achieve good velocity at distance a lighter bullet must be used. I have nothing against the 308 but from much experience I sold my 308 and kept the 30-06. If you want to test a 308 against a rifle fairly close then test it against a .275 Rigby. The advantage of the 308 is the shorter case so it can be used in short action black rifles.

You have to take into consideration what velocities are present at the target and what projectile differences there is . Projectile softness and construction differences can skew the results also . It appeared to me that the 30-06 projectile expanded more violently and broke the first paver in more pieces . That would translate to a larger wound channel . I have used 308 W and 30-06 a lot and I have no doubt that the 30-06 with the heavier bullets it can push has more killing power than a 308 W .

Appreciate the test and all your work. Not sure it proves much however unless we start hunting pavers. My guess is a 44 mag would do pretty much the same thing at this range. Both these are tremendous calibers for almost anything in the lower 48. It also might be more fair to compare these two with a normal loading of 150 for the .308 and 180 for the 30-06. As an example if you were comparing a 26-06 to the 30-06 you would use different weight bullets for a fair comparison even though the 30-06 could also shoot anything the 26-06 could. In off the shelf ammo the .308 has the advantage of being a newer round and not downloaded for older guns. When I started hunting I bought a 30-06 because I waned to hunt elk and moose besides deer. I still think a hand loaded 180 Nosler Partition at 2700-2800 is a wonderful killer and has always done it for me. When in Alaska I always thought when hunting moose that it would suffice for big bears if you happened to bump into one even if not the first choice.

30-06 is a much heavier round: exactly! you're using a long action rifle with a cartridge half an inch longer and 15-25% more powder for what? 100-150fps extra? if you add another 0.15" length use can use a 300winmag instead :) Also, nothing stopping you from loading heavy bullets in your 308 either. Fired 220gr @ 2450 fps handloads once with plenty of pressure safety margin even with lower CIP specs

With the lighter bullets this is very true. 30-06 doesn't typically really shine until you use heavier bullets with slower powders....then the 30-06 shows it's true potential. Of course many hunting loads below 170grains both will be so close that for must the difference will be negligible.

Well done and I hunt with both of those calibers and it seems like I usually lean more towards grabbing the 308 over the 30-6 mostly because the 308 seems to have a little less recoil than the 30-06 but then many times I do hunt with my 30-06 and I have never lost a deer or anything else I've shot with either caliber due to not having enough power.
@paulhomsy2751
@paulhomsy2751 4 жыл бұрын
Exactly the outcome I expected. Unless you use different weight bullets, the amount of damage will be the same. The 150 fps difference isn't enough to cause more damage. It just reaches further in the field. These bullets aren't armor piercing...You would get similar results with this bullet shot out of a RUM.

Your observation is correct: Propellant technology during the time of the Second World War was not as advanced as it later became. The 30-06 case was not filled to capacity when firing a 150-grain bullet, as in the M2 version of the cartridge. This is in part because the M-1 Garand, the world's first widely-issued self-loading military service rifle, was not designed to fire high-pressure hunting loads of the kind used in bolt-actions by hunters of big game. You needn't take a bear-hunting cartridge to war; something suitable for medium game - such as deer - is quite ample to the task. The "empty space" as you term it was the 12mm case length they removed to make the short-action 7.62x51 NATO (or in civilian guise, ,308 Win.). Modern propellants made it possible to get the same level of performance out of the shorter case with the same caliber/weight and type of bullet, an FMJ or ball round of ~ 147-150-grains at about 2800 fps. Both the M-1 and M-14 like powders in the IMR-4895 or IMR-4064 burn-rate range. Military ammo contracts were filled with propellants with similar specs, but blended in custom lots. However, the two cartridges are not equivalent in every way. The longer 30-06 case, when loaded with modern propellants and projectiles and to the limits of its design, hits harder and shoots farther than the short-action .308. It is also capable of handling heavy 190-220-grain projectiles which are too much for the short-action .308 (Yeah, you can use 'em in a .308 case, but they don't perform as well as they do out of a long-action case).

Yay! Pavers! Been waiting for this since you shot that trailer hitch ball! 🙆‍♂️🤷‍♂️💁‍♂️🤷‍♂️🙋‍♂️🕺🙅‍♂️🤷‍♂️🙋‍♂️🤷‍♂️💁‍♂️🙆‍♂️🕺 [me doing the ancient chinese obnoxious dance of way too festive commotion] I have scraped my knees on pavers. I have loaded and unloaded tonnes of pavers with my bare-ish hands (wore gloves most of the time). I have swept piles of left-over cracked pavers 'till I was blue (or purple) in my face. I was left with the task when a foreman knocked over a 1.6 tonnes pallet of ten by ten inch pavers with the fork loader, piling each and every knocked over paver on an empty pallet, and throwing the cracked or splintered pavers in a dumpster. I even dropped a 2½" twelve by twelve over my foot. If I hadn't been wearing steel cap boots, I'd broken my foot (I did scrape my shin and performed a wicked dance of loud commotion). Pavers are so-o-o great when they are neatly tugged in, shoulder to shoulder, making a nice and walkable pavement. Up until that point, pavers just [whooooooot]. Thank you for extended my long overdue wrath to two of those mischievous rascals! I will celebrate with a cup of gunpowder tea, "borrow" a cookie from my daughter's cookie jar, and repeat my dance of commotion! 😄😄😄 PS: both calibers did an outstanding job, the footage was awesome, and thumbs up to Jerry for sending the ammo, and HeavyMetal for the pallet idea.

Because well not only is 30-06 too big for most animals, it may not be legal. .308 is very common.

Somebody once said you won't see an advantage out of the 30-06 until you get to a 24" barrel length. I seem to remember that the Ruger Americans full size are 22" so this result made sense.

For these the paper plate test is the definitive one. How about putting up one paver then a stack of paper plates behind to ss what is left after going thru the paver?

A good lesson here for hand loaders. Trying to squeeze out every last fps of velocity possible just doesn't get you a whole lot in downrange performance. When you find a precise load, stick with it. There are few hunting applications where a 30 cal bullet going at 3k fps is any sort of an advantage over 2800 fps.

I have a Ruger American in.308 & a Remington A303 in 30-06 they are both great rifles & not for sale! I also inherited my grandfather's Winchester model 100 in .308; I have take several deer with both calibers & didn't have to track a blood trail very far! I have also take deer with my Winchester 94 30- 30 & my Ruger Blackhawk in .45colt. So I wouldn't hesitate to use any of my guns to take a deer or big game. I am a big fan of the 30 calibers for taking big game, guess I'm just old school my late grandfather believed in being a sportsmanship and the one shot one kill skill set...we are meat hunters & if the buck had a nice set of antlers, well that was a bonus! So keep up the great videos! & like my hero Roy Rogers always said" May the good Lord take a liking to you & HAPPY TRAILS" ( I actually got to meet Roy jr.( Dusty) Rogers at a concert in my hometown before he retired from the Son's of the Pioneers and He is one of the kindest,gentlest,most humble of Christian men that I have ever met!)

Little known fact the 7.62x51 is actually lower pressure and velocity than 308 Winchester.

Wasn't that to accommodate automatic fire? Something about wear and tear on all the li'l bitty parts of machine guns. I vaguely remember something about the ranges the average conscripted infantry engages the enemy at, rarely exceeds 75 meters (roughly 84 yds) for riflemen and 400 meters (roughly 450 yds) for machine guns. Probably a different story for armies not based on conscription, but back in the days of the 7.62x51, most NATO armies were either entirely or to some extend based on conscription. I could be miles off . . .

The powder charge in the .30-06 must be comparable to the 7.62mm NATO, which makes sense as both are Winchester with likely identical bullets. Though it’s not marked so, that .30-06 is likely safe to use in an M1 Garand without bending its op rod.

Same bullet and same velocity with that light a bullet. The 30/06 handles heavy 180 grain and 200 grain and 220 grain bullets at higher velocities then the 308.

I know a lot of the community tries to say there is not much of a difference but honestly when I shoot each I feel it, 30-06 has a clear advantage in power, the .308 still is an awesome cartridge!
