Hornady 60gr soft point at about 3600fps was my go to for years. Great expansion and decent penetration out to 300. The rifle was a remington 788. Shot so many prairie fogs with that rifle I wore the barrel flat out. A few years ago I got hold of an H&R 223. It took several deer including two bucks over 200 lbs with factory hornady 55gr vmax. All heart/lung shots out to 200 yards

Great job, and congrats on the deer. That's awesome that you let your son take the shot. He'll remember that when he's grown. All centerfire is legal in Texas too. A lot of people hunt with 22-250 and 223. We have a donation thing in Texas also. I bought a CVA Cascade in 7 rem mag a couple years ago. This is the best rifle for the price that I've seen. It looks like a plastic stock, but it's actually fiberglass. Bergara barrel, with a really nice trigger.

Fantastic video. Thank you so much for your knowledge and wisdom. I have always loved the .22-250 and the 220 Swift. Both are speed demons and they deliver extreme shock to the deer when the animal is hit in the proper area; the central nervous system!

So excellent shot made by your boy, & certainly not trying to take away from that. ( i.e., just going to mention that in Canada that wouldn't have been legal). Apropos a minimum caliber is stipulated to hunt deer here Ontario, that being; a 25 caliber is the smallest usable to harvest a deer. You of course mentioned you would only let the shot be taken within 50 yards ( eg. which of course is good on you for a humane harvest.) My congratulations to your boy, & for him to acknowledge that donations to the hungry; by a hunter who's freezer is already full, is very much a native American thing to do. That is how the Indians managed to survive, long before us pioneers got here; & for that I salute you both. A very short, albeit excellent episode; depicting the essence of a hunter & provider!

Congratulations to WTW Jr. My aunt used to use 22-250 for deers here in WI. Personally, the lightest caliber I use for them is .243 Win. It scoots out at 3000fps +/- depending on which load you use. Savage Axis II, Hornady American Whitetail 100gr has been a very successful combination for me. I'd be willing to try the Remington 95gr Core-lokt tipped once I burn through the Hornady stuff but it'll be a while at this rate, 1 shot= 1dead deer. Best wishes for Happy New Year Y'all.

I have a Remington model 788 chambered in 22-250 that I purchased back in the very early seventies. Great rifle, I used to enjoy hunting ground hogs with it back before all the farms were sold or locked up. I only took one deer with it but it was very effective. The 788 was a low budget rifle but mine has done me well for fifty years and is to this day just as it was the day I purchased it. I can't believe what happened to Remington Arms.

I took an Oklahoma Holiday Antlerless hunt doe with a 55 grain Barnes tipped expanding solid copper bullet a few years back with my 223. It dropped in it's tracks. Heart/lung shot. My conviction with all calibers (for deer hunting) is both bullet placement and bullet construction. We all understand placement. Construction meaning is the bullet built to perform adequately on chosen game at given velocities, etc. Just my two cents.

Great video. Love 22-250. I have a Marlin XL bolt with Remington 26" varmint barrel. I upgraded the stock to a Boyd's, as I didn't like the black factory synthetic stock. It is pretty darn accurate. I got my hands on some Hornady 60 grain loads that I know some hunters use successfully for hogs. I'll bet these would be awesome for deer. 3600 FPS. That extra 10 grains of weight should add a lot more downrange punch.

Congratulations! The 22-250 is capable of punching above its weight class. I've killed 2 mule deer bucks with a 22-250. Both were a little over 100 yards. Neck shot was straight on. Dropped in its tracks. Second buck was shot through the lungs and stumbled 3 steps before falling nose first on the ground.
@aaronwentzel41452 жыл бұрын
I love the V tip in my .223. I've had issues with rounds like the 62 grain Fusion and Winchester 64 grain soft points not expanding and just passing straight through, even after hitting ribs, (though deer still succumbed but felt a better option was available) so I switched to the V-Max and never turned back. Well placed shots, even the full frontal I had this year on a doe at 60 yards, with a 50 grain V- Max, were absolutely devastating. Whole boil maker was liquefied and never over penetrated past the diaphragm. She went 15 yards and was done before hitting the ground and you couldn't really tell she'd been shot at all, minus some blood from nose, so pelt was absolutely beautiful. Having it tanned for a blanket. So glad you had a great hunt with your son. Merry Christmas!! P.S. Never shot a 22-250 but they do often fire similar rounds (weight, design etc) of the .223/5.56, but obviously much faster. So I assume it works great on deer. In Norther Wisconsin where I hunted this year, with the thick woods, or the swamps around Lake Winnebago where I hunt other years, shots are rarely over 100 yds and most are less than 50 yds, so I feel confident shooting a .223 (.22 caliber) for deer, despite some people disagreeing. I don't fret because I've seen the results and the last thing I'd want is to cause undo suffering. I've taken 4 deer with my .223 in 6 years. Every one was a single shot, never over 75 yds and none ever went further than 15-20 yds after being hit. So again, I think the 22-250 would be a great round for deer! Thanks for the video!

At further distances, the varmint bullet will open less and penetrate more, due to velocity loss, up close it will have the least penetration and most violent expansion. Bullet expansion is velocity dependent. I've killed many deer with a .22-250rem, headshots and heart lung shots. I've used 55gr psp Remington loads on the chest and the deer didn't act hit, the bullet zipped through so fast, but trotted of and died within 50 yards. 55gr V-max on head and chest shots, no issues. 52gr speer HP heads hot, devastating.. My favorite for deer is the 55gr hornady GMX, bullet holds together at any distance, plenty of expansion and punches through at any angle.

Only head shot I ever took was on an 8pt with a 54 Hawkins at 3 feet. lol He had a 32 inch arror from the ham right up his tenderloin and was just dragging along. I was ground hunting and it was either shoot him or get stepped on. My favorite stand rifle was an OLD Ruger M77 target 243 with a bull barrel and a Leupold on it. First off congrats. Love to see someone using a round that just can't kill deer killing deer lol. The amount of people who are in the comments telling you that you should have used a different bullet are idiots. They wanna criticize even though you literally couldn't have done a better job with what you used already. Deer aren't magical. The average buck is 14 inches wide at the shoulders. 7 inches to the middle of the chest cavity. Been trying to tell people for years that these varmit rounds just liquefy everything in the chest cavity fo the speed and violent expansion. Nothing lives without the stuff in the chest cavity getting oxygen or moving blood. I hear tales of varmiy bullets not killing deer. My favorite is the eldx. The 6 5 eldx just doesn't perform at close range. It don't pentrate. In my experience it's almost always a bad shot instead of the bullets fault. We just find excuses to justify our failures. From a fellow Tennesseeian keep up the good work.
