Honestly, I think iSmell was just ahead of its time. I think with VR being somewhat big today, this would have been a perfect compliment to a VR setup.
@jollygreenjeff26403 жыл бұрын
There was actually a vr thing that was made similar to that! Sadly it began to roll out just before the us flavored vape ban, and the smell cartridges counted as vapes
@acedigibits90793 жыл бұрын
That was exactly my Thoughts. iSmell tech is already used in amusement parks for 3D simulation to give a cohesive experience.
@DanielsChannelNo23 жыл бұрын
None of them actually managed to mix smells to create believable new ones(only mixed the given ones in a SINGLE experience) ,the prob always was that for every experience u would need specific cartridges which is very unpractical,so u only see it in amusment parks which run the same experience on a daily basis. home use was allready dead atm they annouced it and most people did realise that,Ismell and a likes wasnt rly new too tbh our warner brothers park uses that for more than 10 years. so yeah it earns its spot here and it wasnt ahead of its time
@Fayevalentina5413 жыл бұрын

The PSVITA made me legitimately sad. The problem is, it was an incredible console, and still is today if you can get your hands on one and a custom SD Card to PSVITA card converter. You can jailbreak it and download free games and even a PSP emulator, which is incredible. As Arun said, though, initial sales are what matters in the long term.
@lukalazeta50083 жыл бұрын
Great console and not expensive, i mean like just s console. But games and sd card were so expensive that people just quit from it. And why wouldn they. Imagine you buy the console and you dont have space for few games. But they build problem than they make a solution for the problem they make. I know that money is important but you cant be a dic*. And there sre few exsmples. Like vita or that party scamer ending in jail. And now world know him as a scammer who screwed up many people, and even the place where it was is not his😂😂😂. Sounds funny now but it wouldnt br if i paid thousands of $$$$ and in the end they sent me to simulation of Survive the wildness with the Bear Grills.

The Netherlands had quite a solid system for covid tracking. It constantly sends out a Bluetooth signal containing a code. When you are close to someone else, it exchanges codes. Once someone was tested positive in an official testing facility, they would send a notification to all phones that pinged your code the past 5 days. Fully anonymous, no data tracking, no GPS, just a smart use of Bluetooth. And most important; it was quite cheap to develop.
@SuvuIC Жыл бұрын
They also used a very similar system here in Norway! Using Bluetooth and swapping codes
@rjmunro Жыл бұрын
@@SuvuIC And so did the UK. The £37 billion figure for the app is wrong, it was more like £35 *million*. £37 billion was the whole cost for setting up all the Covid testing centres and stuff. The app was a bit of a mess because they wanted to use Bluetooth in a way that is not allowed on iOS. Apparently the developer found some sort of workaround, which was fine for testing, but meant the app was rejected by the Apple review process, so that had to convert to doing a standard Covid app using the APIs specifically provided by Google and Apple, like everyone else. I don't think the vertical thing is true, although bluetooth can probably travel through a single floor and therefore get a false alarm.

Could you imagine an Ismell with VR, though? They should have partnered their technology. Gta 5 is fucking amazing in 3D. The only problem is Nvidia doesn't update their drivers to allow 60 Hz 1080p. It's 720p 60 Hz or 1080p 24 Hz. I haven't tried VR but on 3D TV it's amazing. A Sony W955B from 2014. They killed 3D off too fast. Right before it became great really. VR in current form is a real fail imo because almost nobody can afford, place or use it. If some glasses and a blu-ray player are a problem what is a full-on helmet and all that specialized hardware and those cables? Kinekt and other games with 3D TV's that sell real movement like the PS move did would absolutely rocket off the shelves today.

@@zteaxon7787 I was going to mention something on these lines. I had a nice Sony 3D LED TV and gaming on it was awesome due to the high hardware based refresh rate. Mine was 120Hz at a time when 1080p monitors with anything above 60Hz weren't a thing. Yes I know this mean very little today but for the average console gamer, having that kind of response is awesome. (yes, consoles did not support that refresh rate but later, PC did and that kept these TVs relevant). I only replaced mine because I upgraded to a 4K model, also from Sony.

As many would say, the PSvita was more of a marketing fail, not a tech one (unless we count the gimmick rear touchpad. But again, many more consoles had worse gimmicks that often rendered many things unplayable, yet are considered successful, so this is definitely not such a "tech fail to forget", nowhere as bad as kinect). Many people will say how "it has no games and the very few ones are all anime games or VNs" but i had 2 of them in my lifetime (the first one being stolen, so i bought a refurbished one later on a really good deal), they were 2 different models too. I enjoyed them a lot and i still enjoy the second one, still able to find things to do with it. And as far as anime/VNs go i only had 2 out of dozens of games.
@kfcnyancat3 жыл бұрын
I'd say the tech failure was Sony's stubborn insistence on proprietary media which had been a problem with the company for a while, but reached a boiling point with the Vita because of how expensive the memory cards were, and the fact that they ONLY worked with the Vita and were only ever intended for the Vita vs. the Memory Stick which worked with the PSP and Sony's cameras, music players, cell phones, laptops, and PDAs, basically being a format that lost a format war to SD. I know that was what killed the Vita for me.

The app and previous attempts to make it was part of that and cost a total £76 Million, which is still a lot but not even half a percent of the total budget. I’m not sure what kind of technology you think it would be able to have but it’s impossible to just create any imaginable smell on earth from a little device like that. Programmer here: Using MS Excel (any version) for storing the Covid data is mind boggling insane. If I'd be the boss of a team, the suggestion alone would mean I'd have to think about firing the guy who made it. Excel is not meant for that. At all. This is like you building a warehouse and you choose to use small boxes made to keep Lego separated for that. The Excel format is complicated and wasteful because Excel allows such things as graphs to appear in your table and other gimmicks that a database totally does not need. Even the CSV format, that is a file with everything in clear text, separated by commas, is better for that task. Even MS Office has a better tool for that, MS Access. So, there is exactly zero reason to use Excel. Also, there are some canonical choices for database systems, which to a programmer are widely known. And *way easier* to use than the complicated Excel format. Plus, the Microsoft part implies that the servers run on Windows. Who in gods name runs servers on Windows? So again, mind boggling insane decision.
@michaelhanson57732 жыл бұрын
Wait, so you cannot run a version of MS SQL server on windows? Or run a Windows Server version in a hyper-v virtual machine on windows? A comma delimited file is just a file and excel can be used to open, save, and modify those. This would be the same as a Sqlite file and using a gui to maintain it. Yes there are limitations in excel that do not exist with proper databases (access still has a database size limit and so does the free versions of sql server). Using microsoft excel to store large amounts of records can have its place and probably was suggested by someone that really didn't know better. We have non developers where i work constantly ask for excel files or access databases for listing tons of data because that is just what they know and it is up to those in our Applications Development teams to tell them what they can get and why. I can make any program that writes and modifies files for excel, access, and proper relational databases. They each have their place but when you have people sitting behind a desk asking for things they want, they will ask what they know and AD needs to tell them what actually needs to be done and how depending on their requirements. I am not going to be doing an access database or something every time a customer of mine at work asks for data... Excel is very powerful for what its purpose is if you know how to import data to it and set up queries... You just may not be able to have millions of rows of data and the files may be quite a bit bigger than other solutions but unlike swl server or db2 or other proper database, you dont really need to develop any front end since the users will already know how to use excel and do filters and view data properly. Now, still excel would not be a solution for tracking covid just due to the shear size of data that was going to be stored. Like he said, just poor planning.
@Ksorkrax2 жыл бұрын
@@michaelhanson5773 Why do you start with stuff about Windows I never said? Why do you structure your sentences containing Excel and Access somewhat like they'd be alike? And seriously, why would you want to use something (Excel) as a database that clearly isn't? Because people want to look at it? Give them a proper tool to look at a normal database type. Plenty of tools already existing that can use SQL as interface, for instance.
@michaelhanson57732 жыл бұрын
@@Ksorkrax excel has its place for displaying data for people. Never said it was the best for all situations. Access, like excel, still has its limitations and has its place. A developer should know enough to know when either excel, access, or an actual proper database should be used. If a customer asked me to give them an excel file with 20 columns and maybe 5k rows, i would have no issues with excel. If they asked for 50k rows and data that would be in several sheets and needed to be related or something, i would go with access and a simple viewer for it. If they wanted a system designed for something like storing covid data and feeding an alert system, i would have recommended a proper sql server. Lastly, your last sentence in your first comment said "who in gods name runs servers on windows". The fact is that you can and people do. You can fully install sql server if you want on a windows machine. Not saying that you should or shouldn't, i was just responding to it saying that you can and yes, there are times when i could be considered acceptable as long as licensing was followed. I do agree with you though... If this was an IT person that came up with using excel for that system, they should probably have been fired as it needed a proper server solution.

@@michaelhanson5773 As for the first block, then why are you writing this? Yes, Excel is fine for creating tables, haven't said otherwise. As for the second block, you can totally do so, yes. It just is a bad choice. I thought that me writing "who in god's name" would make it clear that I refer to it being a bad idea rather than impossible or even hard. ...so... you basically agree with me? The thing is, I am trying to figure out what your intention is, overall.

It should be 'an' due to the vowel pronunciation at the beginning of the word 'Xbox' (pronounced: ex-box). Another example for where 'an' is used for a word starting with a consonant: "An FBI investigation" (FBI is pronounced as eff-bee-aye).

Smell and taste are closely related so being able to smell can also be used to appreciating taste. That said the ismell technology could prove extremely useful for content that discusses food

I think what it truly needs is the ability to recognize the chemical make-up of any existing smell through a smell scanner. That would shift the focus from trying to sell a product with related smell to selling as many of the smell capsules as possible because consumers want to recreate a particular smell: copying perfume, fetishism, flower fields, addictive smells, etc...

Funnily enough, the Kinect is now somewhat desirable for people getting into VR, because it can give you full body tracking for cheap and with less hassle than setting up, charging, and putting on trackers, especially if your headset didn't need/come with the base stations needed for tracking
@wendigolover34792 жыл бұрын
yes. even though you have to face in one direction or the tracking will become janky. this $5-20 sensor is pretty damn good compared to $500-800 basestation setups
@syntheticant81722 жыл бұрын
Why do people act like putting trackers on your body is even somewhat a problem? At what point did we go from "I love my kids so much, God I hope I live tonight and wake up tomorrow" to "What? I have to bend over and wrap a small tracker around my foot?!?" as if it's even worth mentioning. What's next, plugging a console in is too much effort? Getting out of bed is too much effort?

Another thing that happened with the Kinect: Microsoft massively nerfed the retail product after initial reveals. The device didn't have the capabilities they initially advertised and promoted. If it worked as well as it initially did, it may have been a literal game-changer for not just games, but as an input.
