Definitely talk to Odin Works. You were noticing yesterday that the neck/shoulder area of the fired brass had kind of a rounded shape. Seems like that could be an indicator of excessive headspace, as well -- like there was space between the brass and that area of the chamber when firing, and the rear of the brass was jammed in the chamber, forcing the neck end to expand into that area, but there wasn't enough pressure to fireform it completely to the chamber. Unlikely, given the velocities you were getting, but stranger things have happened.

To avoid cutting Hair over the phone, I would send it back to Odin Works before messing with it. If they don't make it right, That tells us (The consumer) That Odin Works Makes absolute Garbage and should go out of business. I agree with Tom Herbert and feel that you have excessive head space, a Hornady comparator should tell you what is going on, all the polishing in the world won't fix a head space problem. My advice is to bench the project till you see what Odin will do for you and if they make a bunch of excuses Buy a White Oak barrel. I know White Oak would make it right or refund your money. Your suggestion Tom is in good order.

If you watch the video you'll see the recoil is still partially cycling the BCG. What is happening is the partial cycling is essentially rechambering a fired case into the chamber. With the softness of Nosler brass, it isn't springing back toward sized dimensions and getting stuck in the chamber.

Had the same thing happen with factory 5.56/.223 rounds. Case rim thickness/out of round was the culprit. It wasn't every round but one box it was about 3/4 of the box. No other ammunition that I have either bought or reloaded for has done it since. Same exact signs your having. It had me chasing the wrong thing.

Rough chamber. I've encountered, and fixed, this proble, on both an 11-87 20ga and a 30-06 auto loading Remington. The easy solution is a chamber home from Brush Research Manufacturing. They sell "Flex Hones" in various chamberings and grits. They do not list a 22 nosler, but do list a 6.8SPC that should would work if you cut the 6.8 neck off. Or they may be able to custom make a 22 nosler upon request. Before discovering flex homes, I tried small base dies, trimming action springs, and even adjusted gas port diameter.....10min with a hone and it's fixed.

I have had this problem on multiple 300AAC barrels. Used a 12 gauge cleaning brush and metal polish in the chamber. Rand on the end of a cleaning rod with a drill. Couple of minutes and then cleaned the crap out of the barrel. Never had any problems on those barrels after that. Using a Flex Hone is probably the way to go though. Which I will do in the future.

Watching you beat open your now, bolt action semi-auto with a 2x4, the only thing that comes to mind is.....Send that POS back.... I just put together a 6.5 grendel and was going to use a odin works barrel but decided not to (thank god) after finding people who had issues like these with odin barrels. This just nailed their coffin shut for me. While they may have "great customer service" it would be better if their products worked and nobody knew they had great customer service.

Hey! I also have a 22 nosler and from some of the stuff I’ve read was nosler wasn’t making the brass right in the beginning. Some of the newer brass seems to hold together a little better. I can get 3 firings off a new piece and you may as well throw it in the scrap pile.

If you used a go/no go guage you might find that the no go guage actually fits due to improper headspace - the margins are small and for a reason - especially an issue with this case design - which in my opinion is asking for problems as the angle at the rear of the case gets a lot of pressure and wants to contort

BL-C2 is becoming one of my favorite ball powders. I never gave it much of a chance before as H335 and TAC were my favorite ball powders, but BL-C2 is giving me great velocity and very good accuracy in several calibers. Id send your upper back to Odin and tell them to fix it or send you a new upper Ive read that you can get 3000 fps with a 75-77gr bthp in the 22 Nosler with 18" barrel. Looks like that isn't true, but Ill wait and see what how fast your able to push the 69gr after you get the chamber problem fixed

It looks to me like the chamber tool marks are causing excess friction due to the fireforming. Some tool marks should be expected from a brand new barrel from a mass producing company like Odin, but not so much that your extractor is nearly ripping the rim off of the case on bolt unlock with what should be more than adequately safe pressure loads.

Nice group with the Varget JRB. I suppose it's possible your chamber could be out of spec or have a burr. Could also be a bad batch of overly soft and or out of spec brass (probably unlikely, but possible) Thanks for the update, keep up the great vids JRB.

Agree with other comments - Flex Hone (with some gun oil) - however it doesn't get the lugs. Odin will probably say you should full length resize the brass first (Nosler does suggest this).

Odin Works has a 1 min moa guarantee, and I would hold them to that in this situation. In my experience, their customer service is usually top notch. I would call them, explain the issue, and more than likely they will want to make it right. Your using quality components at low charges, shouldn't be sticking in the chamber. The chewed up rim and ejector marks are extremely common with the 22 Nosler currently.
@youbchillin81277 жыл бұрын
after the last group you shot you might try some more - the big thing I noticed was the cycling was way better - maybe the problem fixed itself - the point of breakin is not for the bore so much as the throut leading into the bore where they can't really get the polish on it that it needs - this is why some suggest 5 rounds 1 at a time - clean between each - then 5 to 10 rounds and clean after each set, etc - it varies as to how far some take this process - the point is to polish the transition area - having gunk in there may work against proper polishing

While I don't hate the fact that you shoot with the magneto speed chrony or the suppressor, I do think that in a testing platform that is attempting to develop reloads that are as accurate as possible, those items can introduce uncontrollable variables that are easily correctable by not using them. Your previous testing shows that the chrony changes POI, and it most certainly can change your barrel harmonics, which I would assume is not ideal for finding accurate reloads. The suppressor is another additional piece of gear that interfaces with your rifle, and could change your data if it isn't perfectly concentric with your bore and a whole host of other possibilities with gas pressures around the bullet and barrel harmonics. I think that a consistent testing platform with as few uncontrollable variables as possible would be better for developing accurate reloads, but either way, I like your channel. Keep up the great work!

Brass may be to soft.... years ago I had a 6mm-284 that I was having problems with the brass sticking with new brass and starting loads and I thought it was a rough chamber because of how the brass looked... My gunsmith got me different brass and the problem was gone.

JRB, pick up a mop for a 357, and some rubbing compound at advance and use that to smooth out the chamber, it may take awhile, you could polish it with a brass brush but it wont really cut heavy marks out, the white rouge would work but it may take to much metal off, i don't think you have a head space problem, i think they cut chamber like a weatherby, the on the shoulder, the datum line is right, your just fire forming to the shoulder, i think your reloads will be fine,stainless is twice as hard as steel, not stronger, and it is very sensitive to heat, it bows, buckles, twist and any other movement you can think of, love the vids, great job

I think you need to call Odin works and have them replace your barrel, they do offer a 1 MOA guaranty. I did alot of research on 6.5 Grendel barrels and found that Odin works had some fantastic reviews so I purchased a 20" barrel with a rifle length gas system. This particular barrel in 6.5 Grendel is very accurate and with the adjustable gas block works great with all bullet weights. Give them a call and see what they will do for you, I have never had to use there customer service but have heard that they aim to please.

Most of the excessive headspace issues I have seen exibit signs of insipeant case head separation. I'm betting on a rough chamber, and the wonky looking shoulder issue is just a product of it. It's hard to say without actually having gun and spent brass in hand though. Polishing the chamber (done correctly) shouldn't hurt anything, but I can also understand wanting to wait and see what OW says. If the roughness is in the neck/shoulder area, and that's where it isn't wanting to let go, that might explain that extruded looking neck.
@452Rob7 жыл бұрын
In fact, a poster below mentioned using a sticky case with some polishing compound and a rubber hose on a screw. That's not a bad idea but I'm not sure I'd want to polish with a deformed case and I can't figure out what he's talking about on the rubber hose thing and I'm a professional gearhead. A FLR'ed case with a screw screwed through a long spacer and then into the primer pocket that will chuck up in a drill will certainly work and then coat the case with polishing compound...something like Flitz or JB Bore Paste should be sufficient and won't remove more than scratches. Can't hurt and might be worth a try.

You should do a direct comparison to your 18in .223 for tomorrow's video to see how it stacks up against the 22 nosler. I would do it with the 69gr custom comp. so you can compare accuracy and velocity apples to apples.

That's really disheartening. Gotta love Varget, though. Speaking of which, my favorite handload in my AR puts 24.5 grains of Varget behind a 75-grain bullet, and that larger bullet leaves a 16" barrel at 2,595 fps. I'm shocked at how slow the 22 Nosler is, especially considering the high-pressure signs at a minimum charge.

I just listened to the end. A chamber bur does make more sense, aside from the marks on the head. This sound like what my 7mm-08 was doing to me. It took a while to polish the chamber out, too.

I agree with the others, talk to Odin Works before doing anything major. If you happen to have some Cero-safe chamber casting compound you could cast a mold of the chamber to see if there is anything hinky in it, but if there is a large bur that might even get stuck/damaged, but then you'd have your answer. I still am not seeing a great reason to jump on the .22 Nosler bandwagon though, 2600fps min load speeds isn't that grand, .223 Remington starting loads from Hodgon put 69grn SMK's at 2690-2800 out of a 24" barrel, even if you lop 3-400fps off for barrel length difference you could still make that up in the hotter .223 loads which reach 3000+fps in the data. I know looking at the Nosler load data for .22 Nosler, under the 69grn Varget max load it claimed 3054fps out of 24" barrel (roughly 40fps over the comparable .223 Varget max load) which isn't that impressive of a performance boost. So I'm not getting where the increased performance is hiding...

Did you full length size the brass before loading? I have the same marks and terrible time with not getting the brass out of the barrel, with a new 9mm barrel im shooting. turns out to be two fold, one the barrel is WAY too tight of a chamber and i have had to get a finish reamer to open it up to spec. also brass was not sized correctly, when measuring the brass the cases were .001 over spec, so im using a lee undersized die. to get the brass where it needs to be. both steps have solved my issues.

I've used oil soaked steel wool 0000 make sure it's not to abrasive and it has plenty of oil in it and a electric drill slow as you can go and just hit it check it then hit and check in til it looks smooth and what you want. Coat snug "barely stuck" fired case with powder graphite and fliz after uve screwed a screw in the primer pocket of the piece of brass. attatch a rubber hose to the screw and put the other end of the hose in a drill. work the case around inside the chamber with the drill for about 15 seconds at a time cleaning and checking the chamber with one of the sticky cases between cleanings. when ur sticky cases fall in and out freely, i polish for 15 more sec and shes done. Clean assemble and enjoy.

you could simply return it and get a 277 wolverine instead - especially since they have given it the public domain status and are attempting to get it SAMMI approval - you could help that along - for me it will be my families SHTF gun - once fired brass, barrel and flash hider swap and good to go - very inexpensive - off the shelf ammo and resized cases available - starline lined up to make specific headstamped brass soon - what is not to love - and that performance!
@JohnnysReloadingBench7 жыл бұрын
I was planning to buy a 277 wolverine but there are no 16" 1:7 barrels in stock. I was told they would be back in stock in around a week. That was like 3 weeks ago. I am quickly losing my enthusiasm for that project.
@youbchillin81277 жыл бұрын
I am liking the 12.5 in 1/11 twist as a general use and fun shooter - not going suppressed in near future or subsonic long term - basic SHTF type of shooter that is a blast to shoot if my 300 is any indication. The 277 seems to shoot better than the 6.8 spc as a short barrel - the powder is burning faster and more complete - love my 10.5" BHW 300 blackout which gets pretty good complete powder burn - love the poly rifling as well - the 12 week wait not so much - LOL - I have attempted to get them to send you a barrel to test though - will have to see. The one they sent to nutnfancy he simply crapped on it since they put a built in flash/compensator on it - sometimes that guy is an idiot - majors on the minors - if he stopped complaining about the hider long enough, he couldn't say enough about the accuracy he got with all the crappy ammo he uses - you have a propensity to give equipment a share evaluation - we appreciate that
