Seriously, I would like to see what this man is talking about. Can you not focus a bit on the whiteboard at any point? This is MIT and this has to be the best possible presentation of this subject? Not this one for me.

It is interesting what the professor says about how you must choose what to encode on a 1GB disc, either high quality audio or more time at less quality. However this is not how it came about. The acoustic characteristics of the CD were first selected and defined by Philips and Sony, THEN they picked the physical size of the CD, where Philips wanted a smaller size disc but Sony made it to be slightly larger in order to not let Philips have the upper hand. When talking about digital signal processing, it's not a good idea to talk about a commercial product unless you know all the details, otherwise you are almost certain to make mistakes, such as this one.
