Back in the 90's I worked at an AIDS hospice. And when several of the patients had passed away over different times, they asked for this song to be played at their funerals. Though I am a big nerd who loves The Highlander movies, because of my past work this song has a deeper meaning. And tied to the faces of many men who died for no reason.

This was written by Brian May as part of the movie Highlander and released in an album in 1986. Quite prophetic I think considering Freddie's diagnosis of AIDS a couple of years later that proved to be terminal. I find the song exactly as you described it..... like the end of a movie with a very sad ending. There will only ever be one Freddie Mercury.I Thank you for enjoying, reacting, and commenting.

I adore Freddie and he was the most amazing singer/performer. Brian said in their documentary that they were so fortunate to have him. I'm not quoting this exactly but he said something like they were fortunate to have him like lightning striking and they were lucky because they were fortunate to have it strike twice. Him saying that they had they incomparable Freddie Mercury. Then when they thought they were retired and finished touring their keyboard player Spike Edney, who has been with them since the early 80s calls and says I think I found your new front man. He doesn't sound like Freddie. When he performs the songs he makes them fit his voice but he's there to pay respect to Freddie. When Brian plays his solos he steps out of the spotlight to make sure all attention is on the others. I am only bringing him up now because when he sang Who Wants to Live Forever at the Isle of Wight with Queen, I cried it was so beautiful. Two perfect versions of the song. Both incredibly beautiful. I suggest you watch it to see why he is touring right now in Japan with Queen. I saw them in November when they toured the US and it was one of the best concerts I have been to in my 50 years of going to hundreds of shows.

I discovered Queen and Freddie Mercury about 15 years ago, so as long as I’ve been a super fan Freddie’s been deceased. There’s something ominous about hearing the man sing about dying when he himself died far too young. As much as I’ve made Freddie Mercury a part of my life, I still listen daily & watch reaction videos and I still get goosebumps during certain moments. Fred gave an interview with a reporter named David Wigg and David asked him how he wanted to be remembered after his death. This was a few years before he started showing AIDS symptoms. He said he didn’t want to be remembered as boring, but then he said “who cares? I don’t!”

“Who Wants to Live Forever” was composed by Queen guitarist Brian May and sung on the album version as a duet between himself and Freddie. Synths parts are played on a Yamaha DX-7 by Brian, and the orchestra was arranged and conducted by Michael Kamen. John Deacon, Queen bass player did not participate in the original recording (but the video features him playing a white double bass), and Roger Taylor, Queen drummer played some drum-machine parts and contributed backing vocals. The percussion was taken over by the orchestra as well as bass (double bass in this case). It serves as somewhat of a “love theme” of the film "Highlander", as it adds to the sub-plot of the movie (in the film, Freddie sings the first verse as well, unlike the album version, which has May singing the first verse). The members of Queen wrote some of the musical scores for the movie. The 1986 film "Highlander" is the story of an immortal Scottish swordsman who must confront the last of his immortal opponents, a murderously brutal barbarian who lusts for the fabled "Prize", the spiritual ability to know everything.
