Finally, PNSO gives us a spinosaurid many of us were hoping for besides Spinosaurus itself - Suchomimus. After that controversial “Sinopliosaurus fusuiensis” offering, and worries that that was in fact the rumoured Suchomimus that had been renamed Sinopliosaurus, Thabo will put those worries at rest.
Suchomimus is one of the most important and significant spinosaurids, informing the reconstruction of many others including the famous Spinosaurus. The reason why this is the Croc-mimic is easily apparent, and PNSO has captured the most important distinguishing feature of this dinosaur.
In a striking, welcome departure from its usual dark stripes on light pattern, this dinosaur sets itself a part with a very different and almost flamboyant flavour in its colouration and crest.

If they think Suchomimus' snout could be used a communication device, then I imagine the vocalizations would sound like a Gharial, with a range of buzzing and hisses emanating from the nose. I think that would be cool, especially if this idea can extend to other Spinosaurids like Baryonyx or Spinosaurus.

That's an interesting thought. I haven't looked into this; I'm afraid that my knowledge (and interest) in theropods is pretty wanting. The only thing I've read about dinosaur vocalizations have been about hadrosaurs 😁

Your videos are always extremely informative about the creatures themselves, and you nearly always display models that are decently accurate to our current understanding of the species. While I come for the figure review, I always stay to listen to all the great information and your personal stories and notes you add alongside the scientific information. I learn a lot. I'm sure this is just a side hobby you do, but honestly, with a little bit of re-branding and slightly different structuring of your videos you could absolutely create a video series similar to the "Your Dinosaurs Are Wrong" youtube channel, where you use the figure as a basis for a larger discussion about what the dino was like, it's discovery, anything controversial about it, possibly compare it to some older or retro figures you own, and of course, add in the personal touch of why you enjoy the figure or your personal thoughts about the dinosaur. Then, ensure the youtube thumbnail and title reflects the content of the video, such as "A deeper look at Suchomimus" or "The Crocodile Mimic from the Cretaceous" etc. Anyways, love the content regardless of the format! I just think you'd get a lot more people looking at your work if it was more obvious the video contained more than just the standard figure review that many other people do. Best of luck man!

@Jiggy Wow thank you so much for your heartfelt comment and advice! It deserves a full reply so here it is. First of all, thank you very much for your support! The science parts of my video were always for people like yourself who want to see not just the toy, but also want to learn a bit more about the animal on which it is based. I had a few intentions when I started my channel: 1) Of course to share my love of dragons and dinosaurs, and point out things people who have them may miss, and so appreciate what they have even more. 2) Help people decide if they want to purchase a model, especially if it’s something more expensive from China. But 3) it was to _sneak in_ a little bit of science, on the pretext of reviewing a model or toy, to get people interested in learning more 😁 Of course in the last couple years this ‘little’ sneak has grown quite substantial at times, but by and large it has always been a hidden, sneaky “Come for the model, stay for the science idea” 😁. There are many people who actually _don’t_ like my videos because they want to get to the ‘money’ and just have a look at the dinosaurs. I know that if I were to just focus on that, and try to be first, I could increase my viewership a lot. However that is not my purpose. For many years when I was reviewing only dragons, I had about 100 or two viewers. So this is pretty much a passion project. Indeed, for animals with very interesting backgrounds, I enjoy working on the science part even if I know it will delay upload for a few days, which is why sometimes you will see me review a PNSO later than others. But in a way that works too, because those who prefer just to look at the model can save themselves the time of watching my videos, and whoever still watches my upload will be viewers like yourself who would still like to see if there are any interesting scientific extras. I believe in putting something out into the world only if you can value-add, which is why I don't review dinosaurs that Western viewers get first, like the EoFaunas and the CollectAs. With many excellent reviews out already by the time I receive them, I don’t see the need unless I really have something interesting to add. With amazing channels like YDAW and E.D.G.E, very heavily focused on the science of paleontology, to be in the same niche I would have to do a lot more research to justify subscribers’ time, and that takes away from my actually reviewing the dinosaurs in depth. A rebranding along the same lines would actually scare off viewers who only want the model, but _might_ just be titillated with the science to learn more. That would not help one of my *sneaky goals* of the channel. 😊 Once again, thank you for your kind comment as well as your interest. I hope to continue reviewing models and of course, including the science parts. I’m delighted that are viewers like you who like the ‘extraneous’ bits. Viewers like you are more than enough reward!

@@DinosDragons No worries, I'm glad to simply be here to view whatever you put out. I'll enjoy it regardless of format! Just figured I'd give my thoughts as someone who also is in the dinosaur space, (I'm lead developer of the dinosaur game "Path of Titans" and I also manage our KZbin channel) and give some ideas if you wanted to take it to a more general audience. At the end of the day, this is your passion project and you're cultivating a very niche but dedicated following- and in today's world that can be essential. @@Jiggy... Good day! A while ago you gave me a suggestion to include some additional indication in order to broaden my reach. At that time I explained that the educational bit was done on 'stealth' to attract more mainstream viewers into the sciency aspects. I kept thinking about it however, and I recently realised that some kind of subtitle would actually be a helpful index for viewers who _were_ interested in various ideas that might have shared in the past but aren't going to sieve through a bunch of videos to find it. So I've started to include that in both the thumbnail as well as the title of the videos. It's been useful for me as a quick reminder of what I might have said and direct people to the right videos too. Now it's just a matter of finding the time to review and then retitle past videos! Just wanted to thank you for your suggestion as it was what set off this little train of thought. 😊 I appreciate all comments, sincere critique and suggestions from my viewers, which always add motivation and perspective to my little pastime. Have a good week ahead!

First of all, I'm so glad to see you back my dear Sir. But please look after yourself and don't make your eyes tired. Secondly, like you all, I'm actually surprised to see this glamourous little dude, because I expected PNSO to make a Suchomimus one day but not so quickly. I'm surprised to see how beautiful this actually is. And damn I love that head crest ❤. What do you think about those arms, my dear sir? they look a bit robust to me. When I imagine a Suchomimus I always imagine it more slender. Because mostly they ate fish and other aquatic animals (I guess). I think, unlike other meat eaters, these spinosaurids are less ferocious. But in no way I'm saying that they are skinny and weak. I don't know if I'm wrong, but I speculate that that's how they behaved. That being said I love this color pattern and those natural-looking stripes. And of cause, I'll imagine those yellow bits as mud and dust. That way I can look at this figure in a more natural way. I hope next year they will surprise us with more amazing figures like this. Until then let's save some money and keep our fingers crossed 🤭 Loved the video as always, my dear sir. Please keep up the good work and wish you all the best. And especially I wish you good health❤.
@DinosDragons
@DinosDragons Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your heartfelt words as always @Rajitha! I definitely think the arms look fine. One of the unusual aspects of Suchomimus I didn't mention is just how robust the arms were. Indeed, it was most similar to the megalosaurids. Many piscivorans do have to deal with strong, struggling prey as well. If you've ever tried struggling with an eel or fishing large fish I think you can imagine that. Have a look at David Hone's blog article here and see how massive the arm bones are 😊 archosaurmusings.wordpress.com/2012/05/24/suchomimus/ The colour is indeed incredible on this, and although some might find it too colourful, I love the head crest. It sure expands the possibilities of what these animals might really look like in real life. Finally, best to you and yours too. For the new year, health, hope, and happiness are things all good people could use more of!

So, so tremendously happy that PNSO decided to do a Suchomimus. Been wanting one and hoping that they would apply their sculpt and paint expertise to it - and they have! Am also so happy that it fits 1:35 scale perfectly, and that it is scientifically sound - they better be I guess, since there is so much fossil evidence. My only gripe is that Thabo doesn't seem to have nasal passages sculpted into the roof of his mouth. Does that detract from scientific accuracy? And do you think that's because of the narrowness of his snout? Looking forward to what they put out next! Wonder if one will appear right before the 25th...
@DinosDragons
@DinosDragons Жыл бұрын
Wow you are an optimist! 🤣 I was relieved that they managed to sneak one in already before year end! So far I think they've stuck to roughly once a month though so I doubt it. Ah yes, I had a look but I don't see any choanal openings. I see something that looks like a slit though it's hard to see. Perhaps it is because of the narrowness of the snout as you say. You have sharo eyes! I am personally not too concerned since it's hard to see the roof of the mouth, and more wishing they had given it a more obvious sacral ridge.

So, this is another home run for PNSO. I’ve always loved the niche oriented dinosaurs and spinosaurids in particular being a primarily piscivorid group of animals. I think the base paint showing through the blue can be played off as a paintwash, but yeah it does seem lacking. I suppose it can be expected, though, since if they did apply a generous enough paint to assure every copy had a solid coat, it might obscure the scale detailing with paint overfilling the crevices.
@DinosDragons
@DinosDragons Жыл бұрын
I wonder if it might have been deliberate. I notice that showing through sometimes in their Tarbosaurus, but a lot less severe than this. I think based off the paint in their Wilson, full colour might still be achieved without obscuring detail, although you might very well be right and this could be a deliberate choice. After all it doesn't seem likely that they would create something wonderful like this, and then have such a glaring oversight!

KZbin decided to delete my comments when I tried to edit... nice.... :P Anyway I love how gorgeous this one is! The colours of the crest and body look amazing! As for the spine I think they went for something more like some depictions I've seen (can't share links unfortunately 🙁Sorry if the comments went into your spam :P) where they basically lift the hip up a bit which further obscures the elongated spine. Granted I have no idea how accurate that may be but I've seen it done on museum reconstructions too. Combine that with all the flesh and the spine becomes quite hidden under it. Though it is still quite visible, the nice stripe going along it helping to draw attention to it too. User Franoys on Deviantart has a good depiction of Suchomimus which shows what I'm trying to talk about.

Thanks as always for your thoughtful comment! Well yes indeed, I think you are right. Franoys is one of my favourite DeviantArt artists and on balance, between exaggerating the 'sail' and underplaying it, I would prefer underplaying. My only thought here is that if PNSO does a Baryonyx, it might be hard to show the difference between a small sail and an incipient one like in Baryonyx, so it would have been nice to have something obvious to see. That said, muscle probably does a lot to obscure any 'sail' in the animal!

Well given the choice between the ZT and the Sinoplio, I would definitely say go for the ZT! Even though it's fragmentary, it's nowhere near as fragmentary as the Sinoplio, and in fact that tooth might not even be a spinosaurid tooth. And the ZT is one beautiful tyrannosaurid! Oh definitely, it could have had land prety as well! I didn't mention it in the video, as I didn't want to make it too long, but given how much further inland Suchomimus could have been, it would definitely have posed a danger to hapless land prey as well. I was eyeing Allosaurus, Torvosaurus and the carcharodontosauridae, do you have any recommendations for which one to get? Which ones are your favorites? The other ones I will be getting besides that are Suchomimus, Deinocheirus and maybe the Theranizosaurus. So that's why I wanted a 'generic' theropod to compliment the rest of the weirdos. :D

Hmmm... ok first of all, I would ask, hat is the most important aspect for you? For example, an obvious second to get would be Allosaurus, since it is the second best known meat eater for many people. But for some reason PNSO didn't give it the enlarged thumb claw. so if you're super sticky on accuracy that might rule it out. Also, it's a little hard to define a generic theropod nowadays, because most of the theropod families are getting more and more well-known. So, someone might decide they want a representative from each family, such as a tyrannosaurid, carcharotondosaurid, spinosaurid, allosauroid and so on. You seem to be building out a nice selection of theropods from different clades. So I would suggest getting Allosaurus next if you don't mind the thumb claw, and then a carcharodontosaurid, either Carcharodontosaurus or Acrocanthosaurus, based simply on which one you prefer the look and colour of 😊 The reason for this is that subsequent production runs often have inferior paint applications compared to the earlier ones. So if there is something you like the colour of, especially one with subtle fades and complex mixes, I strongly suggest you get those first. Good luck!

@@DinosDragons Thanks for the response, I'll probably pick up an Allosaurus! 😊 If the Torvosaurus was a tad bit larger I'd 100% go for that one. Love the silhouette of it, the arm to leg to head ratio is very satisfying for me. 😁

Go with the new meraxes. Great sculpt and painting. Allosaurus is too small...

You're most welcome! New sauropods in 1:35 will always be welcome, and I have a sneaking suspicion that sea reptiles from PNSO are on the way! 😁

It's similar to Sinopliosaurus, so I'm wondering if I should go. haha

Haha, well it's down to which one you personally prefer! As you can see from the video, both looks really good, especially the paintjob. But if you are a spinosaurid fan, then I think it's hard to get away from this beautiful Suchomimus!

I didn't like the painting that much. The light longitudinal spot seems to confuse the animal's silhouette, making it appear less robust. The rainbow crest, while beautiful, doesn't sound very believable to me. But, without a doubt, it is a magnificent figure.

Well I always say, it's actually a good thing if something makes you dislike a figure if it means that you will save money on it! 😁One thing that 'irritates' me about PNSO is that each and every one so far I have liked immensely, unlike in the past, so it's almost like I'm a completist when I don't intend to be.

When PNSO first announced this figure, I actually believed it was Baryonyx proper. The proportions do seem consistent with that genus. Whichever the case it serves as a pallet cleanser for the preceding Sinopliosaurus controversy. PNSO is to lauded for producing genera not usually represented in mass market figures. A Gigantoraptor for 2023 would be hailed with gusto, along with some dwarf island sauropods.

I would have thought that the 'sail' definitely fits better with the incipient one on Baryonyx, though with such attention to detail I wonder if PNSO would mess up. And yet some of their own artwork shows a different shape, which isn't the first time PNSO had a model that differed from its artwork. Definitely would welcome a Gigantoraptor and dward sauropods in 1:35 please! Although I have a sneaking suspiction that PNSO might have a sea reptile or two planned for us 😉 Lol palate cleanser indeed! I know that many people had a real foul taste with that Sinopliosaurus!

This is the review I was looking for! Thanks for comparing it with the Yvy figures’ Irritator. I really like Suchomimus but I want the Irritator to be the star of my shelf

You're most welcome! I figured most people who have the Irritator would want to see. The Irritator is definitely an amazing animal, but I'm sure you have room for a co-star or supporting cast member. The detail on the Irritator is just amazing, and worthy to match any other current spinosaurid on the market. I think it surpasses even the big Spinosaurus released by PNSO a few years ago. I can't wait to see what Dino Hazard comes up with next!
