I converted a 110vac full size. Ceiling fan into an alternator. No cogging. 40 volts turning by hand. It has #36 wire and could be rewound with #26 for lower voltage, higher current.

I B using dual hoverboard motors to make a vertical wind turbine/generator! They're fairly reasonable cost (especially if you can find one at a garage sale) or flea market as I did. I also bought one from Amazon and salvaged the motors for my current project. I do need a fair sized rotor to get results (I've got it mounted inside a H frame, BTW, thanks for the H frame idea Rob!)

I work in trades/construction and regularly see motors tossed in the bin that could be salvaged. Most common are fans (ceiling fans, bathroom vents, oven ranges). I'd love to see some 3D printed kits that could repurpose some of these motors. As much as I would like to take a few to tinker, I don't have the space nor the time for making my own kits. But if one was available I would at least build a few and give away some.

This is crazy... My brother-in-law was a production line engineer for a company making plastic panels, for greenhouses and that sort of thing. I explained to him how electric motors could generate, he didn't believe me. He was a stubborn cus. The next day he called me and said he bench tested motors at work and what I said was true. There are lots of sources of motors but one I like are treadmills because they are dc and get thrown out so often, and the motors are fairly high quality. Another commenter mentioned newer washing machine motors. They are great for turbines as far as I can tell. I have links to how to rewire them but I have never tried it.

Cedric Lynch's axial flux motors are the best i've ever found as both motors as well as generators. They are low rpm high torque motors that spin approximately 50rpm per volt with incredible torque. The AGNI motor I have can put out between .01hp-50hp (1watt-30kw) depending on input. More information: The Lynch motor is an unconventional design with a disc armature. It marries the advantages of a conventional, wound armature motor with the benefits of a flat (printed circuit) motor. It is similar to a pancake motor, but is more powerful than any of these technologies. The disc armature has magnets on both sides, doubling the available flux density and shortening the magnetic path. It therefore packs more power per pound and per cubic inch than any other motor technology. Of course such a revolutionary motor is not for every application - it is not as cheap as wound field motors, but for many applications it is a far superior motor. It has a previously unheard of power to weight ratio and also power to volume ratio. It is also highly efficient because of the double magnet design and associated short magnetic path. It also includes integral fan cooling. The Lynch motor is an important development which spurred other motor designers to improve their products to remain competitive, such as synchronus permanent magnet machines. As a result of the competition between manufacturers the cost of high performance motors and controllers has fallen dramatically. We hope the cost of solar cells also reduces to allow renewable transportation to develop as a viable alternative to carbon fuels. Cedric Lynch built his electric bike around a mid-drive configuration, also building one of the worlds most efficient light weight electric motors to power his rig reliably at 60-MPH for significant distances. He would later set several world records with his axial flux motor and bring it to market as the Lynch / Agni motor. Briggs and Stratton would eventually buy this technology which would lead to the Etek motor, which is now famous for making high speed efficient electric hot rods. Cedric uses to achieve high speeds is by following the rules of aerodynamics, and building a bike that is as aerodynamic and as efficient as possible. The other builders on this list bypassed this step, and Cedric uses this bicycle as daily transportation on real commutes. Although this high-efficiency motor uses “old school” brushes, this fact allows builders to use very affordable controllers. He has proven his design choices through thousands of miles of commuting, and the Lynch motor is highly respected. Cedric Lynch is known as the creator of the Agni Motor, a highly efficient electric motor that weighs around 25 pounds and can put out as much as 50hp. Cedric Lynch is a British 'mad scientist' type mechanical engineer obsessed with the idea of greener transportation. His interest has been in building a super efficient yet powerful vehicle that can serve as a car replacement. He started thinking of his own design for an electric motor in 1983 when he began entering competitions organized by the Battery Vehicle Society regarding building an efficient electric vehicle. At the time there was no reasonably priced DC motor with descent efficiency so Lynch decided to build his own utilizing modifying existing motors with old tin cans that he would spread out flat to use as cooling fins. Surprisingly using rudimentary materials and a garage work bench, Cedric was making better more efficient electric motors than any of the universities were able to manufacture in state of the art workshops. Cedric then came up with a motor design that could be cheaply manufactured and began manufacturing his own motor that he could sell to the public in 1988 and the Lynch Electric Motor Company was born, known as LEMCO. Cedric first used his motor to create a small boat called “The Spark” that would set an electric boat efficiency record. From there Cedric turned his attention to bicycles, an application generally considered too small for a lynch motor at that time. Cedric mounted his motor in recumbent bike, allowing him space to eventually use a set of thundersky lithium batteries. The resulting aerodynamic recumbent bike had a top speed of 60mph and still managed an incredible range of 150 miles. Cedric rode his recumbent creation everywhere as a daily commuter, putting an amazing 50,000 miles on the machine - technically a motorbike. Briggs and Stratton, the US firm famous for lawn mower engines, bought the technology and used it in their E-Tech Motor, and Cedric went on to manufacture his latest incarnation of his lynch design into the Agni motor, which is used in go karts, sailboats, motor boats, and even small airplanes. The Lynch designed motors all have the same traits. Brushed motors, around 25 pounds in weight and they are able to put out enormous power compared to their weight. Sometimes as high as 50 hp (depending on amperage ran through the motor) at an incredible 98% efficiency. Lynch Motors are also the most often used motors in electric motorcycle racing applications. Cedric's zero-emission motorcycle, which has a top speed of 120mph, was shown in action winning the world’s first zero carbon race - the TTxGP in the Isle of Mann. The idea for the electric motor has been snapped up by the 56-year-old’’s friend Arvind Rabadia, who together with his brother Hasmuk Rabadia had been thinking of starting a business in India. They have now set up Agni Motors to make further-improved versions of Cedric’s motors Despite Cedric’s breakthrough invention he has no formal engineering qualifications and taught himself the techniques needed to construct his engine. He first became interested in electrics when his parents bought him a book entitled How to build things from things found at home. The Etek motor is a brushed 25-pound pancake shaped motor that puts out enormous power for its weight. Depending on amperage and voltage the Etek can easily provide between 15-horsepower and 30-horsepower reliably and consistently (11-kW / 22-kW). A perfect platform for a powerful electric bike if you do not mind the weight. Although brushless motors are considered more modern, a brushed motor like the Etek allows the builder to use very affordable controllers. Cedric-Lynch invented the motor and sold it to Briggs and Stratton which US company produced the Etek at a lower price (around $600). In the late 90’s early 2000’s it was the way to go for a high-power / light-weight electric vehicle. Many small E-vehicle records were set using the Etek motor. Finally, the market had a relatively lightweight and powerful electric motor available to the masses. In essence, the Etek allowed hot rodders to build electric bikes. Before the Etek very few people had ever achieved 50mph on an electric bike. Even today, Etek motors (and newer incarnations of the Etek motor) are used to make some super fast electric bikes. In the case of Liveforphysics, the fastest E-bikes ever. Liveforphysics used a newer version of the Etek (the Agni motor), to achieve speeds of over 70mph, and dominate a recent hill-climb event. Every Etek I have ever ridden has been characterized by brutal off-the-line acceleration, usually to a point where you have to apply the throttle very carefully or get thrown off. However, it is possible to run an Etek at a lower voltage or lower amperage and have a very manageable, safe, and sane electric bike that will not burn out on you, no matter high steep the incline.

You can mention about CZinger 21C car. It has a generator attached to the rear-mounted internal combustion engine, and 2 electric motors in the front powered directly from this generator (it has 2 super-capacitors as a buffer). So effectively it has copper shaft that does not even spin.

Old Fisher & Paykel ecodrive washing machines are amongst the best. Company in new Zealand makes wind turbines using those exact motors. I got one in parts in my shed, AMAZING amount of magnets and coils. Generally the electronics fail in them and the motor is fine. I got mine off the roadside.

Doesn't a dishwasher motor work well? How about teaching everyone how to turn a small 4 stroke engine into a steam powered engine, using a water heater fired by wood, turning an automotive alternator, with a 12 V battery/120 V inverter? It can be done, not very efficiently and not at high pressure, but it will work. It could be one of the few options we have in some circumstances. Steam power is incredible, still used today in nuke plants, submarines, 3 stage super steam turbines.

I'm the type of person that generally says to do everything that anyone tells you not to try at home, but even I recommend not playing with steam power unless you've done loads of reasearch and are a very highly skilled individual. Highly pressurized gasses or vapors in homebrew pressure vessels is a fantastic was to get a closed casket funeral.

I think there is things to discuss in the video. First of all I think there is different point of views regarding what is "the best" off the shelf generator. Sure if you look on just the motor alone, then a stepper is pretty efficient as a generator. and a brushed DC might not seem that inefficient all alone. But its kind of half truths, because what people usually want in the end is DC voltage, and coversion to DC is also not lossless, with a three phase motor you need just six diodes compared to a stepper motors where two full bridge rectifiers is needed (8 diodes). There is also the question of off the shelf compatability, most wind energy systems are three phased, so if you want to make your own wind turbine and want it hooked up to anything serious, then three phase is the way to go. I love steppers in those kind of small scale garden projects however, as they are just so easy to deal with on a hobby scale. Also your brushed DC alone might be 75% efficient, but then add the losses of the planetary gear needed for it to produce the 20.000rpm or so needed to have a useful voltage. If what you want in a generator is one that generates a useful power at low RPM / high torque situations, I would measure the breaking torque of the motor when it is shorted and take the one with higher breaking torque. I absolutely agree on your conclusion however, just nitpicking really.

After seeing the walking wheel, here is an idea for one source of multiple motors worldwide. Hook up generators to gym equipment. As they workout they generate electricity. They could deduct a certain percentage off their monthly bill from electricity produced. This would encourage workouts that may surpass the amount of solar electricity produced at midnight in any tropical area.🤪

Technically, power plants doesn't use permanent magnets at all. They're using electromagnets as a rotors. There're two types of constructions to transmit energy into such rotor. First -- just using a collector on the shaft and second -- using a rotating transformer or another generator on same shaft, that inverted in terms rotor/stator so you just energize stator and rotor would be generating and supplying first rotor's winding.

With smaller motors, one could make an array to build up the current or voltage. There's efficiency loss in array electronics. With the bigger hoverboard motors, gearing could convert force and rpm. I guess you'd need some kind of transmission system. Some efficiency loss there. Both may be viable, based on spec requirements, size, mats, cost, complexity, portability, etc..

A brushless motor is a lot more efficient and a stepper motor is cheap easy and almost as efficient, so the best choice would be probably a stepper motor. When it gets really interesting are linear actuators, you could use a speaker as the generator then, but I have never done that and I would like to know if that works well.

But Rob, the 500 RPM is for 36 volts. How many volts do you require? If you devide by 4, you are going to end up with roughly 12 volts for 125 RPM.

Divide by 3. 12 is 1/3rd of 36. The RPM needed for a "Precise 12V" is 166.667 RPM. To charge a battery, we really need closer to 15, so I'd run it at roughly 190-200. Too tired to do the maff to make it more precise atm.

I just got a 7.2 KW industrial permanent magnet servo motor for $30 !!!! It apparently outputs three-phase AC when spun! Now it would be simple enough to put a 3-phase rectifier on there, combined with some kind of buck/boost converter for voltage regulation maybe a grid tie inverter or battery charge controller Ideally though I would love to use it as a motor for some kind of vehicle, one with regenerative braking. The problem is it has two connectors, one is an 8 pin and one is a 4 pin and other than the three pins that put out the ac voltage when spin it, I have no idea what the other pins are for!! Neither do I have any idea exactly what kind of motor this is! *_How do I find out ?!?!‽_*

Hi Rob. If you make the hoverboard wheel roll on the floor at the same speed as you did, 2 steps/sec , I suspect it will produce about the same power. The mechanical advantage produced by the big wheel is the thickness of the board between your shoes against the inside diameter and the outside diameter of the hamster wheel. For 1 rotation, you need to walk 6,063m inside intead of 6,1m outside. The torque is not 82kg at 0.97m= 780Nm, the torque arm lenght is only 1/2 step, about 0,43m x 804.42N= 346Nm to 0Nm when your foot arrives down until the next step. I saw you did 7 steps/rotation 346/2/7=24.7 Nm/rotation 120rpm=12,56rad/sec and that times torque = 310W not counting loses (I must be wrong, it seems too much.) Maybe the loss during intersteps or the aproximation 346/2 for 346Nm to 0Nm? 346/4 would be better to also represent 0Nm to 346Nm when the foot is applied the torque is not immediately maximum, and it would be 155w 12,35Nm You where walking at 12,2km/h Nice performance. :-) Cheers.

Well that is what I'm attempting. The alternator I have puts out 12V 145 Amps at 3500 rpm. This is a stock Toyota Tercel alternator. It is my attempt/ intent to charge my E-bike, while driving, using the alternator. And Rob has helped a lot in this endevour. I can't say that Rob has ever attempted this, but I'm sure learning a lot. I just need to figure out the electronics at this point. My E-bike operates at, on a full charge, is 84V 10 amps. Any input to assist me would be greatly appreciated.

It would be so great to work out in your home, and use that energy! Maybe with a computer that measures rpm's, calories, watts, and then you could track how much money you saved? I have a bicycle fitness stand and often thought it would be cool to stick an alternator or radial flux motor to it, and a battery. I'm not skilled enough to deal with charge controllers and inverters.

Excellent video and well explained- But I had a "Hang on" thought- is there any way to contain the magnetic field produced by the coils (and thus the counter torque) within an armature, like with one of those "On/off" magnets? That seems like it should be possible somehow.

You can do it with a toroid. But you have to connect the magnetic field around the toroid correctly for the coil to produce significant power. But note that this will not remove all the counter torque. It will only limit the counter torque that is produced by the interaction of the rotor and coil magnetic field. But the counter torque produced by the the electrons won't be affected by much if any at all. This electron counter torque is due to the moving electrons experiencing a force by the surrounding magnetic field. Nevertheless I believe it have the potential to build a self running generator.

I mean, we know that containing magnetic flux in a simple metal armature is doable- both in the switchable magnets and, say, a transformer. It just seems like surely you could use that sort of concept to at least cut way down on the back emf and reduce if not eliminate the torque necessary for generation. of course if that Was possible somebody probably would have thought of that by now.

In the case of many motors, like the hoverboard motor, the counter torque (aka cogging) comes from the iron inside the coils. It helps the magnetic field, but severely hurts the drag.

What if,. Instead of using alot of magnets are mounted eccentrically on the shaft, and the windings are on iron bars that reach to the center aligning with the magnets forming a loop from the shaft. Up through the core and back to the shaft with something like two 25 mm cubes, or cylinders, possibly a pair of 50x50x20mm N52 magnets, (or whatever the strongest new magnets are called!!). Or use 4-6 magnet's, two in a gear sperating like a planetary with the U shaped iron , the u facing the rotor, with the gears passing inside at the tips , on the edge of the gears the gears having a trapezoidal iron chunk on it on both sides. The shaft causing the gears to spin around the shaft alternating the poles comming within .030" of the iron U's with the tips shaped and spaced to catch the alternating poles of the gears. Using iron over lots of individual , expensive magnets. and possibly spinning similar bars attached to the shaft. With the saddle of the u being stationary. With a coil windding on it. Ane the shaft having a large ring magnet, around the shaft. Or multiple smaller magnets forming alternating poles. This equals large bar magnets passing the coils as the shaft spins. The use of old transformer cores is possible. Snd only a few expensive magnets are required!

Actually all induction motors can be generators. You just need enough capacitors.

They do but working as generators or motors is to do with the slip speed ratio - the ratio between the shaft rotation speed and the synchronous magnetic field speed - less than 1 and it's a motor - more than 1 and it is a generator

@@townbell2248ok got it mate - that's in the gearing - get a small motor some lego gears and you are away - the faster you turn it the higher the voltage but it gets harder to turn - i did do a video on the relationship of gears to torque and speed

the PROBLEM has been pointed out to me by an official incounty council i ssurjest to him if i was to bolt an RSJ to the end wall of my house to get the M/C abouve the pitch line of the roof i would run into trouble with the planning department The bassis of this converdation was the ease of obtaining roof generating setuppsand i pointed out the switch gear involved is the difecult part to install then it turned to wind turbines and how you erect them .imshure you have hit on this prob before please say something on this subject ttfn&ty

Can someone explain what synchronous generator does, in moments when he gets connected to the grid (synchronisation) in order to be generator, not a motor? Is voltage higher than the grid, amperage? Because if we remove steam turbine it will become motor at same RPM.. Confusing.

I keep watching these hoping to learn how to actually build a wind turbine, but he makes it seem much easier than it rly is. I don't understand how you say a motor, and a generator are identical? If they were Identical, I could simply spin a motor with my hand, and get voltage out. This is not the case though. You have to change the wiring...somehow..I dunno, I get confused every video..sigh Thank you for trying though! :)

I ran across a short or whatever these things are that the guy had made a nine pole electric generator and it supposedly massively reduced the amount of power needed to turn it to get the electricity I would have saved it but my phone died on me right about the end and it disappeared I don't know how to find it

I'll base this on VAWT and your walking wheel direct contact. VAWT with a nice base plate like your walking wheel. A specified wind will turn at a force for a specified motor, but as the wind picks up you get more speed or force. The wind id the same, below the base plate or to the side. I could use that wind to catch enough force to apply a second motor when the wind increased enough to take the load and disengage when the wind slowed, prolly just with a spring and a wind catch. Just a thought.

Well that is what I'm attempting. The alternator I have puts out 12V 145 Amps at 3500 rpm. This is a stock Toyota Tercel alternator. It is my attempt/ intent to charge my E-bike, while driving, using the alternator. And Rob has helped a lot in this endevour. I can't say that Rob has ever attempted this, but I'm sure learning a lot. I just need to figure out the electronics at this point. My E-bike operates at, on a full charge, is 84V 10 amps. Any input to assist me would be greatly appreciated.

Use a 12v power inverter to use your normal bike charger.

@@MHLivestreams Thanks. So I can't just use the DC that comes out of the regulated alternator, which is determined at the output of my existing charger due? Is that what the 12V power inverter does?

@@robinhooper7702 an inverter changes DC to AC, it's simple enough. They're quite cheap really.

@MHLivestreams Ah, I think I get it now. I just plug the alternator into the inverter, and then the inverter is plugged into my existing AC to DC charger to charge the battery pack. That sounds too simple. Much gratitude, dude.
