The Grandfather of my wife lived in the mountain in the Bradford, PA. In the 40 through the 70's he killed deer every year with a .22 Hornet. In the mid-80's he moved up to the .222 Remington. While I was dating his granddaughter I asked him if he considered using the .243 Winchester. He said, "No, that's too much gun". I grew up in the woods of Beaver County PA where the .30-30, WCF, .32 Winchester Special, .and the .38-55 Winchester were commonplace in the woods. Most used the .30-06 and I was taught the .243 is too small for whitetail. My, how things have changed. Loved this vlog, it's obvious you prepared well and your presentation is excellent.

In Mexico mid to late 90s, my dad would take his 22lr and go into the woods, early morning during weekends, he'd come back late that evening with everything from turtle doves, to chachalacas, iguanas, rabbits and the occasional deer, the man didn't even owned camouflage only a green and brown flannel shirt, jeans and work boots. He saved for months and bought a second 22lr, then started letting me tag along when I was 10, we weren't as successful when I was going too (I know exactly why), But we still managed to get plenty to eat for the family. Good times.

Question... why is the industry standard dictate the velocity and energy at the muzzle as well as velocity with 24" barrels if in practice that cant be applied to a real life scenario....how difficult can it be to just give the correct factual information, we will still buy the ammo no matter if velocity drops on the advertisement on the ammo boxes... at least its honest

Being aware of what a cartridge will do out of a shorter barrel typical of AR15s is also important. Selecting a powder which will achieve better velocities in shorter barrels is helpful. Federal makes an MSR version of their fusion ammo tailored specifically to this.

Your intro caveat, "check the regulations where you plan to hunt" is the number one thing. Winchester makes a 64 grain powerpoint 223 loading which should do well, did great on a coyote. I have 70 gr TSX in 5.56x45 which I am hoping to try on deer, it also has worked well on coyote and bobcat. Cartridges don't kill game...bullets kill game. The 30-'06 isn't enough for deer...if you shoot the old 55gr saboted varmint bullets or the 110gr 30 carbine bullet. The 223 is capable of pushing bullets that will reliably kill deer, if placed well. Other cartrdiges are a far better choice, frankly. I don't drive in 16-penny framing nails with a tack hammer, either.

A long time ago I sided with my dad on a deer bullet had to have a bit of heft to penetrate & knock 'em down. Now I'm looking at the damage that a bullet can do when put in the right spot. Any cartridge that it's bullet put in vital organs ( understand brain, spine, lungs & heart area) will cause traumatic 'system s failure' in a game animal. With speed that causes hydrostatic shock a bullet does the damage. The problem is does it cause enough. The average wound channel is smaller than, say a 30-06 bullet simply because of size & mass. Since every shot on a game animal is different more damage has more forgiveness in doing enough in the right area. Yes a quartering shot needs more depth of the wound channel than a broad side lung shot. And other things can happen at the shot as any experienced hunter knows. So yes, you can hunt with a 223 Remington but know its limitations on the needed damage to vitals to make humane kills. I may be hunting with my AR this year on some hunts so I will try it out. My hand load has a 65 gr Sierra Game King.

Wasn't Colt selling ARs commercially under license from Armalite for a few years before the M16 was adopted by the military? Pretty sure the military rejected the original AR until they reconsidered after it was sold to the public. The AR format was converted to full auto as the M16 for the military.

One of my 1st videos on my channel here was about .223 deer loads, and my personal experiences. At the time of the(crappy) video I had taken 98 deer with .223 in an AR-15 carbine, all one shot drops. Since then I don't know how many I have taken(I stopped counting at 150) at ranges up to 500yds, all 1 shot drops, 99+% DRT drops. I can count on one hand how many have ran, with the farthest making it 40yds, and that was just because it was a REALLY BAD shot on my part on about a piddly 150yd shot. I own that one. Bullet selection is key, and also really important on shot placement. When I say 115, 120, 150lb those are dress weights, not weight on the hoof whole. I know I've passed the 200 mark with my cheap little Ruger AR556 carbine, just not sure how many over 200 I have taken as I usually take(before I broke my neck)15-25 deer per year. But I got the little AR during the Obama shortage, and couldn't get a bolt action(wanted another .243), so thought "I'll hunt with it this season, and I'll have a bolt gun before next." 1st day out had 3 DRTs in 15min before leaving the house. 2 the next morning. 2 the next morning after. 15 total for the week, so thought "why do I want to waste $ on buying another rifle just for deer???", and the rest is history.

Just stop comparing energy. It means absolutely nothing in regards to terminal ballistics.
@pb7087
@pb7087 13 күн бұрын
@MrGT3 It doesn’t mean nothing. It is 100% necessary, as wounding mechanisms rely on TRANSFERRING that energy. Either through crush damage as the bullet travels through, fragmentation lacerations, or making a temporary stretch cavity so big that it exceeds the tissue’s elastic limit. Other factors include the bullet construction, meplat, and sectional density. So no, external ballistics energy is not the only thing to consider, but it is a critical factor along with the other things mentioned above. If you don’t have enough energy in the bullet, then you may not be able to penetrate deep enough or create as much tissue damage through means other than crush damage. You don’t always need maximum energy, but you do still need to make sure you have enough energy to be able to have that bullet effectively transfer it to the tissue.

"I think energy helps with power comparisons" Power is a function of work, which is itself a function of force (mass x acceleration) kinetic energy (.5 mass × velocity²) has no bearing on power, and no reputable expert in terminal ballistics would claim it has any effect on wounding, its simply a value of potential entropy it could transfer to other things, ammunition companies posting this metric is absurd, and people using it for anything is even more absurd.

Great subject! Spicey! Thankyou for bringing this up! The reason most states did a ban on .22 cal. Is because .22 lr and .22 mag were very popular for taking deer out of season. I find coppers to be overrated especially in 22 for large animals. Folks have the idea that they need something that will pass through the animal lengthwise, but don't consider how narrow the wound is. All that is needed to pass through a broadside deer is 10" on a large deer. Leadcores offer much wider wounding, and depending on bullet, still likely to exit on a broadside shot.

@Nick-sx6jm if the animal wasn't recovered, there would be no evidence to identify what actually happened. Honestly seeing the bears I have taken with most of them being with systems popularly labelled as very insufficient, and the testing ive done with monos, I would more likely believe that shot placement wasn't the best in the case you described. While they don't perform near as well terminally as lead core bullets, they still do work if placed through the lungs.

It's not as effective at a clean kill on those larger deer. And I don't know about you, but I'm not that interested in spending hours tracking a wounded deer. That's not a clean kill and not a humane way to take game.

yes, to 100m with a short barrel, 150m with 20" barrel, using Nosler Partition 60 gr softpoints and taking shots only from the front, front quarters or from the side and not near dusk. You might not get an exit wound, so there might not be any blood trail. So it's best if you have snow on the ground, or you're up in a tree blind,, where you can see the animal fall. It probably wont make it 100m, if you get a good chest hit.

don't use match hps, nor varmint- weight softpoints, on deer, guys. That's just stupid. You need expansion of the bullet AND 10" of penetration.

Hey Guy, Off the topic - I was wondering if I can stabilize a bullet with sheer speed? I have an older Ruger m77 in 243 with a 1 in 9" twist. I've shot everything that used to be available with 100 grain and down with good success but 6mm bullets range up to 115 gr. I would like to try handloading with these bullets to take advantage of their high bc to buck the wind better and carry more energy farther down range. My question is this: if it appears I will not be able to stabilize the 115 Bergers due to barrel twist rate could I, in theory, ,"catch up" with greater velocity? Thank you
@64samsky
@64samsky 14 күн бұрын
I'm a handloader, 115 is too heavy for your barrel twist. Some of the people are re- barreling to faster twists to throw heavier pills, but most older guns don't have the proper twist rate.
@NorthRiverGuide
@NorthRiverGuide 13 күн бұрын
I've tried that with a long barreled deep throated 243 with 105gr bthp. I got them to go 3150fps and they had decent accuracy when air density was low in the summer (moa at 800), but accuracy fell apart and turned to 15moa in the winter when the air was more dense. The longer 115gr low drag bullet is a bit much to ask out of that barrel
@guyminer2384
@guyminer2384 13 күн бұрын
Check the stability calculator on Berger's website. Doesn't look good for your barrel and that bullet. Marginal stability.

Interesting video. I happen to be in the market for my one and only centerfire rifle that I’m going to own for a while and I find it hard to decide on chambering. The 22 ARC sounds great but not sure if it’s going to die off and cannot be counted on in the future, what would a good twist rate and barrel length be to shoot 50 grain bullets on up 80?

Projectile selection, shot placement, and impact energy/ velocity are critical for being effective, quick, and clean with 223 on medium game. Appropriate range is 200yrds or less(more closer, more better) even with a precision ar with appropriate bullet selection. Long as you use an ounce of common sense, it'll get it done

40 of the 50 states allow it. 7 of the 10 that ban it did so via banning bottle necked rifle cartridges, or are shotgun only. Only 3 of the 50 states require a bullet diameter larger than .224 (which is the actual bullet diameter of the .223 Remington, 22-250 etc. oddly enough.)

Why not? Unfamiliar with landscape in general but when I used to go up to Cold Lake Canada for Maple Flag exercises (military thing) it was mainly woodland meaning 150 yards or less shots. Well within the ethical lethal range of the .223 even for an average shooter to get a chest cavity shot. Neck/head shot not out of the realm of an established shooter.

Also there is variation in deer size by geography / climate. As you go up north and get colder, the deer get bigger. Better bullet tech has improved expansion and efficacy.
