The groups were great! Whoever built these rifles must know what he is doing. After a lot of work and the help of other 224V reloaders, the ticket in my 22" 1:7 is 80eld, 0.035" from the lands, with 25gr of H4895, 0.39 moa at 2928fps, single digits SD, using once fired Federal brass. I expect even better on my next load using Starline brass and a mandrel expander. You should try this combination. There is even a company making it commercially now.

@@Ultimatereloader I wrote too fast, it's 1.5 lbs, which is pretty adequate and it is the one in the link. What I really like on this trigger, besides the light pull, is the multiple adjustments on the shoe. I have long hands and the ability to tilt the shoe puts my hand on the same position every time, which is great when changing position in PRS. I also did not list that I use a SJC Titan compensator, which cuts the recoil and keep me on target.

If you are looking for an expander die and mandrel you should look up "21st Century Shooting" and see what they have to offer. Not saying it's better than the Sinclaire, you just might want to compare the two and see which one you like better. They also have a bunch of other sweet looking reloading equipment available. Also be careful not to go too light on a semi-auto trigger or you will start getting double fires from the recoil resetting the trigger. It happened to a friend of mine on his AR10 one time and the trigger wasn't even that light on it.

Hi Gavin, as always great info I am hoping that the 224 Valkyrie will be my next purchase or build as well. I guess now you can maybe also start with experimentation of bullet seating depth, neck turning, flash hole deburring, and more case prep along with sorting etc. primers, & powder I believe if you are already getting a .30 MOA (1/3rd of an inch) at 600 yards that is awesome already and at 600 yards plus shooting like maybe Prairie Dogs now you will face a real challenge. Again thank you

Got your link from West Desert shooter. Glad to see your succes. I load 26.0 gr of CFE223 to avoid being compressed & seat the 88 ELD bullet at 2.25 COL. Brass is S&B 6.8SPC FL sized. I have taken it to 1k yds but it was a windy day (15-20mph gusting) from the right about 75 degrees so although 19/21 shots landed on a F class 600 yd paper target my best group was about 7 inches for 3 shots. Wind call for me is a bugger. Rifle is a AR with 1:7 twist criterion from Craddock precision. Load development was a pain. Fortunately others on you tube have helped out. Take it to 1k when you get a chance. I really wanted to use this as a PRS gun but have now moved to a 6mm creedmoor AR10.Thanks for your work. Nice drone video. I'll keep watching.

I was just playing with the berger bullets twist stabilization calculator, and it is saying,( and I had to guess at bullet length) that you should only see a 9 % loss of stabilization. Which basically changes the BC from the .600 to .546. so I think past 800 to 1000 you will probably start noticing larger groups. It will more than likely go subsonic earlier. But can't wait to see you results.

I did some playing with the numbers and a 1 in 5 is the best for this bullet. Not the 1 in 6.5 that sierra claims. the 1 in 6 is the slowest twist that stabilizes it fully if you can push it to 1650 fps.

Excellent Gavin! I'm using 23.4gr varget behind the 88eld in Starline brass and I'm seating these to 2.270" overall. It's on the mild side but gives a velocity of 2650ish from a 22" Bartlein AR barrel. Groups are around .6 moa at 100 and it has maintained that when I'm on my game to 800 and by 1000 I'm usually just under moa.

Thanks for sharing that Niles- that sounds like a really good result- Hornady advertises 2675 FPS for their 88 grain ELD-M 224 Valkyrie factory ammunition, and from a 24" barrel. So it sounds to me like you are at an equivalent load level. I was thinking that Varget might be a touch fast for 88 grain bullet, but perhaps based on what you've shared I'll look into trying it out with the 88 grain ELD-M bullets.

@@Ultimatereloader I'd be real interested to see what kind of velocity you can get from the 95smk loaded near the lands till you hit pressure signs... I'm toying with the idea of having a custom reamer made that would allow the 95's to be seated 2.5" in a bolt action while leaving more space for powder.

I'm late to reply to this video. But here it goes. I have built an AR upper in 224 Valkyrie. I have a 22" SS heavy barrel. The chambering is from a builder that told me that the SAMI specs are wrong, it has a 1 in 7 twist. I'm using an existing lower with a very good 3lb trigger. I have shot all of the existing factory loads and got the tightest groups with the 87gr ballistic-tipped Hornady rounds. .30 at 100yds. This rifle will hold its own with any bolt gun that I have heard of or seen. I shoot on a friend's ranch in Weld County, Colorado where the range goes out to 1375 yards. He has a 24" X 36" steel at that range. Both of us can consistently get small groups at the 1375 range. I'm told that this setup is the only AR that has done this. He's in the process of having a bolt gun built using the same chambering. I don't know if it will be better than my gun. I'm going hunting some more. I've taken coyotes at 400 yards. I could shoot them at further distances but I want to be sure of an instant kill. Well, I hope you see this and reply.

Enjoy your channel very much. You are my favorite machinist. Question... Have you ever had a situation where your progressive reloader has failed to load powder into the shell leaving you with a bullet stuck in the barrel at the range? Happened to me twice, each a different caliber. Seriously thinking of going back to a single stage reloaded where I can see each round at every stage of the process.

Good shooting, especially with that AR, but you don't have to have that play which you noted is in your rifle. As a competitive shooter I've been working on this problem with my A2 rifle for several years now. Of course you have the play between the upper and lower receivers and in the but stock as well, even in a solid A2 butt stock can be some play which for me was that the buffer tube kept loosening up, so I finally locktighted it, and it has lasted for about a thousand rounds now. The Accu wedge helps but doesn't completely solve the problem between the recievers. The next thing I did was use a feeler guage to check just how much play was between the 2 receivers," .005" I then cut shims to fit over the connecting lugs to eliminate this play from some shim stock and super glue them in place. There was also some side play on the forward assembly pin which I eliminated with a small piece of shim stock. I left the Accu wedge in the receiver because it's not doing any harm, though I doubt it's helping me either. I've only been shooting local matches, but I loose very few of them, and then only because I screwed something up and it wasn't the rifle! This rifle is a 5.56, 1-9, 20" heavy profile Delton upper, on an Olympic lower, I'll go to a 1-7 twist when my barrel which has at least 5,000 rds through it now quits performing.

I have a converted Savage 10 bolt gun with Krieger 22” barrel 1-6.5 twist spun up by Mile High. I seriously want to build a gas gun upper and see what the difference in brass abuse is. I think a lot of people poo pooing the valk are using guns that are out of spec, and over gassed, causing the brass to get abused harder and wear out faster. I have 3 loading on most of my Starline brass, 4 on the federal (3 reloads), and 2 firings on the Hornady and none of my primer pockets are loose. I’m using RL17 pushing the 88’s to just under 2750 FPS. I’m going to try H4895 and see if I can get close to the same velocity if not the next higher node with less pressures. I want to try the 80’s, but cannot find them in stock anywhere. Same with the 95’s. Right now the gun shoots better than I do. I’d love to see what it can do in the hands of someone who knows what they are really doing at range. 1st time shooting it at 1,000 in fairly stout Colorado winds without a spotter I hit about 50% on an 18” plate. Hits and misses are easy to see, this caliber barely moves the gun.

It's interesting that you're getting such good results, given the abundance of reports of less-than-expected accuracy. It sounds like you've built fine rifles, and given the comments below regarding the variability of chambers, that is certainly a factor. As far as the utility of the 224V over the 223, though, that would seem to lie in the heavier bullet weights that the 224V. I can't wait to see if you are able to get your rifles to perform there, or if the magic really is in the faster twist barrel. By the way, have you considered whether you could rig a paint sprayer to your drone? It would save a lot of mountain climbing!

Hi Gavin, somehow I missed this video in you series. I'm wondering, I know you have put so much effort into muzzle devices and noticed it appears you do not use anything on these two rifles while shooting? can you say the reasons? or was it just something that happened so nothing behind it. I know you are very scientific with you tests and reasons so again just wondering if I missed anything. As always thanks for sharing all your knowledge and efforts with everyone as you have been a great help in many situations.

Btw a lot of people have been having luck with H4895 and Hornady 80gr ELD-m at 3000fps. I shot a .75" group with it yesterday at 2915fps at 100 yards. My best load for close in accuracy though is 26.5gr of CFE223 with 60gr VMax bullets. 0.5"@100 yards all day and I got 2nd in a 100 yard match with that load last weekend.

i dont see any reciect .224 Valkrie shooting ,i bought a CMMG put a Vortex 10 to 24 x50 bought som e factory ammo went out to the range and was getting 3/4 in. groups with all the ammo this was last year 2021 then i got covid jan 2022 was in hospital 3 weeks ,still recouperating havent been able to get back out yet ,but i bought a Dillon 550 and want to do some reloading. Very impressed with the caliber,looking for a bolt action ,savage ,and a few advertised the had guns but every one i tryed to get said " not availabe" i cant afford a custom one ,i am retired on fixed income. I am very impressed with my CMMG ,but would like to experiment with a bolt action ,do you know of any on the market? ilooked at all the earlyer videos from 2018 and 2019 and saw the any problems with the 224 was factory ammo. i saw thru all that and did my own comparisons and realised what a great caliber it is ,i hope shooters get passed all the bull and it takes off . Not inpressed with 6.5 Creedmore ,ill stick with .308 ,not mention 1000 round barrel life with the Creedmore ,i dont so. that you for all the great info you provide.

Would like to see a video comparing .224 valkerie to 6.5 grendel for an ar 15 it would be a hand built rifle and I can reload once I have the dies just want to see pros and cons for each for precision long range shooting I currently shoot out to 800 but would like to be able to go farther
@PC-vq5ud
@PC-vq5ud 5 жыл бұрын
My less than professional opinion, from the videos I've seen, the Grendal is a 600 meter round out of the AR. 140 gr loads seem to only get about 2400 fps. Don't think they will stay supersonic to 1000. 120 and 130 gr bullets start faster but you loose the high BC advantage. Hope the author answers too, I would like to see his thoughts.

@@PC-vq5ud, if that's what you think, then Scott at Specialized Dynamics is doing it wrong... In a competition in Utah, he was the only competitor to hit a target at 1215yds with his 6.5Grendel. If you want a super-accurate AR in 6.5Grendel, speak to Specialized Dynamics. Their AR's are boringly super-accurate at 600yds. We started looking for smaller and smaller targets to hit, just for fun & to challenge ourselves (600yds was the max range available that day.) The cartridge is really NOT designed for bullets heavier than 123grn.

Chad and I have spoken about the Valkyrie quite a bit. I have noticed the same thing about brass life that he mentions in the video. I get maybe two loads out of the federal brass, depending on how hot the load is, before the primer pickets go to crap. The feebore of the chamber makes a huge difference on the accuracy of the rifle for this cartridge. I have a CMMG barrel and it will not shoot. What it boils down to is the chamber being cut correctly. If its not then there is little that can be done to make the rifle accurate regardless of twist rate of the barrel.

So basically the .224 val is just a long range paper puncher that has less barrel life than a .223 and the only advantage over the .223 is that it fires a bullet that's 11 to 17 grains heavier than a 77 grain bullet... I guess long term exposure to lead vapors can really slow someone's innovation in cartridge development.
