Some additional data points... I contacted JP Enterprises and they will be using +2" gas systems on their 20" & 22" barrels. When asked about velocity expectations with the 90 grain federal matchking they advised we should see around 2650 with the 20" and 2700 with the 22". Yes you will need a 6.8spc bolt (comes with JP Barrels) Yes you will need 6.8 magazines and yes the parent case is a 6.8 spc.

Interesting looking cartridge. As a handloader myself I like the way you go into detail about stuff so please, keep doing it, it's not boring to me and I'm sure other's find it interesting as well. If they can get a 100gr bullet in the .224 Val it should be a decent enough deer round on par with the .243 Win but with the higher B.C. of the heavy/long for caliber .224" bullet. I'll be watching to see how this cartridge works out. Hopefully it'll not be another dud like the 22 Nosler. Anyway, lovin' the channel, keep on keepin' on pard and I'll catch ya' later.

I’ve had a few tell me I need to buy a Valkyrie as well. Not likely soon. I did see a guy neck Grendel down to 22 cal and shoot 80 Gr. ELDs at 3000 FPS from an AR which is pretty damn awesome!

Over at 6mmAR.com, they make barrels in the .224AR cartridge. Says 36 grains of water for the case. Thats on a 6.5 Grendel case. Might be the one your talking about.

Great first look at this cartridge, Excellent work JRB. Really happy to see that it doesn’t have a rebated rim like the .22 Nosler, hopefully the brass will be more durable. A magazine fed 90 grain bullet with a high BC will be awesome. Keep up the great work.

Once the original excitement ran through my system and my brain began working correctly again....my take on .224V is that there is really no point in messing with it unless you shoot 600+yards. Of course, there being no point doesn’t meant you can’t play with it just for shits and gigs!

Well, that's because the .224 Valkrie on paper sounds awesome! And people want to know if it lives up to the hype. Or if it's a flop like the .22 Nosler (that's my personal opinion) also that neck length. :D P.S. I have weighed a lot of 5.56 LC brass and noted it varies as widely as 5-6 grains over 100 pieces over a few years of different brass. I only mention that as a note curious how the other brass's may stack up in consistency (or lack there of) Also I agree on the twist, if there's already a real possibility of a 100gr .224 bullet for this cartridge, I'd think the bullet would be long enough you might NEED that 1:7 twist to ensure it's stable. *shrug* time will tell, good video, thanks for posting it.

Compass Lake Engineering and Odin Works both told me that if I’m a reloader definitely pass up the 22 Nos and wait for the 224 Valkyrie. Also the .564 BC on the 90 gr SMK is just the shit. I’ve had good luck with Federal Brass and gas guns in the past.
@Taluvian6 жыл бұрын
Still think the sweet spot is the 6mm 110 gr SMK with .617 BC. I would like to see someone try that with this brass.
@petersouthernboy63276 жыл бұрын
Taluvian - that particular SMK bullet you mention is the shit in 6mm Creedmoor with a BC of .617. IMO it would displace too much powder capacity in the 6.8 SPC case to make the Vo trade-off worthwhile in the small frame AR-15. I think it would act more like a 6 HAGAR or 6 AR Turbo - which the Valkyrie beats.

Excellent video. I subscribed! I am going all in on this. I have a new upper and handguard, I just need the barrel and bolt, which I have ordered. You know, you have all the comments from guys considering this new cartridge for hunting, and targeting shooting, but one arena I think this is going to be a popular round is the PRS Gas Gun Tac Light division. Shooters are limited to a .224 caliber round, and this supposedly will shoot much flatter and further compared to even the .22 Nosler.

@johnny'sreloadingbench - If a Datum line dimension for a cartridge is not available from the usual sources, take a measurement at the top of the case body at the bottom of the shoulder, then measure the diameter of the neck (unfired/resized case). Add the two numbers together and divide by 2. That is your Datum line measurement and the correct size headspace gauge.
@calling4life6 жыл бұрын
Alliant Techsystems (ATK) was the parent company of Federal Cartridge, it has now split into Vista outdoor Inc and something else (this other one does the defense and aerospace stuff). Under Vista you find, Federal Cartridge, CCI, American Eagle, Savage Arms, Bushnell, Weaver, Simmons, Millett, Tasco, RCBS, Primos, and your Alliant Powder just to name a few. So don't be surprised when you see all these 224 Valkyrie reviews and the guys are running the Savage MSR 15 with a Bushnell scope on top, federal ammunition, coincidentally running Alliant powder. Not always, but you get the gist
@petersouthernboy63276 жыл бұрын
calling4life - I don’t see that as a negative at all. It takes deep pockets like ATK to successfully launch and maintain a new cartridge. Where would the 6.5 Creedmoor be without Hornady .
@calling4life6 жыл бұрын
I don't consider it a negative either, as an aside, somebody please tell Sierra to make a 90gr tipped matchking for this, it'd make a killer coyote combo.
@shanerhodes9256 жыл бұрын
I would say woth that short fat case woth a small diameter projectile. The powder burn rate would be a shade slower than standard 223 powder. Just a theory that's why they are using a longer gas system
@johnmorgan40176 жыл бұрын
Given the small amount of actual extra case capacity. 26grains behind a 90gr round is pretty hot. I run 26gr behind a 55gr 5.56 and it has pressure signs.
@derekcooper75146 жыл бұрын
22 nos also has a different shoulder angle from the 55.6 so it seats more affectively in battery and supposably aides in the powder burn efficiency, more engineering went into to the cartridge than people think.

I'm curious to see what it does vs the 22/250. I know that you need a 308 ar 10 base and a barrel that have the right twist rate to stabilise the heavy bullet, but that could be fun to see.

@ccwynn66576 жыл бұрын
Thank you for doing what you do. You were very astute on measuring as-fired case stretch, by using what you were given by the Federal crew. (at Military Arms Channel).I had been fretting over limiting case stretch on Grendel 6.5 reloads The HDY unfired cases were really, really stretching in my Grendel chamber (so I thought). However my concerns have diminished after realizing from your measurements and report on the Valkyrie cases in this video, that the SPC 6.8 case ued in the Valkyrie is not stretching any less than my Grendel cases.
@Mike-xi4zt5 жыл бұрын
I have discovered that more case stretch is caused by pulling the expander ball out through the resized neck than firing in the chamber. Solution is to push the neck expander down through after the neck is resized. This almost eliminates case stretch.

I reload a lot of .223 for my ar. Keep having issues with my lee resizing and decap die pin bending! What are your thoughts on a better die to use? I’m newer to hand loading my dad did it with his dad now I do it not really for money savings but for accuracy and it’s a nice hobby love watching your videos and I reload to them as well using my own load data of course
@kylevanwinkle20816 жыл бұрын
Robert Rechsteiner are you trying to reload factory loaded 5.56 brass. Some mil-spec loads have a small piece of brass in the way of the de-priming pin. Another thing is making sure the case is centered under the de-priming pin and not slightly off. This is unlikely but possible
@s10v8dude6 жыл бұрын
I use a lee universal decapper, then clean. I have taken my sizer and pulled the decapping pin up so it is not in use. I also bought extra strong decapping rods for the universal decapper.
@JohnnysReloadingBench6 жыл бұрын
The Lee decapping and expander rods are pretty stout, so something must be wrong. Someone else mentioned making sure the case gets centered and I would agree with that. However, by the time the decapping pin hits brass, you would think that the resizing die would have already centered the case at least a little bit. You might try raising the decapping pin up into the die a little bit, which should give the die a little more time to get things aligned before contact is made. Other than that, I would say to just be easier on the up-stroke so you can feel problems before they bend your pin. I like to "feel" the case up into the die rather than go at it with a bunch of force, and that has saved me from bending or breaking things a lot of times. It might slow down your process just a little, but it's worth it. Especially while you work out your problem. Good luck!

@spyderxtra7776 жыл бұрын
nope it fires them 150fps faster than a 5.56..... the real point of this round is to shoot the 90gr smk into targets at 600-1200yds, that’s where it shines, otherwise there really isn’t much of a point other than “just for kicks”
@colsoncustoms89946 жыл бұрын
It might also be effective on deer with a 100 + grain load like the "swine smasher". 6.8 or 6.5 would do the same thing in that situation though.
@spyderxtra7776 жыл бұрын
It should work well enough, but again, not worth buying a 224V as a hunting round if you don't also plan on using it for long range target shooting.

Johnny: Great early look at this cartridge. But I have one question, and that is why? What is the niche, or purpose, of this round? Do you see a potential advantage over the 6.5 Grendel?
@JohnnysReloadingBench6 жыл бұрын
I don't see it as superior to the Grendel in any way. I guess on paper they say it can stay supersonic a little longer for long range work, but outside of that I don't see them as comparable. I'll take a 123gr bullet for deer or hogs over a 90gr bullet every day of the week. People like 22 caliber. That's really all there is to it.
@DMHal016 жыл бұрын
TXARmory - it's not supposed to replace the Grendel. It's supposed to give competition shooters the edge at the 600 yard line and for PRS small bore.

I'm pretty confident the 224 will use something between RL-15 and RL-17 in burn rate for the best velocity. Unfortunately, I can only think of BL-C(2) and H-414. Maybe Varget will be a good compressed powder load for it. If I ever do get one, and that's a big IF since I hate overbore cartridges, I'll shoot it in a bolt action anyway.

I'm commenting, even though this video is 4 years old...I'm seeing a theme, where many of these fast moving, small bore cartridges are loaded overly hot, and all seem to show pressure signs on the brass. And that said, in my world, I'm reloading a lot of .308 Winchester and 7.62x51. After shooting several boxes of factory ammo, upon examination of the brass, I am finding pressure signs on it, too. Like.. wow man, your ammo is rough on my gun, and some of the brass isn't even useable for reloading because the rims are destroyed and there are burrs, and there are blown primers...even though they are crimped.. which is another pain in the ass, as it makes it much harder to re prime.
@DominicZelenak2 жыл бұрын
NATO spec ammo and hunting loads are loaded very very hot. Match and target ammunition seem to adhere to loading manuals much better. If the crimped primer pockets are giving you issues, I recommend the Dillon Precision Super Swage 600. It works great for me, and comes with everything you need for 5.56 and 7.62 NATO.

Am I off-base here? This looks like a necked down 6.8 SPC 2 case. I don't undersand why they wouldn't neck down a 6.5 grendel case to a take a 6mm 105 grain bullet. I know 6mm AR is already a thing and trademarked so that might be the only reason, but I figure grendel has cheap steel cased and if you're hand-loading, a grendel case with a 6mm bullet seems superior in every way.

I am going to run the numbers and see what the best option is for people doing $1-$3 per month. I think those are the only people getting shafted. I'll let you know before the next Patreon pledges are processed at the end of the month. I need to review the options.

So I had a thought...if this case capacity is really only allowing you to seat a heavier .224 bullet and stay within the COAL for a box magazine, how is it able to produce the numbers Federal is talking about, "super sonic out to 1300 yards"? The volume of the case was not that much different from a 5.56 case, so I would assume your powder loads would not be that much different? I'm just trying to think through the variables that would allow this cartridge to deliver what they are saying. So far it just sounds like a bullet with a much better ballistic coefficient, but chamber pressures similar to that of 556? Or does case design also have something to do with it?

Bryan Grigsby - I was thinking the same thing. I've made the mistake of jumping into new cartridges based on hype years ago and learned that I'll wait a year or so after a cartridge release for more in depth review before forking over my cash.

When you start crunching the numbers for long range shooting, high bc is extremely important. A gain of .05 can make substantial difference. If you can get high enough gains in bc, you can even drop velocity and shoot further super sonic. I was blown away by this when comparing cartridges like 6.5 Grendel to standard lower bc .308. The 308 has a heavier bullet, and is traveling faster out of the barrel, but the 6.5 will out shoot it since the bullet slows down so much faster with the 308. Obviously high bc bullets in the 308 platform gives you the same gains, but it does illustrate the point pretty well. Completely changed how I view ballistics. I agree with D Hal that we need more solid data to confirm their claims but on paper so far, it looks good.

Colson Customs - true story, I do like the idea behind it but if Arne Brennan gets his way I'll be going with a 257 Raptor instead since I reload and I have so much 5.56 brass.

Have you looked at the 277 Wolverine?
@DMHal016 жыл бұрын
Colson Customs I have it in a TC G2 12.5" im selling on GB, I think it's a little hyped because I could only get it to 90% of a 6.8 SPC and that's standard SAMMI 6.8 SPC ammo not hot loads like what SSA sells. It's easy to load for and it does extend the range beyond the 300 BLK but not huntable range passed 300 yards.

What's the measurement of a loaded neck vs. fired?

.251 before firing, .259 after. Thanks! I did remember to measure that but forgot to mention it in the video.

Johnny's Reloading Bench that's a lot of expansion.
@22lrmarksmen6 жыл бұрын
That's a lot of expansion. Not good for brass life. I just made a custom reamer (had it made of course) for a 224 Grendel. Mine has much less expansion. It looks like it'll smoke the Valkyrie. I really wonder why they chose the 6.8 case to start this out on. Seems like they almost did it right. Check out my first day out with mine. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gp2mg6ygZ7WGa6M

Do you think this might be a good hunting round?
@JohnnysReloadingBench6 жыл бұрын
I think it would be with the right bullet selection. Right now there is a limited selection of very heavy, expanding .224 bullets. I'm interested to see how available the Federal Fusion bullet will be to us reloaders. Outside of whatever they come up with, the 75gr Swift Scirocco is the heaviest hunting bullet I know of. I need to look around a little closer and see if others are available. Mostly match stuff in that weight class, though.

Johnny's Reloading Bench yeah. I'm looking for a new antelope cartridge. Love my 243 but when you have an AR you just want to use it and I'm not satisfied with 6.8 or 6.5. Great rounds but can't replace my 243 for lopers. Love the channel.

@SKIPPYISAAUSSIE6 жыл бұрын
On one federal box I seen advertised 2700fps for the 90SMK My .223 bolt gun is shooting 80 VLDs at 2920 fps with 25.0grns I’d ADI 2208 ( rebadged for USA as Varget ) shoots so good it’s boring 😆 With all this buzz about this new wiz bang round. It peaked my interest. But me thinks I’ll stick to what I have atm. The thing looks like a .22 dasher. I understand it’s made for a AR platform. But a Fast Twist 22-250 can have the higher BC pills zipping out quite fast.

Very interested to see how this cartridge does. Can it still fire a 55 grain or is it kind of relegated to 70+ grain longer range bullets?
@colsoncustoms89946 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, and for most applications, why wouldn't you use the bullet that gives it the advantage. I was just asking if it could even shoot them. Not sure if the throat is relieved in such a way for the longer bullets that it wouldn't shoot lighter ones correctly.
@jacobzachary56316 жыл бұрын
... I think there may be some guys that do this for yote hunting... maybe not 55s but 60 grainers will for sure get tried. I posted another comment about some things I have heard and seen about neck legnth of the case and internal case geometry effecting throat erosion. I don't think it will be as bad as a nosler even loaded light, but we will see. that said, twist rate is NOT going to be ideal for a 55 if it is IDEAL for a 90... I think your gona have to try lightening bullet a bit at a time and seeing what the stability is like. I've heard weird things happen especially to bonded bullets when you start spinning them that fast (de-lamination)
@colsoncustoms89946 жыл бұрын
People have been saying "omg it's going to be such a barrel burner" but 55 grain 5.56 is hauling butt yet they don;t have the same concerns with it toasting bores. I can't imagine that a 90 grain bullet running at 2,700fps will be any more rough on a barrel than a 5.56 at 2,900+ fps.

Good job. Best way to get brass and which bullet. Just put one on lay away. Stag arms . What powder. Thank you for the work. Thank you for the video
