Great Vid JRB, I much prefer this old style format of shooting a ladder test for charge weights, instead of picking random max charges. I have been using that swage gauge tool for a few years, excellent tool and makes setting up the Dillon supper swage for crimp removals very easy, Allows you to not go overboard. I have ordered from them on Sunday night and received shipping information within 30 min. The family that runs that business are good people. Excellent shooting JRB, looks like WOA barrels are delivering also. I sure like the WOA barrels I have in .223. Keep up the great work.

Great video, great information. Once I started loading the OAL to 2.30 everything I loaded and shot through the 1:6.5 twist barrel shot good to great groups. I ended up using RL-17 and massed produced. I was shooting .4-.5 groups with the RL-17 max load. Next up is working up a dear hunting load with the solid copper bullets for the Valkyrie and the .223 Wylde. Good luck!

Discovered that gauge a couple of months ago and it has been a huge help with my hand swaged 300 BLK case conversions, which pop the primers out pretty regularly. I guess I’ll have to get one of those pocket trimming tools, too. I’m still not convinced the Valkyrie round is necessary yet. I may stick with 77 gr .223 and then my Grendel for heavier bullets and longer distance and not worry about the gap in between. Especially since the Valkyrie eats up brass at such a high rate so maybe not a reloader’s dream. But I’ll keep watching, maybe you can change my mind.

Love those longer gas systems, This is especially true for the larger than .223 Calibers. Great results with the 90s. Yes 18" bbl is giving up very little and easier to handle.

Hoping to hit the desert this weekend and punch some paper. I have 88elds loaded with H4350 and RL17 right now. And I have a box of 95s waiting for the next trip. As well as I will be grouping the 53Vmax and getting velocities with that. Excited for the next, I really wish I could do load development in my backyard

Between you and Fourtune Cookie I'm going to the poor house. He got me into the RCBS case rep kit. I decided to go with the Lyman fr the case leinght gauge. I was watching how the author of the video sold me on it. I'm building a case prep table. I have o get my brother helping me build it. I can d it by myself but it's me fun to work on something we both worked on. I bought the past 2'" chopsaw t cut den .223 to make .300 blackout. I want all the tools on ones bench so I don't have a cluttered table. I'm going to get to work on the when my Lyman turret press kit gets here. Then m going to rearrange my loading room going to put the computer and printer down there. Sir I hope you don't mind that I steal a bit of your rirmat for your videos. I love the shooting part. I am getting a old used DSL to put down range the soI can get that split screen for shooters. Who knows in a few years I will have every upper for the A-15 and AR 10 lowers. My finger is on that red candy like button that says order the .300 blackout upper. I'm holding back so I can learn the .223/5.56 round. I want to see what he difference in the two steps rate on my 18" 5.56 with a 1/9 twist rate. I know that the heavier bullets don't like the slow twist rate. I might go to a 1-8 twist. I would like to shoot 77 gn and up. Not much choice but I want to try. I think that the 55gn will shoot the best if I need advice I will ask you. You seem to know more about the AR platform rifle. I will get the .300 by Christmas and I would love to get a 458 socom for my dad. He loved the 45-70 and the 50-110. The most modern rifle my dad had was a M1A/ M14. As usual I love the videos. I hope to have one out today.is just a first Firearm video chalange that Fourtune Cookie started several years ago and 243 outdoors picking it up and started to pass it around. Something quick and then asy to do. You should one also. Anyway happy shooting and keep those great videos coming.

I haven't pulled the book out but I believe the swaging kits used on good press able to be used as a swage press [ I believe your turret press qualifies) will swage the pocket also and uniform the size. I would go a step further and use a depth cutter to uniform the pocket depth.

Johnny, I checked the Hornady reload data for the 88 ELD & used the published COL of 2.25 w/ CFE 223 @ 25.5 & 26 gr w/ S&B brass and primers. The 25.5 Avg velocity for 8 shots was 2731 ES 16 SD 6.That group was nothing special. The 26.0 gr Avg velocity for 10 shots (all shot consecutively) was 2771 ES 45 SD 13 from a 22" 7T Criterion, Craddock precision barrel. I think somewhere between these 2 charges is a node that will get stabilization past 1000 yds and a MOA or less group. The brass and primers looked good so that is encouraging. I think I will stick with the S&B 6.8SPC brass and resize it from now on. Don't give up on the CFE quite yet. 5 shots of the 10 shot group measured CTC 1.675 Vertical x .732 Horiz . The other 5 measured .635 vertical x .222 horiz. in a cluster. All shot from a front and rear bag. I hope I'm getting close to the sub MOA load. I ordered the brass from Cavitybackedbulletts.com and they all came primed so I was able to re-use the primers after resizing the brass. Just thought I would pass my info along. Hope this assists someone. Thanks for your continued efforts.

After shooting if you open it all the way then close it all the way and return it to your setting it will stay movable, and close it to clean the barrel. The bad primer pockets thing is a real kill-joy. I've seen in other vids (shooting at range) where it likes to shred bullets but that seems to happen beyond 100yrds for the most part. I'm really questioning the worth of 224v now even more. maybe they'll figure all this stuff out in a year or two but for now if i'm going to blow money up a cats ass i'd sooner get a 338 Lapua. but great vid as always, thanks

@Johnny's Reloading Bench I know in the video you say you will talk about the seating die, but I am hoping you can verify what I have above. I just finished loading a ladder of charges, with starline brass, RE17, and Hornady ELD 88gr. Due to the compressed charges my ogive lengths (and OALs) were moving around. Adjusting a standard die is a PIA in comparison to the die you are using.

The Go/No-Go gauge should only have ONE side, the Go, go into the primer to the bottom of the primer pocket, the other side, No-Go, CAN go in a little bit, as long as it does NOT make it to the bottom of the primer pocket. JRB, my 18” 1:7 twist shoots the 90gr Fusion into .750” for 5 shots at 100yds, with perfectly round holes! Edit: I only fired one group on the Fusion, so not a large set to go by, will shoot 2 more groups and save the last 5 rounds for miscellaneous sighting.

@jimhans1
@jimhans1 6 жыл бұрын
i556 no sir, all of my AR platform rifles have been built by myself personally. I’ve found it to be a lot more financially feasible to build my own with top tier parts than to buy a prebuilt unit from any maker, either due to quality of parts used in them or just plain cost they are trying to charge.
@i556xx4
@i556xx4 6 жыл бұрын
Nice, I just don't understand how some of the barrel makers charge 300$ to 400$ and the barrels cant't shoot sub MOA, I see video of the msr shooting amazing in 223 and 224 and from 18inch barrels with a 1 in 7 twist barrels . I don't understand how savage does it? is it the hand lapping , is the bolt and barrel blueprinted or matched. what is their trick?
@jimhans1
@jimhans1 6 жыл бұрын
i556 well, I’m not sure what savage does in their production line, but to get the best out of any barrel/bolt combo, the barrel should be headspaced to its bolt. I personally lap my upper receiver barrel mount to be square to the receiver, and I bed the barrel extension in Marine-Tex if it’s not a tight fit to the upper for some reason. I’ve also found that there are a lot of videos in general about folks having “awesome” shooting rifles that tend to cherrypick their groups versus showing how CONSISTENTLY accurate the guns actually are. Getting one group out of 5 that’s sub-MOA does not make a gun sub-MOA imo, it takes the ability to shoot numerous groups back to back that are sub-MOA before I personally rate a gun/ammo combo to be sub-MOA. Not every gun is capable of true, consistent sub-MOA groups. Either due to tolerance stacking, bore quality, etc. But most should be able to get there with proper ammo/load development.

I first want to thank you for the great videos. I have just now finished my Valkyrie build. Of course we are on lock down here in NM and the gun ranges run by the county are closed. Working up some loads following what you have done. I like the fact that you work with so many different powders. I am one of those that once I find a decent performer I stick with it and rarely vary form it. I do have one question. It is about the chronographs you use. I have seen the LabRadar, the magneto speed and you obviously have used some shoot thru chrony. Which do you like the best. I have an older beta chrony which worked great for me in KY. However out here in NM with so much bright sunlight it just refuses to work consistently. I am currently using a magneto speed but don't care for the way it throws off my POI. Hate wasting more ammo than I have to. So what are your thoughts on the LabRadar. Thanks again for all the great vids.

At 8:53, after talking about loose primer pockets you remove the crimp ring? ? ? ? Why? Just bump the burr raked by the old primer cup, back a smidge and then force the new primer into the pocket, with a hand primer tool. This is the way you get at least a few firings without losing the primer keeping interference fit. Hornady is making Big Federal look bad, by running the crimp ring on their cases. Federal has used billions of crimp rings in their military ammo offerings but failed to see the need with their Valkyrie ammo. Sheesh!

Johnny ; In a completely unrelated matter , I'd very much like to have your opinion . I recently saw in a comment section of another channels video , a guy give his recipe for .223 sub-sonic load. His is 17.5 grains of H335 with a 72 grain bullet . Does this sound safe to you ? When I started loading I was told that undercharging can be as dangerous as overloading . The closest loading to this is 21 grains of H335 . I appreciate your attention to detail and would like to have your thoughts on this matter. Thanks in advance.

@jarredlkling 6 жыл бұрын
It can be dangerous to undercharge this is true. If there is not enough charge to get the bullet out of the barrel then you will have a bullet stuck in the barrel and the next shot will blow the barrel up. I would not recommend that load recipe out of an 18+ inch barrel but for and SBR/Pistol with at 8-inch to 14-inch barrel it would probably be ok. It is not recommended to take load data from a youtube video, JRB will tell you that. You can and should test it yourself if truly interested in a subsonic .223 load. Start at the lowest published charge weight and slowly move down. Only shoot one round at a time and check the barrel for a bullet that might not have had the energy to make it out of the barrel after each shot and before shooting the next round and stop once you are subsonic. should be easy enough and not a lot of materials need to be invested to find a charge weight that will work. Good luck and Dont blow your face off.
@orionfixr7713
@orionfixr7713 6 жыл бұрын
Ok . I should have given the reason I was given for not undercharging a load . Supposedly , if the charge is small enough to only take up 1/2 case capacity or there about , the primer can cause the entire load to flash all at once instead of burning the powder, there fore causing an explosion instead of a burn. In that case pressure is the danger, not a squib load.
@jarredlkling
@jarredlkling 6 жыл бұрын
Interesting, I have never head that before. H335 is a pretty slow burning powder as it is and even if it did explode rather then burn I doubt it would be over the pressure an AR-15 chamber could take. I don't know the answer though. I shoot H335 with 55 grain at 21.0 grains for my plinking loads and its only about half the case capacity and it's not ben a problem. It is only a 3.5-grain difference between the 17.5 grains for the subsonic load and my 21.0 grain load and I would assume the extra 17 grains that the 72-grain bullet has over the 55-grain would take up that volume in the case and make it pretty equal or even less volume in the case compared to the loads I shoot as far as leftover case volume goes.

Why is it hard on brass? Too hot? Wrong shoulder taper?
@ostiariusalpha
@ostiariusalpha 6 жыл бұрын
It's just bad brass, man. For cases with a good, tight primer pocket, you can get plenty of reloads. But you saw how many of those new Starline brass he had to reject before he even got started, it's the same with the Federal brass: started with bad primer pockets right from the factory.

So a 224 Valkyrie upper works on a standard 223 lower an does it use regular 223 mags?
@paulharveu526
@paulharveu526 6 жыл бұрын
It uses 6.8 SPC mags. You Might be able to get 2 or 3 rounds in a 10 round .223 mag like Grendel, but not sure. PMAGs are a no go from what I understand, the thicker plastic doesn't give room for the emm, 'Girth' of the .224/6.8
@ostiariusalpha
@ostiariusalpha 6 жыл бұрын
@@paulharveu526 Girth is irrelevant, the cartridges will simply stack in a semi-stagger pattern instead of a full double stack. What matters is the case body taper, and the difference in this angle is what causes 6.8 SPC and 6.5 Grendel cartridges to bind up after inserting just a few round in the standard USGI mag.

@jimhans1
@jimhans1 6 жыл бұрын
Big Racer even with the updated brass it’s STILL eating them to pieces in a single shooting. The whole problem has been the rebated rim design that Nosler put on the brass. It’s forcing all of the rearward pressure to a much smaller area than if it had been left the standard diameter that the 6.8 is, that’s why the 224VALK isn’t doing the same thing to the fired brass that the 22N is doing!

Daniel Byrnes nah, the 1:7” twist barrel will provide all the accuracy for the cartridge for the largest group of bullet weights, excluding the 95gr SMK. My 1:7” twist 18” barrel will shoot everything from 40gr Ballistic tips to 90gr SMK and VLD bullets all to sub-MOA if I do my part on the trigger. The 1:6.5” twist barrel I had would cause bullets as heavy as 55gr to come apart mid-flight with the hotter loads.
