It’s a common misconception, fluffed up by the law schools themselves, that attorneys make 6-figures a couple of years out and lots of them go to big law. Well big law accounts for a single digit percentage of most law schools and real workaday legal jobs don’t touch 6 figures in a major market like Washington DC for the first 7 years. I can’t imagine how long it takes in small markets like Charlotte. Law schools lie about their employment statistics. Unfortunately many of us were already waist deep in debt when the 2008 financial crisis pulled back the curtain on the profession. I relied on the employment statistics in choosing the state, cheapest option available. If I had known the real numbers, I probably would have made different choices. I expect that’s true of many young attorneys these days. Good luck, comrade!

@michiganfamily19 жыл бұрын
+billyboby28 If you wish to follow Dave's plan, then he would say keep $1,000 in your savings for emergencies and put the rest toward your debt. Once the debt is completely gone, build your savings back up to at least 6 months of your income. Once you've done that, consider moving or buying a house. If you're going to buy a house, save up another 20% of the cost of what you want to spend as a down payment, and get a 15-year mortgage. It sounds like your living conditions currently are pretty miserable. I think Dave's advice would be to stay put until you have paid off all of your student loan debt and have that 6-months of savings. Then consider moving somewhere else. That's just my interpretation, though. Good luck!

+billyboby28 dude you make a good amount if you're working 40hours a week especially if your rent is only 330 a month. I would say put 70% of your income into these loans and they will dissapear within 2 years.
@ominous4508 жыл бұрын
$330/month for rent? Sounds like you're living with roommates in an effed up neighborhood. I was like you but I was paying $675/month w/ 5 roommates. I lived there for two years. I say tough it out until you pay off it off but you have to pay extra towards the loans every month. If you make minimum payments it'll take longer and you'll end up paying more.
It's nice to play hardball with students about borrowing and irresponsibility, but let's talk about who's getting rich off this deal... if tuition wasn't astronomical, there would be no need to borrow $225,000. $150,000 tuition plus living expenses, it adds up real quick even when you live like a bum. Schools ARE gouging. If it weren't for student loans, people would not be able to get educated.

if it wasnt for student loans the universities would be far cheaper.

Dave is so condescending and arrogant when he talks to people. How does this guy have such a wide audience???

Why does Dave continuously interrupt the person who is trying to talk? That is so rude.

there r different ways to look at this. first the woman was honest enough to let him know about her debt/loan so she too will know where their relationship stands. since the mans loan is less and looks like his family is supportive he would marry her and support her in paying off her loans or once the loans are paid off she would dump him.

How the heck did they get those monthly payments? My wife and I combined make half the money they do and have half the student loan debt with approximately the same interest rate. But, our monthly payments are 4x higher than this couples and every time I try to get a reduced payment I am told that I am ineligible for reduced payment because I make too much money.

They're both lawyers and they make $80K combined?
@eileeneclark90115 жыл бұрын
5/16/19.....This guy owes $21,000. for his college/law school debt.... but his fiance owes $220,000. for her college/law school debt. He should pay for his debt....then let her pay for hers. Over half couples married today end up divorced---so WHY should this guy pay off her debt & take a chance on divorce? This guy could pay off his bebt & put healthy amount towards his retirement. AFTER she pays her debt in full, she can start working on retirement. SORRY but that's the only FAIR way to start off this marriage!

I dont think this guy has any clue on how student loans actually work. That is not a 225,000.00 debt. That family is going to pay well over 600,000.00

You're making $40k? I'd say as of that point keep your lifestyle at half that or less. It's not difficult. And I sure wouldn't be having a kid at that point.

If you have variable interest rates, then you want to make sure you refinance with fixed interest rates.

Everyone must have automatic payment directly deducted from their bank account. You will be eligible for an interest rate reduction.

I wonder what tier law school they went to. 40k sounds REALLY low, even for first year. It also sounds like they are close to DC. They can't get a government contract or a state job? To get them on debt forgiveness?
