Just discovered you through your podcast. I'm a beginner to Japanese. Don't know much but I'm taking my time. This video is way too advanced for me but Arigatou for speaking in English to explain everything you said.

So it's similar to (to iu yori ) grammar
@MasaSensei
@MasaSensei 3 ай бұрын
Great question! Both というより and どころか are used to express contrast or correction, but they differ in nuance and usage. Let’s break down the differences: 1. というより (to iu yori): Meaning: "Rather than saying," "It’s more like." Usage: It’s used to correct or clarify a statement, often when the speaker feels that the initial idea isn’t completely accurate and wants to offer a more fitting description. Example: 彼は歌手というより俳優です。 "He is more of an actor than a singer." Here, the speaker is correcting or refining the initial statement (that he is a singer) and suggesting a more accurate description (he is an actor). 2. どころか (dokoro ka): Meaning: "Far from," "On the contrary." Usage: It’s used to emphasize that reality is the complete opposite of what is expected or stated. It introduces a contrast that is often more extreme or surprising. Example: 彼は歌が上手などころか、音痴です。 "Far from being a good singer, he’s tone-deaf." In this case, the expectation (that he might be good at singing) is not only wrong, but the truth is the complete opposite (he’s tone-deaf). Key Differences: というより corrects or refines a statement, offering a more accurate description or explanation. どころか contrasts two ideas in a more drastic way, showing that the reality is the opposite or much worse than what was initially suggested. Example to compare both: 彼は太っているというより、筋肉がある。 "He’s not so much fat as he is muscular." (Correcting the idea of being fat by offering a more fitting description: muscular.) 彼は太っているどころか、痩せています。 "Far from being fat, he’s skinny." (The reality is the complete opposite: he’s skinny.)
