Step 1: make glair 2: apply to leather and let tack setup so it doesnt leave a fingerprint 3: heat stamp (temp? needs experimentation) 4: cool stamp briefly with wet rag 5: apply vaseline to stamp to stick to gold leaf 6: stick 2 sheets of gold leaf to stamp 7: press stamp into leather 8: wipe away excess leaf with [damp?] clothe, I assume this will also take away the excess glair

I don’t see whether you are heating the brass stamp? How does the impression get made and how does the gold stick on?

With what did you prep/wet the stamp? And did you put something on the leather before stamping it?

You put glaire (also called size) on the leather to make the gold leaf adhere. Egg whites is what bookbinders have used for centuries, if not millennia, but now they make pre-made glaire you can buy. For this type of stamping the brass tool is heated and then polished briefly. Normally you lay the gold leaf on the leather and then stamp it with the brass tool. This is the first time I've ever seen someone put the gold leaf directly on the brass tool.
