I am a criminal justice specialist retired. I have arthritis from Martial arts and boxing in both hands. I used to carry a 357 magnum but now I carry a Taurus TX 22 and at times a Beretta bobcat 22. Shot placement counts more with a 22 but a 22 will kill you. You would be shocked to see how many people are brought into hospitals and die from a 22. In fact one night in Savannah there was a shooting someone was shot with a 45 another one a 22 both shot in the chest they found the 22 in the left thigh and that person was dead on arrival the guy with the 45 was still talking. Shot placement and penetration is extremely important. Because of my arthritis a 22 is the only gun I can shoot accurately and on target at this time and I have no problem whatsoever carrying it.

I bet no one has volunteered to be shot by your 22LR. No criminal says “look at those weak 22s, they bounce off me like rain drops”. Shoot a 22LR at a thick chunk of meat, see the damage it can do.

If you like .22, you really owe it to yourself to try out a 5.7mm pistol. Just a hair more recoil but vastly more power from that caliber. My M&P 5.7 (which has a rotating barrel gas system) has about the same recoil as my TX-22 Compact pistol.

Not accurate. Lots of criminals received lots of shots of 9mm or .45 acp and they just kept going and going. A 22 LR behaves way worst than that. A 22 LR firearm as self defense is absurd absolutely stupid and unnecessary.
@rfdsrd

@@reiniergarcia So what? Your thinking is skewed. You just stated that 9mm or .45ACP will at times not stop a perp, does that mean full loads of .357mag or .44mag? THAT is stupid for most folks due to spray and pray of heavy recoil. Consistent ACCURACY matters most, and that means several Federal Punch .22LR pellets to the head, Mossad style ... yes, they use suppressed .22LR for pistols and rifles (Ruger 10-22). CCW handguns are mostly deterrents and don't hold a candle to a 12ga #00 buck shotgun or an AR15 5.56NATO round. To each their own, don't you be stupid.

I have owned a TX22 for over a year now, and have put about 1,000 rounds through it. It has been more reliable than almost all of my center fire handguns. I understand the limitations of the 22LR, but 17 rounds of 22LR would be effective in stopping a vast majority of threats.

I have actually ran into more failures with 9mm over the past year than I have with 22lr. Bought a Ruger mark IV 22/45 tactical a few weeks ago. Have about a thousand rounds through it with only about 5 failures. Most of those were federal automatch not going off. 2 failures were Aguila super extra not feeding because of the waxy coating on them.

@@Catgat37 our mark iv has been flawless so far, but .22 being .22 the very next round could go phfft...and that has been with cheap bulk ammo...the lcp ll has been finicky, but if need be I think it would run 3 magazines just fine, with the right ammo...of course our revolvers and lever guns don't care what they're fed...on the bright side, .22 allows a lot of trigger time, we go to the range almost every week...

The taurus tx-22 i have has hands down been the most reliable semiauto pistol i have ever owned. I dont know what sorcery taurus engineers used to design that pistol that hasnt been already tried in the last 100 years, but they absolutely got it right with that one. Ive only got 5-6 bricks through mine thus far, but not a single malfunction. I am impressed for sure. Unfortunately the fullish size of it would make it a pain for me to carry daily. But is a damn fine pistol none the less. Would make a fine back up to a 22 rifle when open carry is more useful out in the woods maybe.

Here's the bottom line to me for all this hubbub about .22LR for SD/EDC/CCW ... "If you can put a hole through the vitals you're aiming for, caliber doesn't matter, and if you can't, caliber doesn't matter." Accuracy matters. Speed matters. Recoil matters. Noise levels matter. Revolver reload speed can matter, too. A firearm's report matters when there's no hearing protection - worse yet indoors and/or in confined spaces, such as a vehicle. The cylinder blast from a .22LR revolver is of zero consequence if your weak hand happens to cover the cylinder forcing cone area during firing, and firing positions can be far more radical than with a centerfire. Unlike the snubby ejectors for all centerfire cartridges and .22mags, a .22LR snubby ejector will 100% dislodge all cases from the cylinder with the tap of a thumb or palm = surer and faster reloads (of at least 8 rounds and not 5 or 6). You will have the opportunity to practice more with a .22LR handgun. An eight shot .22LR snubby revolver loaded with the proper premium cartridges - Federal Punch, CCI Velocitor and others - is a CCW weapon not to be ignored - or dissed. These dayze, a .22LR revolver is quite the antidote for the typical SD scenario, but to each their own, and I do own a gaggle of centerfire handguns - a 1911 .45acp semi-auto, a wheel gun .357mag/.38spl, and a 9mm semi-auto. They're all good aggressor deterrents, but the Ruger LCR22 allows me more accuracy and speed, amongst more than a few other good attributes. YMMV.

Love the video. I like to .22 for self defense for a couple of reasons. Usually a smaller gun equals the increased ability to hide it on your body. Shot placement is easier and follow up rounds group better. Ammo is cheaper which means you can afford to practice a bunch (lots of fun to shot). And as a young kid I witnessed an adult male get shot on the side of his body near the ribs and he couldn't stand and he was in a lot of pain and he ended up hospitalized. As a LEO I've seem first hand how deadly the little 22 is. I shot the Taurus TX 22 that belonged to a friend and wrestled with the idea of purchasing one, I found a great deal on one so I made the purchase and have no regrets.

ER nurses/doctors don’t ask about caliber. They ask how many holes and where. A pellet gun is lethal if you hit the right spot. Biggest thing is reliability of rimfire ammo and getting as many shots on target as possible. I don’t feel any less confident with my g44 than I do with my g26 or g19. I EDC pocket carry a little Kel Tec p32 with gold dots. Do I have something else with me in 9mm? Usually, but if not, I’m still confident I can protect me and mine with my lil pocket rocket.

22lr is quote good for home defense actually, because you are able to set the stage and stack many many variables in your favor because it's your home! You get to set up the security layers, you get to chose your locks, warning signs, cameras, alarms, etc. And then 22 is much quieter than a 9mm even unsuppressed, which is huge in a confined space. Fire a 9mm without earpro and everyone in the house will be deaf for a considerable amount of time. Fire a 22 and you might just be ok. hearing is a hugely important sense. I have a TX22 with 16rnds and a 21 rnd extended mag in the bedside safe and it's very adequate I think. I wish they had a TORO version of the regular non-competition TX22, that would make it even better.

The new Taurus TX22 Compact is now my favorite 22lr concealed carry semi-auto (released in January 2023). Other great choices for concealed carry 22lr are: Smith’s MP 22 Compact and Ruger’s SR22. Of course the orginal TX22 is outstanding for bedside. Also like the Ruger LCP II 22 subcompact. Finally, I also place the Taurus 942 22lr Revolver next to bedside. I think it is important to point out the 22lr is affordable to own and practice a lot with….leading to more accuracy and confidence in its use and performance. For self defense i use the most dependable round by CCI and Aquila. Also, speciality rounds of: Federal Punch, and Winchester Silver Tip.

In my opinion it doesn’t matter what caliber you carry from the 22LR to a 44 mag because all calibers are deadly and if you don’t hit a vital organ 22LR is going to hurt enough that most people would stop the attack long enough for you to get away. Now if you are in Alaska in bear country then the discussion about a caliber might be important to think about. Good video BTW.

I have no physical limitations and shoot my G19 & G26 very accurately, but I choose to carry 22lr. Over the years I have shot thousands upon thousands of rounds and the simple fact is that I can accurately and quickly put the rounds where they need to go. Secondly, I can practice any time I want with my suppressor on. This means I don’t have to go to the range every time I practice and I don’t have to stay stationary and shoot at a stationary target. There are numerous other reasons but those are the highlights. I now shoot my 9mm for fun at the range.

I just happed to see this video. After retiring from the Army I went to nursing school via my V.A. Benefits. I was requested as a surgical nurse. We get a good amount of GSWs. The .22 long rifle round is very much lethal. I am skeptical of those that opine that the .22 LR “lacks stopping power!” True, it won’t know a bad guy backward as would a .38 Special, 9x19mm, or .45 ACP. But any wound to the thigh, lower leg, a weight bearing joint, abdomen, ribs, thorax/lung, neck WILL put a bad guy or anybody else in an immediate state of death or disability immediately. The lead bullets will deform and May travel wherever the go until their energy is spent. This small projectile, if nothing else, will cause severe blood loss sufficient to lower blood pressure in 3 to 5 seconds. A,so, as the gentleman stated, it is easier to get off additional rounds. The .22 LR is a very bad actor.

Accuracy is what matters. For someone who is recoil sensitive, it honestly may come down to a .22LR or nothing at all. I would rather someone shoot a .22 well than a 9mm badly. I've heard of people say that while a .22LR shouldn't be a primary gun, it is acceptable as a backup. This sort of logic has never sat well with me... if it can do the job as a backup, why can't it do the job as a primary? The biggest legitimate complaint about .22LR is not that it isn't effective, but the general unreliability of rimfire. Personally, I think most modern, high quality rimfire these days is pretty darn reliable, but they aren't perfect and one might not be able to get quality ammo. What to do? Get a .22LR revolver. Then, the reliability issue becomes irrelevant

Main thing here.. people have to STOP thinking "expansion" with a .22 from a handgun... in most all cases, the short barrel length does not allow the velocity needed for hollow point Expansion.. one needs to think in terms of solid point PENETRATION.... and 22's do that pretty well.. shoot as the cops are trained to do.. until the threat stops. A 22 can do that.

I have a Ruger Single Six convertible. It has its pros and cons. Pros: It’s intimidating. It looks like it means business, even tho it’s a .22 It’s accurate, easy to aim and hit what you’re pointing at. The 9in. barrel helps with the bullet velocity. It’s easy to clear if there’s a jam. Cons: It’s big and clunky. Not the best conceal and carry weapon. You only have six shots, however if you could change the bore fast enough, you could have an extra six of the other caliber. Loading is slow, also ejecting the spent rounds takes time. I think it’s fine for self defense, but better at home or a car piece than on your person. For carry, I’d probably opt with a snub nose revolver.

22lr rounds from handguns generally have better penetration than 380 hollow point rounds. Yes, lower energy, but that's where effective shots on target first, come into play. My wife's gun is an m&p 22 compact, and she's deadly with it because she's put thousands of rounds through it and has a feeling of control and confidence. I carry an lcp 22 in my pocket during summer months when shorts and tshirts are the norm. Both have proven to be reliable and accurate, and we chose fed punch as our defensive ammo for those tools. To each his own, but many opinions don't reflect reality. 22lr is the perfect caliber for many people.

22LR CCW/EDC/SD = totally viable in the 21st century. Not a semi auto, a revolver, particularly a DA-only snubby and chambered for .22LR The downside of pretty much all DA-only revolvers, particularly the rimfire ones, is the very hefty trigger pull. That might take building up hand/finger strength. Aside from that, I dunno what could be a safer no-worry carry than a DA-only internal hammer wheel gun. Always safe in a holster or pocket, ready to fire with a trigger pull (to which that hefty pull insures a positive attitude that the gun NEEDS to be fired NOW), no safety to think about, no semi-auto FTF or FTE clearing issues. There is no concern with revolver carry condition, it's always in Condition 2. Pull the trigger. If an FTF occurs, keep pulling. FTFs are rare as hen's teeth when using premium cartridges. A centerfire snubby is 5 to 6 rounds. With a .22LR revolver you get 8 to 10 rounds. Reloading kinda sucks but might get better with speed loader training/practice. But, how often will 8 to 10 rounds of Federal Punch or CCI Velocitor not be enuf to stop a threat at 0 to 20 feet? A .22LR in any format adds greatly reduced: noise, cylinder/muzzle blast, recoil issues. Noise factor is something most folks don't dwell on, but it's of particularly serious consequence indoors. A much lowered recoil factor and lowered overall round blast allows for interesting firing positions that might be difficult if not impossible with a centerfire handgun. As long as a hole or two or three can quickly be punched Deep into a human body vital area, the size of the hole is if little concern, then it's speed and accuracy that are most important. A good number of folks would be Far better off with a handgun that will absolutely guarantee better and faster accuracy, and one that's safer and easier to carry. A good snubby .22LR loaded with premium cartridges. YMMV and that's cool, too. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jXuWi4OjrciFa8U ... kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y57Io6qfa5hrnMU ... kzbin.info/www/bejne/n57aaWSFa9CNhq8

When I was an adolescent in the mid-1950s a neighbor boy was riding in the front seat of the family car. At some point he decided to climb from the front to the back seat. while doing so he contacted a 22LR firearm and released the trigger unintentionally. The round struck him in the head, taking his life. I'll never forget the shock of that happening.

a .22 LR bullet is capable of inflicting very serious injuries (e.g. the four people wounded during the Reagan assassination attempt) or death e.g. the Kauhajoki school shooting (11 killed and 1 wounded), the Jokela school shooting (8 killed and 1 wounded), or the 1979 Cleveland Elementary School shooting (2 killed and 8 wounded) as well as the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy. Numerous other shooting incidents have demonstrated that .22 LR bullets can easily kill or seriously injure humans

I have the 22lr conversion kit in my AR for home defense. I choose that to save my ears and plus I do not believe most robbers would continue after shots are made depending if your out in the country or in a city. I would use the 223/556 in the country. I even believe my PCP rifle would push off burglers.

Hell yes 22lr is great for self defense easy to put rounds on target lite no recoil and what people forget to mention is it’s not as loud so it doesn’t kill your hearing if u need to fire in a closed up area say your home vehicle office where ever cost effective more practice more likely to carry this than a heavy ass 45 on your nite stand

Rounds on target is the reason why so many Police departments are switching to 9mm. 22lr drives 32-40 grains per shot so roughly 3 rds to be equivalent to .380 or 4ish for equivalent weight of shot to 9mm. But in actual tissue distribution the Glock 19 has the potential to produce 16 .357 diameter holes or about 18 square inches of paper out of a target before you factor in any expansion. The tx22 with 16+1 you get about 12 square inches removed from the target. A .380 S&W EZ with 8+1 only does about 10 square inches but at least has the potential for expansion depending on ammunition selection

My go to for carry is a ruger lcp2 22 lr. I initially got it for my wife for her to have an inexpensive means of training. I had hopes that it would enable her to cheaply get proficient in shooting a handgun. She is noise and recoil sensitive so in my mind this made sense. In her mind however she had absolutely no intrest. To be honest i dont believe she realizes the benefits of a 22. But none the less this left me with a new 22 pocket pistol just sitting around, and one does not have to twist my arm hardly at any to get me to go plinking in the back yard. After taking the lcp out a couple times i had a few reliability issues, but reliability aside it checked every other box on the carry list for me. It is so small that i can pocket carry it everywhere without being a henderance, without having to change wardrobe, and without anyone around me knowing i have a gun on me. It carries 11 rounds which is less than the 17-18 id like, but for the size is a trade off im ok with. I can absolutely get hits with it, easily, without really trying. I never would have expected a pocket pistol with a tiny grip, and a tiny sight radius, and tiny sight to be able to ring a 6” gong at 40 yards consistently. It does and i can. So all i had to do was make it reliabile and i had a damn fine solution for my carry needs. So put my engineer hat on and started figuring out the cause of the light primer strikes, failures to feed, and failures to extract i was having. Cleaning and polishing the feed ramp made improvements but did not help the light strikes or the ejection issues. So i turned to the interwebs. I found galloway precision made a spring kit with modified spring tensions that seemed they would help with the problems. I ordered it and installed it. After several thousand rounds of various ammo it has proven to be reliable now. More so than some of my center fire pistols. I have been carrying it ever since. It is just too easy. I get up in the morning, get dressed, grab my wallet, keys, pocket knife, and pocket pistol off the top of my safe and put them in their respective pockets. It is with me all day until im done doing everything im going to do for the day and getting ready to shower before bed. By then the doors are locked and self defense is turned over to the Maverick 88 hanging above my bedroom door for the night. Im fully aware of the limitations of the humble 22 lr out of a 2.75” barrel. Its ballistics are not anything to boast about. And im not an operator. Ive never had to use it on anyone. But i do believe that if i ever were to need to shoot someone to stop them from harming me or my family while out and about that it would stop all but the most determined from doing what they were doing. Getting shot with anything is not an enjoyable experience and I believe even if it didn’t involuntarily shut them down immediately, which I believe 22 is definitely capable of doing, it would Atleast make the aggressor find something better to do than stick around and get shot more.

Just seeing this. It's a good discussion of the caliber as a defensive option. In large part I agree with you. I wouldn't say that the .22lr cartridge is an "outstanding" round, but I agree that it's more than "adequate." An appropriate adjective fails me at the moment. And you brought up a point I haven't heard in any other video I've watched: the noise factor. I think this is especially important in a home defense situation. I don't keep a pistol fitted with a suppressor on my night table, so in the (hopefully unlikely) event of a break-in/armed intruder, what I'll be armed with will be unsuppressed and therefore loud indoors. A shotgun blast or 9mm round fired would indeed be painfully loud and most probably disorienting. I have 9mm for EDC. I also have .22lr weapons that can be used for home defense, and I have carried (and will carry in the future) .22lr for personal defense. Depends on the need and the circumstance. I don't really worry about the lethality of the caliber. And you're right about the expansion (or lack thereof) of a .22 caliber round out of a handgun. I don't focus on expansion when talking about .22lr for personal defense, I'm more about penetration and reliability. Accordingly, I buy Federal Premium Punch .22lr ammo as my cartridge of choice for defensive application. Before that, I used CCI Mini Mags (40 gr CPRN), and still have some of that ammo on hand as well.

I agree the Winchester white box is terrible when it comes to 22 ammo. Running CCI and certain Federal ammo works well with a Taurus Tx22. As for self defense, I don’t think anyone would ever volunteer to be shot with a 22. As for using it for self-defense, I recommend a Tx22 for less recoil and any minimal issues.

Great video and discussion. I hesitated to weigh in, but here I go. I've been shooting/hunting for the last 50 years. I have and use all types, calibers, sizes, gauges, etc., of pistols, revolvers, shotguns and rifles. If I was going into military combat, I would want the biggest, high capacity rifle I could reasonably carry. If I'm hunting, I carry the size rifle or shotgun necessary to quickly and humanely kill what I'm hunting. For self defense, it is drastically different. For an attacking aggressor, my only intent is to break contact with that person or persons so I can get away or they leave. That's it! I've carried compact, and full size Sigs, Berettas, Glocks, etc., in 9mm/40S&W for 20 years and while comforting, only a couple of times did I think I might need them. So the last 10 years, I've been carrying pretty regularly a Beretta Bobcat 21A in 22LR. I shoot it enough to know it is reliable with the ammo I use in it and accurate enough to hit a man's chest size target at 25 yds every time. In a pocket holster, I forget I even have it with me it is so comfortable which allows me to ALWAYS have it with me just in case. So yes, a 22LR pistol is sufficient and actually preferable to carry for self defense against humans as a private citizen when out and about in normal daily life.

I'm really looking at the Taurus TX22 to teach my daughter to shoot a handgun. I almost always have a NAA mini .22 lr or mag on me and have had for over 20 yrs. It has gotten me out a several jams. When I was younger and living in the country, I used a .22 rifle and a .22 lr revolver for small game and can testify that it will do some serious damage. So, yeah, I trust a .22 for self defense. One funny thing though, I have had a lot of people tell me that a .22 is not effective, but none of them are willing to take a couple .22 lrs in the chest.

I own and love the TX22 competition. I would love to get the opinion of any assailant that would encounter me after I put 15 rounds in his head in 5 seconds. Maybe he could shed some light on how effective the 22 is… to all those that say no knock down power, stand out there at a hundred yards and let me know how u feel after a clip is emptied into you. The ability to stay on target round after round makes up for size. It comes down to the shooter. I personally will take a 22 all day long.

Most people have the misconception that a bigger caliber gun is going to do them better no matter if it’s a compact 9 mm or a 40 or whatever but mine is a bullet is still a bullet no matter if it’s a small hole or a big hole if the person knows where to shoot it’s not an issue but sitting there and putting around in somebody’s body that leaves a whole big enough to put your fish through it’s just returned it it is overkill literally I’ve been to seminars and gun shows where people were practicing with a compact 9 mm and they did some shooting demonstration and the 22 will still put a hole in a person if need be just like a 9 mm the only difference is is the 22 round will stop sometimes in a lot of times 9 mm does not and it’s very messy it will leave a big hole small entry big exit that’s not needed for 20 to put out plenty enough kinetic energy when it strikes an object even at 20 yards proven fact I’ve seen guys shoot deer with 22 I think I shoot mountain lions with 22 I’ve seen guys shoot bear with 22 in the first round killed the bear is shot placement folks not the size of your gun sound so weird I know but it’s fat

I have a S&W 43C .22 8 shot revolver and a S&W .22 Compact 10 shot semi auto pistol both of which are great guns and both would work well for self defense. The issue is reliability of the .22 round itself because they don't always fire when the firing pin hit the rim of the cartridge. I would opt for a .22 revolver with good quality ammo like CCI Velocitors or Federal Punch. If you get a round that doesn't go off just pull the trigger again. The other issue is if you shoot a drugged up assailant with a 22 he may just keep coming at you...then what !

Would definitely think a .22 lr would be a good choice in your situation. Old ranch butchers would use the 22 lr to dispatch beef and hogs. Yes, it was with a rifle and precisely placed into the brain at 10 ft or so, but some of the slaughter bulls would go over 2,000 lbs and they just collapse on their feet and never take a step. The guy that comes around now uses .22 mag CCI with the full metal jacket. I'm thinking a CNS hit on a 2-legged varmint would produce the same effect.

Great video, important topic, landing a string of accurate shots on center of mass is going to be effective, 22lr has the same ft lbs of energy as the 380 , the only downfall of 22lr is rim fire reliability over the 380 center fire . When it comes to the 22lr firearm itself, I think it's a case by case matter, some are more reliable than others . If a person has done extensive practice with their 22lr firearm and finds it's totally reliable and they can trust it, then more power to them 😄 oh the irony 😂. I can't trust My TX22, YET , BUT I DO TRUST MY GLOCK 'S it's all about trust.

of course the 380/9mm/45 are better, however in my day, folks regularly carried 22s or 22 magnums or 25's or 32s. in fact 32s were the primary side arm for many countries and polices depts worldwide. what happened? did they suddenly lose their ability to shoot or hurt people? no. or calibers were developed and touted as the next best thing since sliced bread. marketing became better. they sold people on the idea that bigger is always better. well if you are going into battle maybe you want something like a hi cap 9mm but in most real world situations folks arent gonna need that. now folks say well what about the mall shooting, 8 shots into the target out of 10. how do we know that the hero couldnt put 10 out of 10 22s into the target and how do we know that the 22s wouldnt have killed the perp just as dead? we dont. no denying that that guy was a hero, but perhaps it wasnt the caliber but the shooter?
