I've used 23 3D printers in the last year! Would I buy them today?
This is a fun video, where we go over the 23 3D printers that have come through the studio in the past year. Some good, some bad, some I'd buy again, some I wouldn't. So my recommendations are pretty simple, just a quick you should or shouldn't buy!
The list of 3D printers is large, and the cost wide spread, from Prusa to Bambu Lab, Creality and more. 3D printers ranging from $99 to $5,500 and everywhere in-between.
Affiliate links helps support our channel! Thank you for considering.

What I found after a few years of printing.... I just wouldn't waste my time on printers that don't have the features and quality I want, unless I had a very specific mod to do. Just spend the money up front, and get what you need. For me Autolevelling is pretty much non-negotiable. I don't even have to think about it, I get consistent first layers. Direct Drive is another, I just won't go back to bowden setup, even with my Delta's.

I think this is solid advice for everything in life, but we love all of the machines because not everyone values features the same or has the same budgets! Thank you for your insight!

@@LoyalMoses my machines are heavily modified, and I'll be converting the old reliable E3V2 to core XY (from a belted dual setup) shortly. I am 100% a tinkerer, but as soon as I went to start selling functional durable prints, reliability, accuracy and consistency changed my priorities. Thanks for the video, great work 👍

Bowden printers are faster to make repairs. But All of my latest printers are Klipper and direct drive. I purchased my last Creality printer (I have 8 of them and 25 total)). The K1 Max was a lemmon and the customer service sucks on that printer. They drug their tails on this until it was past the return period. I got stuck with a $900 brick. I finally got it to print PETG and then it clogged one last time. Done! Just for fun, I bought the cheapers Ender 3, and set it up, with dual Z and bimetal heatbreak. It prints FAR better than the K1 Max, ever did. The Ender 3 has very tight and perfectly aligned walls, no strings with PETG. This is because it has the 4.2.2 motherboard and it is a refined "finished" product that just works. And I had to work on the K1 Max constantly just to get about 8 usable PETG prints off of it. (The main problem is the print head.) And those prints were full of artifacts from the damaged belt drive system. I just received a Kingroon KLPi and it just works fine. I can print carbon X and Nylon X at 260 DEG, with it no problem. The K1 could not even print PETG without clogging. Kingroon KLPi has clean prints. The linear rails work great giving smooth prints. It is easy to set up and run. Using the Chrome Browser interface from klipper. All you have to do is follow their settings for Cura, and just print. So far 10 prints and they are all very good. The Kingroon KLPi is just as fast a the K1 only the KLPi just prints everything I throw at it.

Loved the video and looking forward to more of your expertise. I brought a Bambu Labs PSI Combo with the AMS and had it all up and running within the 15 minutes from unpacking the box to printing my first print with 2 minutes to spare just like Bambu Labs advertised. I started printing everything from poop containers, fridgets, signs, filament spools, and tons of other stuff along with a rack to hold up to 66 boxes/rolls of Bambu and Sunlu filament in their boxes. I've never owned or operated a 3 D Printer before. I've learned so much from trial and error with things like heater head temp changes to unclogging the head, changing build plate temps to help different filaments stick better or not. I printed off LED Risers in order to install more lighting in the print chamber. It's great and I love it. Thanks for all your your videos..... FYI, I've had the printer since the last week in Nov 2023 and as of today Feb 2024 I've used a little over 18 rolls of filament, printed hundreds of pieces and have 752 hours of print time on the P1S. I am proud to say that with that 752 hours of print time I've only had 3 issues with it and was able to solve those issues within a few hours. The P1S has been running almost continuously since I got it. I am definitely addicted to it. Now that I've practiced for the past 5 weeks almost non-stopped I'm thinking it's time to find a way to make a little money with this beautiful machine. Any ideas would be helpful..... Thanks again for all that you do......

I currently have an Anycubic Kobra and Creality Ender 3 V2. I'm going to be getting the Bambu Lab P1S with AMS soon. I have a love-hate relationship with my Ender 3 V2. It's heavily modded and pretty much silent with the Noctua fans mod. But everything that could go wrong with that printer did. It has been nothing but a headache. However, I love it because it has taught me so much about 3d printers. So, I'll never get rid of it. The Kobra has been fine. It's nothing special though and has had a few issues. Print quality has been mostly good. But I did spend a lot of time chasing print quality issues. I have been 3d printing for several years now. And I'm over the tinkering part of it and just want something that works. I considered a Prusa. I know they are fantastic and they have excellent customer support. But I think they're priced just a little too high for what you're getting. 5 years ago it was a no-brainer. But today there are other options in that price range.

Regarding Creality K1. They disrupted the GPL license of Klipper and made firmware closed from users with unknown changes. At the same time, they "tweaked" some essential parameters (like resonance compensation) and made the incorrect choice. There are two reasons why I can't recommend this. Regarding Voron: a lot of engineering faulted solutions in construction, imho. In general thx for good definitions!

My one and only 3D printer was the Artillery X. I did a lot of research on it before I purchased it, so I knew what to expect and what the potential problems were. First I printed parts that I felt would improve the machine's performance, including ductwork and fan to keep the chips on the motherboard cool. Then I installed a solid state contactor to protect the 120 VAC heating platform. (Worked like a charm) Then after testing, I installed CHPOWER Supporting Rod Set for CR-10/CR-10 (these gussets worked perfectly and took out the slight wobble which improved the print quality) Then I changed the firmware to Marlin mesh leveling which really improved the leveling process. I use to love watching it. Amazing process... Great video! Thanks for you honesty!

Almost any 3D printer, when in the hands of an experienced operator, can be quite reliable. But, when it resides in a makerspace with 300 members, that's the real test. We had several different 3D printers and the Prusa 3s was the worst in reliability. I'm not sure why, but the Ender 3-V2 was actually more reliable once we got people to quit messing with the leveling. The reliability got so bad, that almost no 3D printing was being done. So we dumped all the printers and replaced them with 4 Bambu Lab P1Ps. What a huge difference! The 3D printing room is busy again with lots of people using the P1Ps. Bad prints almost never happen, and the printers have never needed maintenance except for occasional cleaning.

Interesting viewpoints. Impersonally a little more frugal as of late for some of those machines to be on my Yes list. But some are a definite yes if I had the funds. As for what I like in printers, I like to build my own and upgrade my printers. I'm currently building a large corexy of my own design. So I do not mind printers that need some upgrades. As such it has a small factor in my decision making. As for Resin printers I agree with what you said. So many now have amazing quality and for far less than what Prusa offers. If Prusa has to lower just one of their 3d printer prices that'd definitely be the one to lower. It's just way overpriced for the competition. There are certain features on printers that are really worth the extra cost. I always keep that in mind when choosing one. For instance an IDEX. It's like having two printers for the price of one. I bought an IDEc from a sort of generic brand and actually love it. It's a Tenlog TL-D3 Pro. Currently it is the main printer I use. It took a few small tweaks like a tightening of some screws and a belt plus a little love on the E2 extruder calibration height adjustment but it prints really good and reliable. Only upgrades I did was I swapped the nozzles to a 0.6, swapped the bed springs for silicone standoffs, and purchased their nozzle brushes which do not come with the machine. I love the duplication mode. That is where the two printers in one come in & it basically cuts print times in half if you have multiple prints of the same object. In fact I ran some duplication prints all weekend and am currently running one right now. All of which have been parts for my corexy I'm building. I love IDEX. So much so that I turned my Ender 3 Max into one as well.
@LoyalMoses
@LoyalMoses 8 ай бұрын
Thank you for this! It makes me happy to read that others are using IDEX machines and having success with them! As for your large corexy machine, is this just for personal use or are you going to release it?! Thank you for the comment, I really appreciate it.

@@LoyalMoses I am really building the coreXY for fun so currently it is just going to be for personal use. At least for now. I am early in the design and trial & error phase of building it. Plus there are a lot of options already out there to build or buy that are already proven designs. But who knows what will come of it after it's finished. That is a bit far off for now.😉

Okay got a few question. 1) So I have an old Ender 3 pro, that has the old board so it does not work with the CR touch. Is it worth upgrading my old Ender 3 pro or should I buy a new one that has the new board? Or should I just look at other printers? 2) So the Prusa resin printer, how does that compare to the Form labs printers? I only have experience with the Form labs because that is what we had in the lab i use to work at.

I was wondering if there is a filament that I could use to print a plug for a mold that I could melt out like I do with wax. I've never heard of printing an object to make a mold before, and so have no idea if it's ever been done. The only reason I watched in was the Creality Ender 3 Pro. I use two for years. Mainboard of the first printer failed at around 2k hours of printing. Printer two still works perfect, after more than 4k hours of printing. I had not a single failure this whole year. The Ender 3 Pro needs minor mods - anything else is a waste of time & money - it's a relatively slow printer, but if all done right - it does exactly what it should.

Hi Matt, Great video. Is it possible to do a video just for the SLA printers? I got into the FDM printers a year ago (still pretty new in the industry). All I can say is that it has been a wild ride, going from the creality ender 3 to prusa mk3. Unfortunately, the ender 3 was too advance for me in terms of having to always tweak it which is why I LOVE my prusa mk3 because everything has been a smooth sailing and the print quality has never disappointed me. Now I want to get into SLA printing but there is no way I could justify buying the prusa SL1S bundle. Do you think I should wait for the price to come down and get a quality SLA printer? or is there a bundle that would be worth the price?

I have an ender 3 v2 and it was a good machine, I learned a lot from it, but sadly it pretty much broke down irreparably. Rn I have a prusa MK3 that I recently upgraded to a MK3s+, had it for almost 5 months, it's a tank, like you said, and I got it for only 500, 550 with the kit, only issue I have with it is cooling, ender was a bit better in that regard I think, so at some point I'll likely upgrade it to a dual fan setup, but other than that, I'm very very happy with it

Looking at more Prusa printer but so much is happening right now in the 3D printer market. Should I wait for the Creality and Bambu announcement before committing ? It was because of your enthusiasm for Prusa (and the LM show) that I bought them.

I'm currently in the market for a new 3D printer but with all the choices out there, which one would best fit my needs? I am looking to produce very large tall prints. I love the high detail of the resin printers but I do not like the chemicals or the limited size. This is probably a dumb question but I'll ask it anyway. Is there an extra large FDM printer that can produce the quality or close to it of a resin printer? If not, what filament would give the best results for minimizing layer lines? Which nozzle size gives the best detail again by limiting layer lines? What layer height also gives the best detail? Which slicing software is the one you would recommend depending on the printer type you suggest? I looked at Elegoo's Neptune 3 Max & 4 Max but I am hesitant to buy either. I also saw the Creality CR-10 S5 and the like and now I am more confused than ever. Please shed some light into the printer, filament and slicing software I should focus on, thank you.
@LoyalMoses
@LoyalMoses 3 ай бұрын
Elegoo, LulzBot, Raise3D all have great machines that are larger and produce great results - budget will really be a significant portion of the decision, more expensive when it comes to larger and more precision machines, is a real thing. Layer lines are a combination of machine precision, layer thickness and filament choice / tuning. Common visible layer lines are at .2mm while .1mm will make them nearly invisible unless you are looking for them (not noticeable). A smaller nozzle really only helps with top surface detail (width of the extrusion). Slicers, all slicers will be able to produce great results - this is very much preference or machine related. For instance, you might choose to use IdeaMaker because you bought Raide3D machines, or PrusaSlicer because you own a Prusa, etc.

Do you think I should get a Kobra 2 Max or a Bambu P1S (no ams) as my first printer? I want something really easy to use (which I know is better from bambu), large (better from the kobra 2 max), and fast (both). I'd ideally like to make large prints such as masks and helmets, which is why i'm considering the Kobra 2 Max but I really would like the benefits of an enclosure like the P1S has, like heating (for things like ABS), a filter, etc. as well as the hardened steel extruder assembly I could get for it.

I'm still sticking to my 2 choices - P1S Combo and K1 Max. As I said many times, I have until Nov. to buy 1. Now with the rumors of either Bambu providing an AMS that is compatible with other machines and Creality maaaybeee developing their own AMS, I may go for the K1 Max because of the volume, then buy whatever AMS will be available for it in the future. UNLESS, Bambu comes up with a 300-cubed printer that will be cheaper than a K1 Max and AMS before Nov. As for the machines you mentioned, most of the bedslingers until the "Max" volume should be a "No" as many companies already have a fast/Klipperized version that are about the same price as their older version. I think for now the Anycubic Kobra 2 Series are setting the prices for the "Neo" (beginners) "Pro", "Plus" and "Max" printers for others to match or beat.

@LoyalMoses Maybe I was a bit harsh with the "No's". If this video was made even 1 month ago, I think I would have agreed. I started with the Prusa i3 MK2S, then added an Ender 5 Plus, but both are now retired in favor of a P1S and an MK4. I'm not sure yet what will replace the Ender 5 Plus, as neither of my current printers can match its size. However, there's talk of the second generation of Bambu printers including larger models, so I'll wait and see. While I'm eyeing the XL from Prusa and considering the OrangeStorm Giga from Elegoo, Bambu could be intriguing if they go beyond 350mm, as Bambu loses significant build volume for certain shapes. But now to the point: Time is incredibly valuable to me, so time outweighs money. That's why I'm willing to invest in something a bit more expensive. I'm tired of spending time on Z offset and leveling; I'd rather spend that time with my family. As a technical draftsman, my printer is my tool, just like my circular saw. Do I build and repair my circular saw myself? No, because it's just a crappy tool, and I'm not a mechanic. So, that argument doesn't hold for me. Hence, Bambu and Prusa remain the better choice for me compared to cheap printers that need upgrades.😅

Interesting. Good video. Some of these I have never heard of before. Fookos, Wuxn, Kywoo, Kingroon, may be decent printers, but where will they be in 3 - 5 years? Raise 3D, Lulzbot, LDO Voron, too rich for my blood. I notice that all the printers that print their own parts are on the expensive side. A small-scale manufacturer would benefit from the cost effectiveness of printing their own parts, but large volume makers would be cheaper to have molded parts. I don't know what kind of volume someone like Prusa puts out per month. I don't have the same enthusiasm as you seem to for makers that print their own parts. And sad to for me to say this, but I was one that scored a K1 for $408, but regrettably had to cancel due to unforeseen expenses that came up.

I need dimensionally accurate prototype prints in materials like PP and PEEK. Are any of these printers able to reliably print in these kinds of materials? Or do I have to go with a far more expensive industrial option. I do engineering and design full time and don't have time to fiddle with printer issues for hours each day. Most of the info I'm finding on KZbin is more for PLA "toy" printing. I'm trying to expand my business capabilities to not have to outsource machine shops at high cost to build out multiple revisions of parts by printing my prototypes first. The problem is if the prints don't hold within a certain tolerance to the designs, then the print isn't as helpful as I'd hope. I'd like to be able to print some final parts in some some of those materials, too. Some of the first printers I was interested in was the ulimaker s7 pro or the method XL. But these are much more of an investment, and seeing how I haven't found videos of people recommending them, I didn't know if it was because they're overpriced or if they're just outside the scope of the typical 3d print hobbyists.

I just want printers that i can press print and know its going to work or stop itself if it fails to get a first layer. My MK3S printers are so hard to see that first layer when printing smaller parts, like the size of a benchy. I havent messed with the MK4 and doubt i will since i now own the BL X1CC. Love that its enclosed, good size though wish it was 300 cubed, and it has the automatic features. For me, no failures on mine yet. Im sure theyll happen at some point. But i dont want to own anything that doesnt have auto bed leveling, a camera to check on it periodically, and wifi enabled. Im updating the MK3S'es with a raspberry pi and octoprint. But not sure if I will keep them since getting the X1C. The X1C just has those extra features im missing in my older printers. That also includes Ender 3, Ender 5, Railcore, and Daedalas. Im thinking of having an everything must go sale even though they work fine... Lol.

@LoyalMoses

Thank you! You can it with both, depending on the nozzles size you have on the filament printer and the size of the prints you want to have. If you want small figurines, then resin would likely be a better choice.

forgive me but how can you recommend a fdm printer for 3000 plus?
@LoyalMoses

Great question! Have you ever used one? Do you believe there is a quality difference between a $99 and a $499 printer? If so, then you can understand the difference in quality, parts, support, user experience and more! Not all 3D printers are created equally, and there are clear differences in results, otherwise they wouldn’t be in business. I do appreciate the question!

I am having a problem with my Flash Forge Adventurer 3 and cannot find an answer anywhere. I am hoping you may know what is wrong. On start-up, the print head does go all the way to the right, but it sticks there and the noise it makes sounds like gears grinding and the head just continues to sit there. I am the only owner of a 3D printer in this town and there are literally NO repair people that can be found anywhere near here. Have you heard of an answer to this problem yet? If not, I can send a video if that will help you diagnose the problem?

G'day LM..... this was my first vid on your channel and iv given ya a sub👍. Im only a slight enthusiest....🤔 with a modded Ender3 v2 and a new addition, of a Kywoo Tycoon Max with copperhead heatbreak and a Vanadium Nozzle from Slice Enineering to make it a 300c machine, and in resin i have the Nova3D Whale 2 a mid size printer. and after this recent cybermonday i was able to picked up a long needed Elegoo Wash an cure Station. Im here in Australia and living on a Disability pension(due to mental health and back issues) and this creative part of 3d printing has helped me be a little more open by doing this and talking to people about printers/ing. Your perspective on a large set of printers for the yr has been informative, in some reviews its "Top 5" and not a real rep of the 3d printing companys out there🤔. Cheers ol son From A M8 Downunder🙃

I realy want to buy a P1S but resellers in Turkey are weird. P1S without AMS is cost 1150 US dollar and P1S with AMS cost 1600 dolar. Meanwhile K1 cost 700 and K1 Max cost 1000 US dollar. Also parts for bambu lab cost double the price of retail prices. What should i do ? Its gonna be my first printer.

I could just now buy a used Rais3D pro2 for a fraction of the price. Pricerange of a new full metal structure Voron 2.4. But looking online, I see many complaints, to the point of unusable. Need so many upgrades/mods to prevent the clogging and other issues. Now with your review, I'm confused.

Thinking for getting a "Prusa MK4 3D Printer kit" ($799.00)It seems to be a quality maching with good customer service. That's Important to me as this will be my 1st 3d printer. I don't want to get a 3d print have an issue.... Instructions not in english & no tech support.... Thoughts? Have you used this machine or have any feedback from others on this?
@LoyalMoses

I’ve not used a MK4, but I’ve no doubt it’s a fine machine and their support is great and can handle any issues that arise. If you want to build and tinker, then Prusa would be a great choice. If you want a turn key printer, then I’d recommend a Bambu P1S for $699.

MMM. I'm really new so if this is a Stupid question let me know.... @@HoldenTreasurethat only means the source code for the machine interface and / or desktop app is closed source, like 99% of the other applications run on computers, etc - both machines you will be able to download any models / projects you’d like and print them. If that’s what you were asking.

I ordered the MK4 with MMU3 and enclosure as my first printer. (Kit everything) I heard mixed things about Bambu. Their reliance on their cloud for firmware updates and encrypted log files you won't have access to were the biggest downsides to it. From the technical aspect, the Bambus may be the more current and better machines, but I'm fully for the open source world of Prusa.

@@LoyalMoses the biggest issue I see with Bambu is the very proprietary parts and the lack of security on their machines. I do agree that Prusa could offer a lower price, but I’d rather buy reliability and longevity over something new. But who knows what might happen with the A1.
