I like this idea that Hans Trapp isn't involved in disciplining naughty kids directly, but rather, like the Ghosts of A Christmas Carol, his own past suffering is just so impactful that it's generally accepted he convinces the wayward to reform themselves with words of genuine concern alone. Since it seems he leave no sign, I bet it's possible for kids to imagine that those he visits would never tell -- he silently reforms children yearly, helping other kids to forgive moral grievances with their peers in time for Christmas, since they can hope for a new start to such relationships in the new year.

It's absolutely an oversight not to mention that the Zwate Piet character comes with controversy. Zwarte Piet is Santa's black slave, who often serves the role of punishing children, while Santa rewards them. Contemporary people have tried to cast him as simply Santa's friend, but this is such a fundamental reinvention and such a dodge of the inherent racism involved that, I at least would argue that this is a blackface character we should leave in the past, explaining it for what it is to children and others whenever it comes up.
