23 October 2023… Workbench Session… Lighting Upgrade Project on 40+ year old OO Hornby Class 29

Hi Everyone…. If you watched my last video about lighting upgrades on my older locos, specifically my old class 45. You may remember me mentioning that I lost the video footage of that project, and promising to do a similar directional light upgrade and video on an old Hornby Class 29 to make up for the loss..
Well l opened my big mouth without first assessing the job 🤣
The loco is 40+ years old and was a non runner when I got it a couple of years ago. I stripped it down and got it running sweetly again with the help of a service and clean,plus new springs and brushes.
It is technically very basic, no lights (just plastic moulding representing lights), or any modern electronics.
Tho loco sports a ring field motor and that’s it. It’s mostly fresh air inside that bodyshell …..Except for where I needed to fit the lights 🙄🙄.
The required space was taken up by the glazing bar and the cab moulding.
So as usual I was determined not to be beaten by such things, l got my cutting, drilling and soldering head on and got stuck in..

Hi Kieth … Thanks for watching and Happy New Year to you too 👍 I got the bulbs online from a site called Rapid Electronics. The last time I checked they were out of stock of the 12v version but that was a while ago. Be careful you don’t order the 5v ones by mistake, like I nearly did 🤣 Regards…. Steve 👍

Hi Steve. Awesome video! There are some very handy tips there and I have to say you have some very nice skills! It makes me want to do mine now lol. I only have an old (but precious to me) Lima Deltic 55003 'Meld' (all other loco's are steam) but I reckon it would look awesome with directional lighting :D Plus like you I have none of the DXX Malarkey. Did one of those diesel loco's a few years ago, it is fairly straightforward, and I used grain of rice bulbs with small diodes. Good luck.😊

Nice one, good job as not the easiest conversion, at least Hornby did put lights in the 25, Which we thought was the Dogs back in the Day, Lol.I have found some smd dcc boards with lighting built in which could be used DC DCC from the site we were discussing, at GETs saturday night.

Hi Steve, This was a master video on how to do this in a very old loco with not a pcb board in sight so well done sir this deserves a good number of views I think and if not there is no justice left. Hope you have dryed out and recovered from GETS and my next video is a visit to a smaller show that was great and the cherry on top was a visit to a YT'ers layout. Hi Mark… Sorry I haven’t got back to you sooner…. Thanks for watching…The lights are from Rapid Electronics on line. Just be careful you don’t accidentally order the 5v version. But they do all sorts of stuff that us modellers love to fiddle with🤣
