So my question is did you change your mind about potting up in potting mix in the house oh I also potted up some flowers in potting mix. I thought if you pour boiling water in seed starting mix that it should work for potting mix as well right or wrong? Thanks for another super useful video! QUESTION: Gary when I closed my beds last year I added 3 inches of shredded leaves. I was hoping they'd break down but they did NOT. I intended on removing then adding back as mulch after planting. However today I mistakenly added my amended soil on top of the leaves on all my 7 beds. Yikes! About 3 inches of amended soil. Is this going to be a problem with plants and seeds? Should I try to sift out the leaves? Thank You in advance!

@THERUSTEDGARDEN5 жыл бұрын
Depends on temp. At 70 degrees F the both seem to pop in 5-10 days. A heating mat gets peppers to pop quickly too. If you temps are between 60 and 70 F, that seems long for tomatoes. Gary, I'm an old time gardener in southern Ohio. I've recently started plants inside. I use a fan along with lights but some cells get a white fuzzy mold on top. I use sterile seed starter and no fertilizer. There will only be a few cells that acquire this mold. What would you suggest? A spritz of hydrogen peroxide mix maybe? I am at a loss since there are many cells in the tray but only a few are developing this. Hope it's harmless.

Hydrogen peroxide is what I have used, 8 tablespoons per 1 gallon, but you can add up to 12 tablespoons, I also have used neem oil I ordered from Gary, he has the real stuff and not the crap your local stores sell! I actually put holes above the water line in bigger pots it’s kinda lazy but I still have to pay attention, it is gardening lol have you ever did this with your 1 gallon pots? I bottom water and haven’t had any issues except for the powdered mildew. I have holes above where the water line will set, so will that help with wiking ? Any advice will help man thank you. 🙏 p.s. sun shines in during the day but not direct that’s why I use the lights to keep cycle in February also I live in Pennsylvania. I think the mildew started a month ago so going to try spraying your baking soda mix.

I just received some of the red burgundy onion seeds from your seed shop (23 October). I didn't realize they were short day onions. I was reading that you can plant the seeds in the fall to over winter. Is it too late, can I put seeds in the ground now? With my garlic I planted a few weeks ago?Central PA, Zone 6a. I am planning to buy 24" x 48" metal shelving like you have. Have you considered putting rollers on your shelves? I'm new to gardening. My seedlings always died, about two or three weeks after they grew their one set of leaves. Not sure the reason why. Probably because I used cheap soil? I also don't have growing light(leave them by the window) but sometimes I put them under my USB LED light, especially when they became leggy. It worked but then their stem would slowly turn purple and died. Getting low and high light intensity on and off, could that be the problem? And if I do get the growing light, for how many days I should leave my seedling under the light?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN4 жыл бұрын
Not sure the reason but you can move them in and outside if it is over 40. That helps a lot. They grow and germinate slower but love the sun. Gary, I’m starting some seeds this year, thanks for the help and inspiration. I’m using a shed and had temp that were to low so I built a styrofoam room 6x6 for temp control. My question is stagnant air, do I need an exhaust fan to run intermittently to change the air? I don’t think temp will be a problem as long as I run the fan in the afternoons. Thanks Whit
@atanisoftware5 жыл бұрын
I would definitely suggest ventilation of some sort. Plants, like humans, thrive in fresh air and moderate humidity. When starting seeds using a higher humidity can help germination time but soon after the seeds break the surface it is recommended to lower the humidity (ie: remove the humidity done).

I am trying to get an answer from you so I am asking the same questions after many of your videos in hopes you will answer me. In your KZbin Planting Beans as transplants: A strategy for Rabbits & insect: you discussed using Vermisterra Worm Casting in sterilized premoistened starting soil for pots to start seeds in. My question is. because of existing nitrogen, does this work for seed starting pole green beans?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN4 жыл бұрын
Yes it will work fine for beans. Most seeds just live off their seed coat for a bit. Castings are great to add but you dont have too. I like to add it. Beans are hardy too so you could even start them in larger container in potting mix. The bigger the seed they better they deal with things. Please visit my seed and garden shop www.therustedgarden.com for all your seeds, seed starting needs, neem & peppermint oil and more. Thanks!

I did buy Vermisterra worm castings and Vermisterra worm casting tea on Amazon and used THERUSTEDGARDEN code, but the code did not get work. I am not concerned about the 10% discount; I did not know if I used it on Amazon if it was meant to work or even if I did it correctly, or my 77-year-old brain just can not always figure out this new way to shop. Love your stuff (I watch them all!), but your Kelvin rating advice is not entirely accurate. Warm white (lower than 5000K) actually causes fast plant growth. Citation: journals.ashs.org/hortsci/view/journals/hortsci/48/4/article-p504.xml There are trade offs, though. Cool white creates very compact growth, which obvs can be desirable. It is, however, at the cost of speed, which can be good for seedlings.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN5 жыл бұрын
Thanks. That is with LED lights and intense lumens. The article makes sense but for non LED lights with Kelvin below 5000K, you normally dont even get enough Lumens to have an experiment. Maybe in the future Ill go over the LED color spectrum with high lumens. PAR value too is becoming more popular with LEDs.
