Those rollers : I don't know about everyone else's situation, but my local hardware store has nylon spacers that can probably be swapped in. They are very accurate, more so than a 3D printer anyway. Thanks for sharing another amazing build! 🙏

Thanks for the heads up on the rollers being difficult in TPU; I have black rubber stoppers, standard lab stuff, maybe I can use those and some already have a hole nicely put through the center. 🙂

Friction modifiers are commonplace in motorcycle oils where the clutch and gearbox are combined, sharing the motor oil.

Honey is not such a bad choice, it lasts forever and gets thinner the hotter it gets. Just don't think of it as a lubricant, one day you might accidently lick your finger after an oil change on your car....

You could probably use the fingers of a rubber glove to give you a thin layer around the rollers with a bit more grip. That system looks a lot easier to make at home too!

don't know if it's just me but, there is a limit to just how much torque those friction surfaces can hold and if you increase their hold-ability then in turn become more like sandpaper hence wearing out the contact surfaces much quicker, with something like a windmill that is running almost constantly I would imagine this wouldn't hold up long.

had an idea for making a auto-brake for a wind turbine to prevent runaway. Using a non-Newtonian fluid, so that the faster it moves, the more viscus it gets. Thought it might be interesting. Especially if you are using something like a Ping-Pong ball to float in it.

The O.D. of plastic pipe is held to tight tolerances to mate with the fitting hubs. Instead of printing the rollers, maybe design the drive around short sections of pipe?

Would there be a slippage in both the plastic and metal devices? Gears do have backlash, but essentially no slippage.

it s insane, I made one today (failed for 3 weeks to do compound version, tried various techniques), actually PLA is better for this. It compressed just the right anount, I made a 1:45 compound ration that runs on a 2euros stepper ... EDIT I forgot to mention that you need a non newtonian grease for it to be fully backdrivable, I used corn stach water and oil to increase static torque

@wibblywobblyidiotvision

Hello Robert. Anything relying on elasticity to maintain contact is going to have enormous losses compared to a gear or chain drive, a large amount of energy goes into squashing those rollers, and unless you're specifically designing to recover some of that energy as they return to their unsquished form, it's lost. The Nuvinci ebike drive is hideously ineffecient next to a comparable gear drive unit (I believe the difference is close to an order of magnitude), but that's a relatively low priority compared to the flexibility a CVT gives to an ebike.
@yasirrakhurrafat1142
@yasirrakhurrafat1142 2 ай бұрын
But wouldn't they not really lose quite that much? As they're not being let to return to their original form, they're just rolling. I'm almost betting rotating those squishies 360°s by moving the sun or ring, requires less energy. Than squishing them from their base form, to the squished form.

@yasirrakhurrafat1142
@yasirrakhurrafat1142 2 ай бұрын
@@darkfrei2 oh, very complicated. But how with just one extruder, youd need tpu (squishy rollers) as well as hard materials abs , pla , hdpe or sumthing printing at the same time. Would likely be easier to split and assemble the ring gear and assemble it afterwards somehow.

You typed too quickly. It's Nu-Vinci. Regardless I have an ebike with one in it. I love it, it is super, but the losses compared to a direct chain drive are immense. Circa 15% against circa 1.5%. When on holiday and I hire a conventional bike, the difference is very noticeable, with the standard bike showing significantly more torque at similar ratios.
