Until relatively recent times, this is what getting a college education was like: you'd sit there in a large hall, listening week after week to a series of long lectures on various topics, delivered by erudite scholars. While none of the subjects may have been relevant to what you ended up doing for a living, you emerged from the college experienced as an educated lady or gentleman, and that education gave you an immensely broad context from which to view the world and thus to address the challenges that arose in you given profession.

Good observation, Mona ! For another good, historical ' read '. Google / download '' 10 Books on Architecture, " by a man named Vitruvius. Another very good , rounded view of an architect ; needing to know ' music ' , art, geography, climate and the weather environments, and most important, GEOMETRY . Alot more than todays' narrow field of expertise . Take care, of all within your power !. (old guy)

Julius Caesar never disliked Alexander...the opposite he was very found of him! So, when Caesar read about Alexander’s life, he burst into tears. Perhaps the more ambitious of us ought to cry with him. “His friends were surprised, and asked him the reason of it. ‘Do you think,’ said he, ‘I have not just cause to weep, when I consider that Alexander at my age had conquered so many nations, and I have all this time done nothing that is memorable?’”

WHY DON'T YOU GO LEARN MACEDONIAN! [1] "Neither Greeks nor Macedonians considered the Macedonians to be Greeks." [2] On the composition of Alexander's army: "Thus we look in vain for the evidence that Alexander was heavily dependent upon Greeks either in quantity or quality." [3] "The pattern is clear: the trend toward the end of the king's life was to install Macedonians in key positions at the expense of Asians, and to retain very few Greeks." [4] "The conclusion is inescapable: there was a largely ethnic Macedonian imperial administration from beginning to end. Alexander used Greeks in court for cultural reasons, Greek troops (often under Macedonian commanders) for limited tasks and with some discomfort, and Greek commanders and officals for limited duties. Typically, a Greek will enter Alexander's service from an Aegean or Asian city through the practice of some special activity: he could read and write, keep figures or sail, all of which skills the Macedonians required. Some Greeks may have moved on to military service as well. In other words, the role of Greeks in Alexander's service was not much different from what their role had been in the services of Xerxes and the third Darius." [5] On the policy of hellenization with Alexander conquest of Asia and the Greek assertion that he spread Hellenism: "If one wishes to believe that Alexander had a policy of hellenization - as opposed to the incidental and informal spread of Greek culture - the evidence must come from sources other than those presented here. One wonders - archeology aside - where this evidence would be." On the ethnic tension between Macedonians and Greeks, referring to the episode of Eumenes of Cardia and his bid to reach the throne: "And if there were any doubt about the status of Greeks among the Macedonians the tragic career of Eumenes in the immediate Wars of succession should put it to rest. The ancient sources are replete with information about the ethnic prejudice Eumenes suffered from Macedonians." [6] On the issue of whether Alexander and Philip "united" the Greek city-states or conquered them: "In European Greece Alexander continued and reinforced Philip II's policy of rule over the city-states, a rule resulting from conquest." [7] "The tension at court between Greeks and Macedonians, tension that the ancient authors clearly recognized as ethnic division." [8] On Alexander's dimissal of his Greek allies: "A few days later at Ecbatana, Alexander dismissed his Greek allies, and charade with Greece was over." [9] On the so called Dorian invasion: The theory of the Dorian invasion (based on Hdt. 9.26, followed by Thuc. I.12) is largely an invention of nineteenth-century historography, and is otherwise unsupported by either archeological or linguistic evidence." [10] "The Dorians are invisible archeologically." [11] "There is no archeological record of the Dorian movements, and the mythic arguments are largely conjectural, based on folk traditions about the Dorian home originally having been in northwest Greece. [12] "The explanation for the connection between the Dorians and the Macedonians may be more ingenious than convincing, resting uncomfortably on myth and conjecture." [13] On the Macedonian own tradition and origin: "As the Macedonians settled the region following the expulsion of existing peoples, they probably introduced their own customs and language(s); there is no evidence that they adopted any existing language, even though they were now in contact with neighboring populations who spoke a variety of Greek and non-Greek tongues." [14] On the Macedonian language: "The main evidence for Macedonian existing as separate language comes from a handful of late sources describing events in the train of Alexander the Great, where the Macedonian tongue is mentioned specifically." [15] "The evidence suggests that Macedonian was distinct from ordinary Attic Greek used as a language of the court and of diplomacy." [16] "The handful of surviving genuine Macedonian words - not loan words from Greek - do not show the changes expected from Greek dialect." [17] On the Macedonian material culture being different from the Greek: "The most visible expression of material culture thus far recovered are the fourth - and third-century tombs. The architectural form, decoration, and burial goods of these tombs, which now number between sixty and seventy, are unlike what is found in the Greek south, or even in the neighboring independent Greek cities of the north Aegean littoral (exception Amphipolis). Macedonian burial habits suggest different view of the afterlife from the Greeks', even while many of the same gods were worshipped." [18] "Many of the public expressions of worship may have been different." [19] "There is an absence of major public religious monuments from Macedonian sites before the end of the fourth century (another difference from the Greeks)." [20] "Must be cautious both in attributing Greek forms of worship to the Macedonians and in using these forms of worship as a means of confirming Hellenic identity." [21] "In brief, one must conclude that the similarities between some Macedonian and Greek customs and objects are not of themselves proof that Macedonians were a Greek tribe, even though it is undeniable that on certain levels Greek cultural influences eventually became pervasive." [22] "Greeks and Macedonians remained steadfastly antipathetic toward one another (with dislike of a different quality than the mutual long-term hostility shared by some Greek city-states) until well into the Hellenic period, when both the culmination of hellenic acculturation in the north and the rise of Rome made it clear that what these peoples shared took precedence over their historical enmities." [23] "They made their mark not as a tribe of Greek or other Balkan peoples, but as 'Macedonians'. This was understood by foreign protagonists from the time of Darius and Xerxes to the age of Roman generals." [24] "It is time to put the matter of the Macedonians' ethnic identity to rest." [25] "There is other aspect of Alexander's Greek policy, and that is his formal relationship with the Greek cities of Europe and Asia. In European Greece Alexander continued and reinforced Philip II's policy rule over the city-states, a rule resulting from conquest. As for the island Greeks and the cities of Asia Minor, their status under the reigns of Philip and Alexander has been much debated. Fortunately, for my purposes, the status of these cities, whether as members of Philip's panhellenic league or as independent towns, is not crucial, as they were in fact all treated by Alexander as subjects. Much of the debate on this issue, while interesting and occasionally enlightening, has sometimes obscured a simple reality: Greeks on both sides of the Aegean were subjects to the authority of the king of Macedon." Ethnicity and Cultural Policy at Alexander's Court. Makedonika [26] "I have not cited several pieces of anecdotal evidence from the sources on Alexander that establish the continuing tension at court between Greeks and Macedonians, tension that the ancient authors clearly recognized as ethnic division. A fuller version of this study will consider these incidents to support my view that Greeks and Macedonians did not get along very well with one another and that this ethnic tension was exploited by the king himself." Makedonika p.158 [27] "What did others say about Macedonians? Here there is a relative abundance of information", writes Borza, "from Arrian, Plutarch (Alexander, Eumenes), Diodorus 17-20, Justin, Curtius Rufus, and Nepos (Eumenes), based upon Greek and Greek-derived Latin sources. It is clear that over a five-century span of writing in two languages representing a variety of historiographical and philosophical positions the ancient writers regarded the Greeks and the Macedonians as two separate and distinct peoples whose relationship was marked by considerable antipathy, if not outright hostility."

Etymology of the name Thessaloniki, Makedonia ,Greece: The city was founded by Kassander and it was named in honour of his Wife, Thessaloniki, half sister of Alexander the Great & daughter of Philip II & 5th wife of Princess of Thessalia; Composite of words "Thessalians" & "Nike" (victory), to commemorate the victory of the Macedonians & the Thessalians against the tyranny of Feres and their allies, Phocis.

Just to be clear, there was no such thing as a unified Greece of the time as it exists in our present time, but all city states were ethnically Hellenic. Any talk of Macedonians not being Hellenic is absurd. They were considered "non-Greek" by the standards of the Athenians who considered themselves culturally superior compared to any other city state. In-fighting has unfortunately been a part of Greek history which continues even today, but have no doubt of the Hellenism of Macedonia. For example, Sparta and Athens were at war with each other for years, yet one is not less Hellenic than the other.

The Macedonians were themselves Greeks who were the buffer state of the Greek world that had retained its Homeric Style kingdom. The southern Greeks thought of them as a backwater prior to their rise to prominence in the Greek world. Chaeronea had two opposing sides, a) the Greeks led by the Athenians and b) the Greeks led by the Macedonians as both sides were comprised of all Greeks depending on who had what alliances. Macedonia did not confront the 'Greeks' any more than the Spartans confronted the 'Greeks' at Coronea. Demosthenes warned Athens because Athens, like Thebes and like Sparta did not want another State to rule over them or take first place among the Greek states above them. The taking of hegemony over the rest of the Greek states was always bloody. Any future 'revolts' were no different to the revolt of Athens against Sparta etc. Overall a great vid. Thank you.

Not at all marvellous. The consensus of scholars is that the Book of Daniel was compiled in 167-164 BCE. It doesn't appear in the Hebrew Bible, dated to 200 BCE, but is referenced in several works from the middle of the 2nd century BCE onwards. To the book's anonymous author, his prophecies were simply a matter of history, written to support the Apocalyptic Judaism of his day.

He was forced by his own troops to stop the war of expansion eastwards. His surviving Macedonians were exhausted after ten years of campaigning and wanted to see their homes and their families again; they didn't want to have achieved all that they did but won no reward for themselves. Having turned back, Alexander spent his final year in Persia, very probably drinking himself to death, or at least weakening himself so much that he fell prone to several diseases in that period. He had an ambition to launch a new campaign south into Arabia but his primary means of achieving it was much lessened, so to suggest that he would have had any way, if he hadn't died, of starting a new war in the west and being as successful there as in the east, is speculative at best.

Issus and Gaugemela went about the same. You could.use the fresco of the battle of issus and interchange it with Gaugemela. In both cases the battle ended when Alexander got close enough to Darius to throw a spear at him. Missing barely in both cases. Darius really was in a position to cut of Alexander and his companion cavalry in both cases. Had Darius not fled at issus he probably would have been able to kill Alexander. Same at gaugemela. Darius was a tragic figure. He deserved a better death and Alexander did him justice by punishing his betrayers, adopting his family and burying him as a king. Demosthenes, the Athenian politician, was not the General in charge of the Athenian army. He was, however largely responsible for bringing the Athenian envoy to Thebes to join forces against the menace of Philip II (who entrusted his 18 year old son, Alexander to the left wing...with (and protected by) his best generals and commanders and the Companion Cavalry). A general named Stratocles led the Athenian left. The Theban Sacred Band held the right against the Macedonian army. Alexander certainly had his hands full and was noted for an exemplary performance on the battlefield that day, but it was Philip's victory. Demosthenes was the most virulent anti-Macedon proponent of his day though. Has this guy ever even read a book on the era?

The Greeks at the time disagreed though now they're happy to claim him. His hair and eye color suggests a Celtic bloodline and there has been some speculation that the Macedonians were celts displaced by Germania tribes and forced south into thracian territory were they came out the better over the thracians though both peoples never stopped fighting eachother for long.

The Macedonians are fellow Greeks, Athens and Macedonia is a heated rivalry in my country born from Phillip II and Alexander the Great's time. Sure there were Greeks who hated Alexander who he imprisoned and slaved but Alexander spread our culture and civilization and ideas for the main reason he was Greek, and the proudest Greek of us all, he wasn't Vardarska Slav. Giannis Batziolas you are right. The ancient Greeks and the Greek cites had many infights. The Athenians called for example Spartans Barbarians not because they were not Greek but because just they wanted to Insult them. The same goes for Macedonia. It's the first story in book 2 of the Hermes Trismegistu (thrice great Thoth) - It's not very long but very interesting relative to scripture (enoch) - It's one of the Egyptian creation stories less known. Most likely related to the Egyptian God Ptah (the creator god) - who brought forth the world with the word (Logos) - you can get book two from here - archive.org/search.php?query=Thrice%20Greatest%20Hermes - Volume 2 by G.R.S Mead. Macedonia wasn’t and never belonged to the Hellenic/Greek city states. Macedonia was separate state and kingdom. Macedonia conquered the Hellenic city states and united the city states to conquer the Persian Empire. There is a clear difference between Macedonia and the Greek city states. Any Greece as such never existed and Hellas is a completely different region than Macedonia and again Macedonia was a state/kingdom. You should know the difference.

Kirili Barvalos WRONG!!! They were always Greeks & they claimed it themselves: "There are Greek troops, to be sure, in Persian service - but how different is their cause from ours! They will be fighting for pay - and not much of it at that; we, on the contrary, shall fight for GREECE, and our HEARTS will be in it. As for our FOREIGN troops - Thracians, Paeonians, Illyrians, Agrianes - they are the best and stoutest soldiers in Europe, and they will find as their opponents the slackest and softest of the tribes of Asia. And what, finally, of the two men in supreme command? You have Alexander, they - Darius! -Alexander the Great "Alexander, son of Philip and the Greeks, save the Lacedaimonians, set up these spoils from the barbarians dwelling in Asia." -Alexander the Great "Your ancestors came to Macedonia and the REST of GREECE and did us great harm, though we had done them no prior injury. I have been appointed leader of the GREEKS, and wanting to punish the Persians I have come to Asia, which I took from you." -Alexander the Great "But as things are, forgive me Diogenes, that I imitate Herakles, and emulate Perseus, and follow in the footsteps of Dionysos, the divine author and progenitor of my family, and desire that victorious GREEKS should dance again in India and revive the memory of the Bacchic revels among the savage mountain tribes beyond the Kaukasos.." -Alexander the Great Youths of the Pellaians and of the Macedonians and of the Hellenic Amphictyony and of the Lakedaimonians and of the Corinthians… and of all the Hellenic peoples, join your fellow-soldiers and entrust yourselves to me, so that we can move against the barbarians and liberate ourselves from the Persian bondage, for as Greeks we should not be slaves to barbarians. -Alexander the Great "Tell your king (Xerxes), who sent you, how his GREEK viceroy of Macedonia has received you hospitably." -Alexander I "For I (Alexander I) myself am by ancient descent a Greek and I would not willingly see Hellas change her freedom for slavery." -Alexander I "Such was the end of Philip (II, king of Macedonia) ...He had ruled 24 years. He is known to fame as one who with but the slenderest resources to support his claim to a throne won for himself the greatest empire among the GREEKS, while the growth of his position was not due so much to his prowess in arms as to his adroitness and cordiality in diplomacy." -Diodoros Siculus "This is a sworn treaty made between us, Hannibal ... and Xenophanes the Athenian ... in the presence of all the gods who possess Macedonia and the REST of Greece ." -Hannibals Treaty [Polybius The Histories] "Macedonia, of course, is a part of Greece." -Strabo "However, for a very long time the Aetolians, together with the Acarnanians, stood firm, not only against the Macedonians and the OTHER GREEKS, but also finally against the Romans, when fighting for autonomy." -Strabo "He did this to lift the yoke from Israel, for it was obvious that the kingdom of the GREEKS was subjecting them to slavery." -Josephus (Mac) "And there came out of them a wicked root Antiochus surnamed Epiphanes, son of Antiochus the king, who had been an hostage at Rome, and he reigned in the hundred and thirty and seventh year of the kingdom of the GREEKS." -Josephus (Mac) Shall I pass by and leave you lying there because of the expedition you led against Greece, or shall I set you up again because of your magnanimity and your virtues in other respects? -Plutarch Now you fear punishment and beg for your lives, so I will let you free, if not for any other reason so that you can see the difference between a Greek king and a barbarian tyrant, so do not expect to suffer any harm from me. -Alexander the Great "Yauna Takabara" in Persian referring to the Greeks wearing the Shield Hats (Kausia) that the Macedonians specifically wore. -Persians “He inflicted punishment on the Persians for their outrages on all the Greeks, and how he delivered us all from the greatest evils by enslaving the barbarians and depriving them of the resources they used for the destruction of the Greeks, pitting now the Athenians and now the Thebans against the ancestors of these Spartans, how in a word he made Asia subject to Greece. -Polybius For if all the wars which we have carried on against the Greeks are to be despised, then let the triumph of Marcus Curius over king Pyrrhus be derided; and that of Titus Flamininus over Philip; and that of Marcus Fulvius over the Aetolians; and that of Lucius Paullus over king PERSES; and that of Quintus Metellus over the false PHILIP; and that of Lucius Mummius over the Corinthians. -Marcus Tullius Cicero "The empire of Greece belonged to the Athenians, the Athenians were overpowered by the Spartans, Spartans were overcome by the Thebans the Thebans were conquered by the Macedonians and the Macedonians in a short time subdued Asia in a war and joined her to the empire of Greece." -Marcus Tullius Cicero “Then your rivals in the struggle for supremacy and renown were the Achaeans and Macedonians, peoples of your own race, and Philip was their commander. But now Greece is threatened with a war against men of a foreign race who intend to enslave her, 8 men whom you fancy you are calling in against Philip, but are calling in really against yourselves and the whole of Greece.” -Polybius “For in their anxiety to get the better of Philip and humiliate the Macedonians, they have without knowing it invoked such a cloud from the west as may, perhaps, at first only cast its shadow on Macedonia, but in time will be the cause of great evil to all Greece.” -Polybius "Such, at all events, were the opinions generally entertained in the reign of Alexander III the Great, at a time when Greece was at the height of her glory, and the most powerful country in the world." -Pliny the Elder PS...your name is Greek today because of the very Fact that the Macedonians spread the Greek Language all over the Ancient World, and the New Testament was written in that Language. When the Byzantines fucked up your Bulgayrian Ancestors and poked your eyes out, you eventually submitted to Christianity... Thus your name: Kirili (Gypsy Bulgay transliteration) comes from the original Greek = Kyrillos, which it actually means something in 🤓 Read & Cry Now: www.behindthename.com/name/cyril Bye now little insignificant Tartaro Bulgay shitstain...🤓🖕🤣
