Aw Cam, I had actually typed my question out in that Q&A space, but deleted it and stopped myself from posting it. I had wanted to ask this: How would one get themselves back to working towards a goal or part of a goal, when the immediate reaction, for whenever it doesn't go as well as they'd anticipate, is to spiral/self-criticize, or be too hard on oneself?

Definitely would love to see an updated video on “The Wall”. It’s a technique I’ve used, but I’m always looking for refinements. Congratulations on the amazing growth! I’ve been following you since pretty early on, through the stumbles and changes, and I’m truly happy for your success. Thanks for all the inspiration, on to 2 mil!

If you can't separate different spaces, one of the hacks I've used is a virtual commute. Go out for a walk around the block like you're going to work so you can arrive at work, then once you're done with work, walk around the block in the opposite direction to separate the work portion of your day. Also gives you a moment to think and reflect.

"Nothing changes if nothing changes" is the advice that's hit me the most. It's so easy to get caught up in the late night woes about your feelings of stagnation and inadequacy. This saying really clicked in my brain that the way to change things is to change things. Doesn't need to be big, but making an effort to make something change will snowball from just doing the dishes to complete career/personality changes.

"Any action is better than inaction." Which sort of plays into the fail faster principle. The longer you dwell in indecision or procrastination the longer nothing changes. It's easy to forget you have control over your actions in life although of course some people have less autonomy in their own lives and other major challenges that are incomprehensible to me. But in mine own life, this rings all too true. If you don't take the consistent even small actions to change your situation nothing will change.

Why am I watching? Your perspective is happily communicated, your life experience is relatable, your smile is contagious. I have enjoyed watching you mature and develop as a person. I always feel encouraged after watching one of your chats. This became especially important after I became a widow in 2022. You always have the underlying message of "take a breath, pick yourself up, and get back at it." We all need to hear that from time to time.

For the office thing, I use one of those smartbulb/lighting things. They are not very expensive but work well in changing the vibe of the room. White light = work, pink or purple light= creative life.

I agree with this point. I do most of my activities in my room, but I use a specific dim light for relaxing or creative time and bright lights for studying, so that rlly helps.

Watched everything you’ve made since 2020. In proper Struthless style, Here’s my top (totally unasked for) reflections of your content! 1. You always made an effort to talk about ability level, making disclaimers for those who maybe don’t have full physical ability. As a disabled person who became disabled after perusing a career in art THANK YOU. The validation is unmatched. The consideration is unreal. I’ve never seen or heard any other creative/creator or anyone else ever do this. It’s the first time I’ve felt “seen”. Like I/we exist too. Amazing. I could, infact am, slightly crying about it 😢 2. That one video where you talk about how turning around the worst thing in your life that ever happened (even if it’s super bad)… was a revelation. It’s started me on a real journey. I now feel like I’ve had a “full” life I wouldn’t swap rather than an atrocious and unfortunate life riddled with nightmares that made me feel trapped and depressed. 3. Your relatability for actually talking about drugs and addictions and death and awful trauma. I don’t even know how to use my words properly enough to convey how effing important this is. And how rare you are for doing it. Again, appreciation doesn’t cut it 4. The pragmatism. You’ve always fascilitated growth by giving tangible ways to achieve it. Stuck? Draw a bin chicken in a different style for a year! Of course! 5. The humility. And authenticity. Again; unreal, unmatched, beyond needed. Please don’t stop. 6. The gate…. Opening?! Is that a thing. The opposite of gatekeeping is what I mean. You make creative careers look possible to people who might otherwise think it’s not. 7. The quality of your creative content; your writing, your illustration, your presenting, your educating, your editing. You are a polymath of creativity and the quality of your output is really magical. Thanks Struthless, Mr Campbell, I really appreciate it a lot 🖤

For the addiction question (as someone who dealt with it from a family member, and am now 21 days weed-free) this is what helps me: 1. When I feel a craving, I tell myself, "Okay, well today you WANT to smoke, but how about this, you can smoke tomorrow if you stay sober today" - then when tomorrow rolls around, I repeat the same mantra, and essentially trick myself to never taking that smoke. 2. If the above doesn't work, I reframe my sobriety goal. It's not "I shouldn't smoke" or "I can't smoke" or "I won't smoke today" it's "I am NOT a smoker.", "I am NOT a person who enjoys smoking.", "I don't like to smoke." This reframing allows me to see myself as not the person I want to be, but the person that I am already - a non-smoker. Works for me, might work for you. It's a day-at-a-time thing. You go this.
@melissagibson4364

I smoked weed for 5 years 3 straight (everyday all day) and the one that changed everything for me is practicing saying no. At first I hid all my smoke stuff, threw the weed away. But I couldn’t throw the weed in my head away. So I took it all out and would trigger myself often through out the day just for the opportunity to say no. Now I can’t smoke without a ton of negative feelings coming up, guilt, fear, shame, etc and saying no is second nature.

I heard that you should phrase affirmations positive always (so "not" and "don't" are off the menu, and you try to rephrase) because the brain doesn't process that, and so it makes "I am a smoker" out of it for example. Like when you say "dont go into that puddle" to the kid with the bike and guess what the kid will do.. Because the brain creates like an image or scenario out of it and negatives can't be included.. idk take it or leave it, just wanted to share that bit

What has helped me through addictions is trying to turn it into a positive habit. So every time I got the urge or want to do the thing I was addicted to, I told myself to do 5 pushups instead. If I still had the urge do 5 more, and repeat. Then in my brain it turned quitting a negative habit/addiction into a positive habit. I was addicted to porn, spend 4-5 times a day watching, now I haven't watched for a couple of months and I have started working out continuously. The urge comes up now and then, but I just put some music in my ears and hit the gym instead. I know this might not work for everyone, but for me it just gave me sooo much extra time in a day. Before I did not have enough time to work on my hobbies and side hustles, and now I almost have too much time in my day to day life. I did also do as you and just gaslighted myself into believing that I don't watch that shit and here I am, as a better man with more time to do the things that in the future could help me financially and career wise

I know nobody gives a shit but I just wanted to say that I was here when you had around 10k subscribers and I'm very happy for you. You've come a long way in a lot of ways and are a great role model. There are a lot of self-help resources out there, but the biggest thing that makes me gravitate to yours is that you keep it real. The genuine oozes out of you. Keep being you, by keeping at improving but being real and self aware. I firmly believe that the first step to improvement is self awareness. A lot of people confuse self-awareness for the voice in our head that is either overly critical or making excuses for ourselves. Being real is always questioning those things and trying to find the middle ground. Thanks, pal. Be well!

For me, separating myself from my art came naturally once I started outputting much larger amounts of ideas. I had to create 10, 20, 100 sketches to be critiqued in order to pick the best one to continue with. In this situation it is impossible to get too attached to any one idea, and the critique is a natural part of making that idea the best it can be. Here I also compare myself only with myself, so it becomes less of a “am i good or bad?” and more of a “which version of my work is best?”

Just 1 day at a time. Took me a year sober to wrap my head around this. Sometimes I repeat to myself 1 hour or even 1 minute at a time if I'm in a real tough spot. Keeps you in the moment instead of the past or future. It's actually quite nice. I made it to 2 years today. These videos are just a great reminder of what I've been working so hard on the past two years. Thanks Struthless

The work/creativity struggle when they're both computer-based and you WFH is real. Thoughts: - coloured lighting, incense, etc. for creative time - get a standing desk. a lot of the struggle I feel is just back pain. also can use it to signal energy shifts sometimes (e.g. stand up when I want to be focused) - transition ceremonies - get out of the house and active to finish the work day and put a line under it till tomorrow - invest in hardware. this was my approach, I didn't even try learning music production on a computer, I knew it would drive me crazy after working on them all day

I am in a not-too-large college apartment, so I resonate with the lack of space and separation between work, passion projects, and leisure. A few things I do to separate the spaces (while remaining at the same desk the entire time) are: Change the lighting (I have phone controlled LED bulbs and i have specific lighting for work ), and smells (I light certain candles when Im taking time to relax.

Thank you so much for sharing your unique experience with the world, almost always synthesized in a way that makes so much beautiful sense to people like me. Definitely gonna try some of these ideas! Also thanks for being a positive proponent of parenthood. When I was younger all I wanted to do was be a mom, but as I got older there just came to be so much fear around that. In this world it's so encouraging to see people speaking of parenthood positively. I know it's one of the hardest things out there but I also have always felt it was one of the most important learning experiences of human existence. Whether you feel that way or not, I appreciate hearing how much being a dad has blessed you

Had a smile on my face through almost the whole video. Congrats on the 1M! Very well deserved. I showed my partner your no regrets for 2024 video. 2 mins in he'd written a page full of notes and has been able to start processing some big changes. Never underestimate the difference you're making. ❤

For some reason the bit about addiction made me think about flipping that around and applying it to procrastination or depression keeping you stuck. Instead of “I will not drink with you today,” it could be “I will do this thing today” because it’s so easy to just tell yourself you’ll feel better tomorrow, I’ll do the thing tomorrow. Etc.

CONGRATS ON 1 MIL! 🎉❤ The advice about quitting addictions "considering tonight and tomorrow as seperate realities, there is only today and right now" - I love as one of the most. I'm currently using to get back into running. I love once I'm doing it, it's great for my mental health and i used to do it a lot instinctively when i was younger, i would just go on a run when feeling overwhelmed, not trained or whatever. After having had a knee injury for some time, a weird knot in my calve muscle and my lower back bruised, i can finally say I'm physically healthy enough to pick it up for the long term. However: I draaaag going on a run. So i mentally prepare myself the night before and then when i wake up it has to be the first thing i have to do: drink some water, dress up, and go. I start to talk myself out of it, and then i tell myself: no, you made this promise last night, and right now is all that you've got. If you don't do i now, you'll probably don't do it next week, cause it is one reality. And then i decide i want more for future me (one of my recent lifegoals has become to get old fit and flexible, seeing so many older physically stuck/ill people around me) and then i go. After 1k, i start to love it. By the end of the year i wanna run 10k do-able. Meaning in june i have to hit 5-7k. I just finished my first 4.22k since years. :) This "seperate reality" theory is super interesting. Hope one day you do a full vid about it!

I love your videos! You asked in this one, “Why are you watching right now?” I thought about it. I watch because you are relatable and you bring a new perspective to everything you talk about. Thank you for choosing to do this with your life! By “this”, I mean in all your different media, you always make people think.. Also, You are so upbeat that it makes me smile to watch your channel.

11:48 Yes, if you're stuck in the same physical location, find ways to change the environment in that location to shift your mental space. Different logins, different backgrounds, different desk (if possible), different music, having a little mantra to say as you shift gears can help too: "Work shut down, artist engage", and pairing that with some kind of physical movement has also been said to help.

First, congrats again on the 1m subscribers!! Second, yes. I would love to see your updated wall method. I think it is fascinating to see how others organize and plan. Third, I totally understand the fun and amazement of watching your children grow up. My youngest just turned 18 and is making plans for college and my oldest is a senior in college. I am still in the loving watching them grow and bloom phase. I don't think it will ever end. As always, thank you for your thoughts on so many questions and sharing your experiences. I enjoy watching your content.

You always take my mind down paths I recognize; I’ve been on them before-but just like walking that same path with someone for whom the path is new-I realize I’m seeing everything differently by the end. Thank you for the new neural pathways. My brain and my future appreciates it!

I’m sorry for your friend loss. I had a friend loss this year too and it destroyed (and still is destroying) me. I’m so glad you at least still have the tattoo to remind you of him, how wonderful it is to have a tattoo that you hated turn into a tattoo that you will cherish forever ❤️

We're craving for more videos! Every time I see you I am seeing a guide, a friend who has got something from life to share with me and who has found some sort of equilibrium within himself, which few people have, and fewer share. I also love your attitude upon good and bad things and life in general idk man you help me. Also love the editing! You're inspiring!

As someone whose work space and creative space are also the same, something that works really well for me is lighting! Set up some smart lights so that it’s noticeable throughout your room, make a colourful setting that suits your creative vibe, and set an automatic timer for whenever you’re finished work. By using that visual cue as the first step, I find it’s easier to switch computers and just get started. Appreciate the video and congrats on 1 million subscribers! 🎉
