When we first got to Australia, everyone kept telling us that we had to visit Melbourne, that we couldn't just visit Sydney. We had full intentions of making our way to Victoria, but we did not know how deep this Melbourne vs Sydney rivalry ran. The markets, the coffee culture, and all the AFL games--can you even compare Melbourne to Sydney?

Sydney and Melbourne has it's own charms. As a Sydneysider who loves Melbourne too, I gotta say that Sydney has pockets of what most people think would be Melbourne, we're just more lowkey about this aspect. What Melbourne doesn't have that Sydney has is the beautiful Harbours, cliffs and the city beaches with houses and bushes perched on its cliffs. But Melbourne has more of the cultural innovations and more often at the forefront of the trends in this part of the world. At the end of the day, I'm glad you guys get to visit our two big cities!

Most Sydneysiders don’t give a crap what Melbournians think of us. This is because we actually like Melbourne - great city, great food, great art scene, great music scene, great sporting culture. Strongly recommend people travel there, you’ll have fun!

I'm from Vic and lived in Melbourne and I absolutely agree. This "rivalry" isn't one as the bickering only runs one way. The times I've been to Sydney, the people if asked really enjoy Melbourne or it doesn't factor into their lives. Sadly, people from Melbourne try and put Sydney down at any opportunity. I actually really love Sydney.

You guys have worked out what in an incredibly short time that has taken almost 200 years to not work out. That is the two cities are different. Melbourne people should be proud of Sydney such a beautiful and unique city that provides amazing outdoor lifestyle that seamlessly integrates the beaches, ocean and harbour with the urban environment in an aesthetically stunning way. Sydney people should be proud of Melbourne for a being such an interesting and diverse city with surprises at every turn catering for all in an enriching and sensory experience. Both great cities to live if you immerse yourself in their features and their people!

12:57 the dim sim is an Australian-Chinese dish from Melbourne from pre war time. The name comes from a similar word that is from a Taishanese dialect that was common back then in Melbourne (and at the time parts of US/Canada). It’s a very common dish that is shumai inspired and is so pervasive in Aussie culture it has its own slang name - the dimmie. Dim sum on the other hand is very common in Sydney/Melbourne but know by the term Yum Cha (cantonese - drink tea). It’s a phrase really synonymous with Cantonese breakfast/lunch serving of both dim sum and tea simultaneously

11:09 Although Myki is a pain to start with, the fares deducted are fairly reasonable. At the weekend there are flat, unlimited trips for a very affordable price which makes being a tourist (or a local) on these days to be a real blast. Trivia… Melbourne has the worlds largest tram system (at one point Sydney’s system was even larger). The size is large enough that ever single tram and light rail system in the US added together is less in track distance to Melbourne

Born and bred in Sydney, have lived (in Western Bulldogs district) Melbourne for 30 plus years. Still go to Sydney for holidays. Both cities are great. Have family in Sydney, raised mine in Melbourne. Would have been cheaper to catch a cab to St.Kilda (my AFL team BTW) with four of you. The penguins only come back to nest at sunset, may have been a bit light for you. Was at Marvel with more than 30,000 in the house on Sunday and the place rocked. Glad you enjoyed Aussie Rules too bad you didn't have an Aussie near you to help you out, it is a great game but takes a long time to fully understand. Glad you enjoyed both Sydney and Melbourne, and yes a big country. Going to the North West in August, a place called Broome, takes seven hours to get to by plane from Melbourne. One big country.

penguins are at Phillip island but it s a trip you have to buy and it's at night. It's a sad at times ....the parents of the chicks go out all day and fish they return in the evening to feed the young ,and the young stand outside the burrows waiting for the return of their parents, but sometimes they don't return as sharks take them on a regular basis.

Confessions of a Melbournian: - Coffee scene in Sydney is comparable - Melbourne and Sydney don’t need to compete with one another except rugby or football - Both are iconic cities in their own right. Sydney being a bigger global icon. - Love the beaches, ferry rides, walk outside, CBD, diverse groups, harbour views in Sydney - Love the bush walk, Yarra trails, city walks, food and art scene, hippy burbs, and laid back attitude in Melbourne - People in Sydney seem in a faster pace, struggling with bills hence smile lesser (not that they are unfriendly) - People in Melbourne are quick to say gday, smile, chit-chat and gab. Even if they aren’t friendly, they’d say good morning. It’s a habit. - Transport is better in Sydney city-wide. Transport is better in Melbourne CBD and inner suburbs. Both airports are fine (Sydney seems a bit more flash, Melbourne airport seems well integrated in terms of ease of access). - I enjoy both.

It just takes a couple viral vids. We'll see you at 100k! Once you get there, you'll start getting serious sponsorship offers for in-vid ads. I need to visit Melbourne - I loved your itinerary. I've only been to Syd/Brisbane/Gold coat/Whitsunday Islands. Flight to Singapore? Maybe heading to Korea? Or to other Asian countries or are we on the way to Europe? I think your spirits really picked up since you got rid of that stinkin' van and saw your family. Here's an idea - if Lisa is missing her fam - offer to pay for a ticket for a member of her fam to visit you in Europe, etc. There are some deals now if you're flexible on dates/destinations. I've done that before. The additional cost is worth the reconnection from home.

Born and raised in Melbourne but spent some time in Sydney when I was young and again when I was mid 20s, two things I recall about Sydney - 1: driving in Sydney traffic is sketchy, if you dont wanna be stuck in traffic for hours, you gotta make super quick decisions and you gotta commit 100% to whatever your decision is, very small margin for error. 2: cockroaches, I was considering moving to Sydney until I had a roach the size of my fist run up my back while I was asleep.. aaahah no thanks!!

Mum's family was in Sydney, Dad's in Melbourne.... so spent plenty of time in each city. And although I'm a happy Melbournian... I think Sydney is a great city. Both have their pros and cons and it's all subjective. The reason one might love a city can be the reason another hates it. End of the day... You're in Australia and there is a reason 5 of our cities dominate the "Most Livable Cities" each year. Just enjoy them for what they have to offer and leave the rivalry to the sports teams.

Im originally from Sydney and I love Sydney but I also Love Melbourne. Melbourne is the Arts capitol and the place that kept its old builds and its history for example. Melbourne is like a closer to a European city with its hidden little gems all over the place. Sydney... Sydney has the harbour which is always amazing every time you walk along the foreshore, but Sydney has lost its soul, Melbourne still retains its soul. Sydney music life is dead, Sydneys night life is dead, our cafes are ok but Melbourne wins hand down on that. Overall I love both.

Sydney has kept plenty of its old buildings and has a lot of its old history still in tacked have a walk in the rocks or Hyde park barracks, there's nothing like it in Melbourne.

Canberra gets bagged a lot, mostly because it is home to the universally hated politician. But it is beautifully laid out, has great galleries and museums, as well as great hiking and very easy access to the bush, because it's right there. I'm a Melburnian ( former Londoner) and love seeing my adopted city being enjoyed. Totally agree our Myki thing for tourists is totally sht.

That makes me second, lol! Did you guys have to practise dropping the 'R' in Melbourne in order to pronounce it as "Melbun" like the Aussies do? Australian rules football kind of looks like a cross between soccer and rugby. It also looks very confusing, hard to follow. Plus, nobody wears pads, even though they tackle each other. It's sort of like controlled chaos. Congrats on reaching 10K subscribers!

definitely had to practice haha :) controlled chaos definitely feels like the right word choices! thank you!!

I'm from Sydney and live in Melbourne for work. My experience is Melbourne overall has a complex about trying to be better than Sydney. People definitely have a sense of competitiveness when they learn I'm from Sydney. In Sydney noone really cares about comparing to Melbourne - most like it just as much as Sydney.

The botanical gardens are a lovely escape from city life. Gum trees in a city landscape are for me not entirely appealing neither is the AFL.

Melbourne was hoping to be the capital years ago due to the amount of money there from the Gold rush times,There is no comparison, one is on a river and the other on a huge harbour, which makes them very different in many ways.

well miki does make sense in a way unlimited travel all day on trams and trains not bad ok its not as good as tap on tap off with a credit card which charges per trip and it does depend where you are going, on the other hand check out the cost of an uber to st kilda and return . I can travel all day on a Opal card living 3 hours form Sydney for a maximum of $5.50 to anywhere I like.

that answers my question in a previous video if you are australian, i guess not hehe i used to live in the western suburbs of melbourne, i grew up there, moved to a town 30 min drive from brisbane qld, on the redcliffe peninsula in my early 20s, back to the same area in melb for the rest of my life until 2013 we moved to northern tasmania :) to the launceston area :) all 3 states are stunning, in there own rights :) but melb will always be home to me :) as for sydney and melbourne, im 52 and its been city against city for as long as i remember hehe both beautiful big cities, but completley different in there own way. i would be happy to live in eithers inner city area :) we will be going to sydney to do our cruise at the end of next month then again in november :) cant wait to travel there again, its been maybe 15 years since ive been to nsw so really looking forward to it :) oh and were off to melbourne i two weeks too :)
