I love this video. The way I see it, you can always go back to a 9-5 to load up on some funds, but travel experiences are forever and so worth it. It's all about time.

General insurance info: I am NOT a travel/insurance agent. First off, there is a big difference between travel ins(insurance) and global/international health ins. Travel ins almost always excludes pre-existing conditions (from 60 days to 3 years lookback period, depending on policy). It's job is to pay the hospital to patch you up just enough(the term is ambulatory) to be able to travel even if you're in need of surgery in pain, then fly you (medical evacuation) back home to your residence. Most injuries are ambulatory. I once had a floating shoulder (all bones broken connecting shoulder to body) and they were gonna put me on a commercial flight in crazy pain. They may just give you an economy ticket, or pay for a nurse to accompany you, all the way up to a private ambulance jet with doctor. However, once they drop you back off at your residence/nationality country, it usually ends. So you'll have to have residence ins coverage. Also, many of them are secondary reimbursement policies, whereas you have to pay the hospital first, then file for reimbursement which can take anywhere from 10 days to 6 months, depending on company and how much they fight you. Some companies have direct pay networks where they pay the hospital directly (as long as they have pre-authorized the service). More global health ins companies have direct pay networks than travel ins. Global health ins is real annual health ins where you go through an application process, and they cover you for a year. A proper health ins policy application will ask you health questions, and you'll have to go through full underwriting, often providing med records, before you get ins. They will cover pre-existing conditions (as long as you declare any), cover them with additional fee, or exclude them (sometimes only for a period of time like 1-2 years). If you have pre-existing conditions, I recommend you apply to every possible company at the same time, since one question on every app is "Have you ever been denied or rated for ins?" - you can answer no truthfully if you apply all at once. If you can buy the ins instantly, it's travel ins. Global health ins is more expensive because they give the least trouble at claim time and are designed for multiple claims or ongoing conditions, rather than one claim, like travel ins. For travel ins, you can compare on insuremytrip or squaremouth website (put $1 or $500 as trip cost) - you can often get up to 364 days covered. I buy through them so I have an advocate if claim-time trouble. SafetyWing great marketing and affiliates links, but the underwriting ins company (Worldtrips/HCC Tokio Marine) very slow/difficult on medical claims. SafetyWing and InsuredNomads have a TWO YEAR pre-existing condition lookback period. World Nomads also marketing and affiliate links so everyone recommends them. But they're expensive and you get different company/policy based on your residence. For EU/UK citizens, I recommend TrueTraveller - good claim reviews. For US citizens, GeoBlue/HTH - covers pre-existing if have US ins and great direct-pay network with great app for finding providers. For any policy, READ THE DESCRIPTION OF COVERAGE/POLICY WORDING. Make sure it covers any "risky" activites you plan to do. My general rule is to look for the shortest pre-existing exclusion period and the simplist terms, as the stricter the terms, maybe more fight at claim-time. Note you usually have to buy your travel policy before you leave on your trip. For Geoblue, you could theoretically buy a travel policy for 182 days, then return to your residence and buy another policy. Other long-term travel ins providers you can buy after your trip starts are Global Underwriters, Seven Corners(3 YR pre-existing exclusion and plays games with claims), Heymondo(unlimited pre-existing lookback), Allianz Onetrip Emergency Med(only $50k med coverage). With the first two, get the risky/hazardous activies rider if you plan on riding a motorbike/scooter and best value is at the $500-$1000 deductibles. For proper global/international health ins, all policies will want a residence address to put on the application. It's cheaper if you buy from a local national insurer or regional policy, then get the "travel add-on", that covers you for limited trips from your base country - true for South/Latin American. Find the best hospitals where you're based and ask what insurers they direct bill to. You may need a local broker - some brokers only work for one company (like AIA Malaysia). Great website/broker to compare global health ins is pacificprime. Many nomads like Cigna. I know with Cigna, you can change your residence country by notifying them (and pay premium difference). Other major ones are AXA, Allianz, April, IMGlobal, ACS, GeoBlue/HTH/Bupa, DavidShield, Aetna, William Russell, Morgan Price, Azimuth Risk, Globality, Foyer. IMGlobal will exclude anything pre-existing from last 10 years. Pacific Cross has good value in Asia. Get one that is guaranteed renewable. It will take some research. Some expats combine a small local cheap accidental injury policy with separate high deductible health ins. Inpatient is really the only coverage you need. Outside US/Canada/China/Switzerland/Singapore/HK/Macau, outpatient services are incredibly cheap. I've walked into emergency rooms in Croatia, Belgium and Thailand, gotten x-rays, blood tests, urine, and it all came to less than $120USD. I know a couple that had an uncomplicated baby delivery, 1 night in a hospital, in Panama and paid $66USD (yes that's sixty six USD). It was in a small rural public hospital, but they got adequate care. For surgeries, the same Dr often will work at multiple hospitals with different rates (often 2x-6x cost difference), so shop around. Outpatient only becomes expensive if you need chronic treatment like kidney dialysis, or cancer treatments, which some hospitals do as inpatient anyway (so they can bill ins). Drugs bought at the hospital pharmacy are often marked up - get a prescription and use an outside pharmacy. No matter what: READ THE FINE PRINT. Understand your policy. Google unfamiliar terms. Many policies won't cover motorcycle/scooter injuries unless you buy extra rider, and are licensed. Save the emergency number in your phone. I carry the card laminated with me. Many hospitals will NOT treat you without a cash deposit (which will be hard without local family/friends while you wait injured/sick in the hallway), so having an ins company skips that. I once woke up in a hospital with a bad concussion(memory problems) and I'm glad they found it so they would treat me, as I was alone and they had a company to bill and handle everything. Save the claim forms beforehand in your email/phone, so your doctor can fill it out while you're there. It's difficult to get a signature 3 months later when the ins wants it. The #1 coverage you must have is medical evacuation/repatriation - that's the big event that needs $100k+ to get you home and it's why people create gofundme fundraisers. It's designed to cover the transfer to the nearest hospital that offers what you medically need, or to get you to your residence hospital from a foreign hospital. All travel ins and most global health ins include it (sometimes with extra fee). Make sure your travel ins doesn't exclude pre-existing conditions for the med evac portion. Some credit cards offer it if you charge your flights on them (but often have min max days of trip limits). A cheap way, for US/Canadian residents, is to buy membership from Divers Alert Network($35). Or there are European based organizations memberships that offer it inexpensively (often under search and rescue) for their residents. But remember "membership" is not ins, the fine print says they are not obligated to help you. For real ins, annual ACS repatriation(med evac) plan(158 EUR+) or GEOS ($200USD). www.insuremytrip.com/?linkId=6050d4931e531210d45d73af

I’m a frequent traveler too and usually I’m abroad months or more at a time. How I deal with isolation is to send pics to my friends and family on my iPad and tell stories about these places. It’s fun when my friends react and ask questions about these places and I learn more by researching to answer their questions. I also stay in my hotel when I’m feeling tired and just relax and talk to other guests. Staying in hostels is nice esp for solo travelers like myself because I’m able to meet other people from all over the world and also learn their culture, language, food etc. I love traveling and I will prob travel until I’m 100 years old hahaha.

I didn't realize know about the Google Fi 90-day rule until this video. I had to look it up. So if the majority of your data usage is outside the US, they will disable it. The financial steps you took are very similar to those who are part of the FIRE movement, except their "obsession" is longer term financial freedom (typically in the form of opting out of the workplace). Very similar concepts to what you did! Very curious about the packing video - you two travel so lightly!

Do you go to an internet cafe in each country or do you buy data? Your videos have given me so many ideas, as i have already traveled(tropical countries) in the 70s when it was cheap & easy and lived in Hawaii, too. Never bought health /travel insurance(never drove a motorbike) and luckily only got infectious diseases: malaria and dengue fever. Love all the tech tips. 😎

hi Liz! thanks for the comment! great qs--we have been quite fortunate to find great wifi at most of the accommodations we've stayed at throughout our trip, actually. Maybe in 3-4 places we can think of, we've had to visit an Internet cafe or use our own cell phone data to upload videos.

Hi Lisa and Josh, you guys are such happy spirits. Glad I’ve found your story. My partner and I have been professional Housesitters for 10 yrs. I’m Australian and my partner is English. We are in Italy now (a long story) and fly home soon to Oz to try to pick up our lives and settle down. Covid changed our travelling and we are so pleased we got to travel when travel was easy and innocent. Have you considered housesitting in between other things? Lisa, you love cats don’t you? Lori--this is so great to hear!! yes! this is such a timely and great question--we are working on this right now. the points have been such a game changer for us. we talk more about it more in detail in our skillshare course, but we are currently working on a video about this very topic too. we did have a spreadsheet/plan for our destinations before (in 2019, actually). but after the pandemic changed everything, we kinda had to scrap that and change things/decide as we go based on what countries were opening up. hopefully that will change for when you guys plan your travels, as many countries start to open up again :)

I've been with Google Fi since they were Project Fi - 6 years now and have LOVED the service. It's been awesome to get our $10/gigabtye service internationally and to automatically flip on to the service of what ever country we've just landed in. So I'm super distressed to hear that the cheap data is going bye-bye. Thanks for the heads up on Google Voice. Curious why you didn't talk about WhatsApp tho since everyone in the world uses it except Americans....

we feel the same way--it was convenient and the answer to international travel, but also keeping your number. turns out if you plan to travel internationally more often than being in the US, you may lose your plan...such a bummer :( and great point! we love WhatsApp and primarily use that to communicate with all of our friends/family when we travel, but forgot to mention it because we were focused on the data/keeping your number part of our phones

hey love your guys content, im preping to go nomad in may. would you care if i asked you a question about google voice. im trying to figure out how to get messages and voicemails and call back to the USA. after you ported your number are you still able to call back to the USA for free while your online? I know google voice can make free calls within the USA but it cost to call other countries, however im trying to figure out how to call back to the USA while im also traveling, just curious if you can still call and text back to the USA for free?! please let me know when you have time im really trying to figure out a good solution before leaving hope i explained that well lol 🤣

Yes, the short answer is yes, if you have google voice, you are still able to call back to the US (with your US number, actually) when you're online. Would just double check your number can actually be ported to Google Voice (not all area codes can,) so would check that first. But if it can, yes!

I know that’s really personal but I couldn’t see how you could get to do either of those things comfortably while travelling so much. It’s not just that the travel money is gone once the trip is over but it’s the loss of income for time you are travelling. (Fully aware having kids and owning a house isn’t on everyones list of important things).

That’s our goal! the day to day certainly fluctuates. But we’ve been able to offset a lot of costs for flights and hotels with points we’ve saved up and we definitely eat rather inexpensively :) we list the costs of each of our days at the end of each of our travel episodes, in case that’s helpful

Sounds like FIRE movement except their goal is to reach a point where one has enough income to quit job market for good. Trip saving is easy and also very risky path to take, Im glad to see its working for you. FIRE path is better as in may be 5 or so years you can build a networth enough to live off passive income and you can always come back and continue where you left off. With saving for trip approach, when money are up the only place you can go back to is your parents basement In regards to cell phone plans, Google PI is probably best solution but to note, my T-mobile plan for $30 a month gives free roaming which I never had issues with neither in Europe or Asia. Yes, its slow but if you are in country for a week or just couple months it proven to work just fine with $0 extra charges Wonder what is your monthly travel budget?
