That couple there are so luckey in life. Gives me a bit of hope. Fifteen or so years ago I hit a reef at about 01:00 and sank mine, no ins.,, it was my dream home, I'd worked almost 30 years for it. I gave up. I've been living land locked and miserable ever since. Now I'm saving up so I can get back to the only life I ever had where I was really happy. I ck craigslist every day hoping to find a cheep or free sailboat. Thanks for the encouraging video, it even moistened my eyes a bit. Thank you.

Hey guys - just wanted to let you know how much our family of six is enjoying your vlog. I especially like the underlying themes of financial independence and thoughtful frugality. Use money to live a life worth living. I had a 37ft Tatyana ,about a 32 ft water line and while bobbin at anchor in Exhuma Bahamas I had plenty of time to observe that the 42 and longer were spanning the waves and riding much better than my shorter boat. I cried like a baby when I sold her and had no regrets as she was strong and safe in open water , had tons and tons of storage and a joy to liveaboard.

Chin up! The boat you got is a whole other story than the free one. If you are serious about going cruising, you are sure to run in to some challenging conditions, and then you will be the happiest sailors in the sea that you got a 352! I live close to Orust, Sweden where these are built (got another Orust boat, Forgus 35 myself), and it's just the safest, sturdiest, most well built boats you'll find! Thanks for sharing your videos, makes the long dark nordic winter a lot easier to endure :) Good luck to you! Joel

Guys, great story and great videos. Thanks for letting us participate your journey. Short comment to your "concerns" about your Rassy (as you compared your long "expensive" yacht to that free but shorter one): First: the Rassy is one of THE best yachts for crossing the Atlantic. They are super robust and reliable in terms of ocean crossing. Secondly: no matter wich yacht you buy, there is always something that one may be unhappy with. It's always a compromise. A little little more space becomes very welcome once you have guests on board or just need some space for your own privacy... Thirdly: the price you paid for your Rassy has just been the greatest deal of all times. In Europe, especially in the northern parts, these boats are worth more than € 100k, even at the age of yours. I wish you all the best for your future plans and I am pretty sure, that you won't regret your choice with your Rassy! Cheers from the Baltic Sea, Germany!

Your HR is a great boat and you won’t regret it. Can’t compare to a free boat, but you can always dream about the deal you could have had. Hindsight is always 20/20. No regrets...move forward. The Ericsson is a good boat but the RH is the cruisers ‘bomb’! Right up there with an Amile (a la SV Delos, although I realize they have a 53’ footer). There’s a reason that most boaters suffer from “two foot’itis”, which for some is a larger boat, for others is a cat vs mono, and others, the deal they or model they never got. I sail a hunter 37 which was far from my preferred boat, but after 3 solid years is now my dream boat. It has and does everything I will ever need a sailboat to ever do for me. Fair winds guys and smooth cruising.

The mainsail setup is the best. You might look into a CapeHorn autopilot before you take your big long cruise. It's supposed to relieve everyone of the need to stay at the wheel. They are not cheap, but the makers think they are the best. The inventor claims he went around the world handling his boat alone, all without standing at the wheel at all except to set course changes. 28,000 miles, without twitching the wheel in between waypoints at all.

Hi Guys, Adorable Doggie, No such thing as a perfect boat! I understand where your coming from with the smaller 'free boat' with financial situation. As you were saying those words how lovely the weather was... I really wonder if anybody would be saying 'free boat' in a different weather situation? The vlog also brought up the quote; " We never own a boat, a boat owns us!" I'd rather a Rassy owned us. Anyway love your energy and input and always looking forward to the next vlog on your exciting adventure.

Back to the electrical outlet! That being a foreign boat it was 220v instead of 110v . 220v between the two black wires and 110v from blk to white. you case was different but will confuse the next person to work on your boat Learned my lesson when I plugged in my vacuum cleaner on a South African boat ,It ran real fast for a short while. The boat was not plugged in and we were on inverter and batteries and was putting out 220v. I hope you did it right. Bilge to the sink makes for diesel in the sink. Haven't been following your progress but after 18 yrs liveaboard the I know the first year was the hardest. PS get a circuit tester plugin to see if neutral and hot lead is not reversed as some eguipment can't tolerate it and can put 110v on the case.

What a surprise to see Jordan and randi with you. Soo cool. I just binge watched 125 of their episodes before finding your channel. Yes they did get a free sailboat but they did put a lot of time, work and money into refitting her. I do have to say that you have a nicer boat. Your interior is sweet. I am sorry I didn't find you blogs sooner. As you toured the country and made your way to the Adirondacks my wife and I could have connected with you. We live at southern edge of adirondack park and would have loved to show you some sweet camping/kayaking spots. I am amazed at the amount of work that went into ripping up teak deck. I would probably have opted for sanding and refinishing original teak yet the job you did installing synthetic teak came out beautiful. Well done. I also have to comment on how brave you were to go thru the manual lock in dark. I will continue to watch your progress and journey. Thanks for sharing

Had a Endeavour 40. Not bluewater boats. Not built well, but not real bad either. But free is free, enjoy it. Don't expect the ice box to hold temp. Wiring will be substandard unless the PO rewired. Tanks are a issue. Usual stuff on a older boat plus some.

You'll think that about your big boat's extra 4 ft until you live with it on the water for a while, then it'll be nice (not saying you wouldn't do well in a smaller boat, just that it wont bug you once it's all said and done).

I know someone that is always waiting for free stuff. While he has a couple of cool things his life has passed him by while he waits for stuff that he could have purchased years ago. It's like waiting to win lotto, it never happens, you just need to make it happen yourself and you guys are like that.

Very interesting. There are plenty of 'free' boats in yards all over the UK - and plenty of cheap ones too. I think that both your boat, and Jordan & Randi's , are both great blue-water yachts. But which is the best value for money? Personally I think that a HR 352 for $30K is about as good value as it is possible to get even compared with a free boat.
@sailnblue4977 жыл бұрын
Well of course, there is NO such thing as a free boat. But some certainly are a lot easier on your pocket than others! If it is anything but a hole in the water, you better be there early and fast when you spot a unicorn. Some boats have things that make them hard to sell- bad location, cosmetic but fixable flaws, bad time of year or out of town owners. If you cultivate the owner a bit and find they are very attached to the boat but really don';t need the money, they may sell you the boat dirt cheap just because they want a new owner that will take care of her.I have 40ft steel cutter in good shape for exactly that reason. Now good friends with the old owners and they did us a big favor. It has turned into a great win-win situation.

@svbarryduckworth6287 жыл бұрын
Fuel, fuel, fuel. 90%+ of the time it is fuel. On a newer engine with low hours it's even more likely to be fuel system. People just don't put away their boats and engines with the intent of longer-term storage. Smaller is better. As long as you have decent tanks for fuel/water for longer crossings and can store enough food then a good stout smaller boat is just as good as a larger one. Easier to sail, everything is simpler, and it just will keep on costing less than a larger boat every day you own it. Most people buy too much boat and end up paying for that extra size every time they deal with it. 35' is about as long as a couple ever needs IMHO. We've got about $50k invested into our 42-year old HR-35 so far. That's a lot of money that could be spent on other fun stuff. I still wouldn't trade it for anything at this point. I've rebuilt every inch of that boat with my own two hands almost. A couple new sails and it'd practically almost be brand new.

Love the video. The Endeavor 32 is a great coastal cruiser and will be excellent in the Bahamas or down island. It wasn't designed for offshore work, and by looking at the numbers, it is not well suited for a trip from the Caribbean to the Med. Practical Sailor has an excellent review of it if you want to check it out. The HR 35 is a world class blue water cruiser and will serve you much better in the long run. Don't second guess yourselves; free is not always better! Cheers!

I've heard some people say it's not a "blue water cruiser." I've never gotten a good explanation as to why. I've read that practical sailor article, and even the article doesn't explain why they only recommend it for "limited offshore cruising." I'm just genuinely curious as to why the E32 isn't consider "bluewater" by some.
