i used to be in Girl Guides and went to Summer Camps, so i know a lot about what we call a "lean-to" in Canada. This was cool! it brought me back to the good old days. This crazy camping lover lady wants to create a cube shaped tent out of tarps and mesh, with 4 walls made from tarps, a tarp floor, a zippered tarp door, and zippered windows, made from tarp and mesh. The tarp roof would slope slightly on either side. The coolest part about my idea is that in another version of my tent cube, people could attach one tent to another, via a special zipper system... you could have three cubes in a row, make 3 or 4 cubes into an "L" shape, make 5 cubes into a "C" shape, make 7 cubes into a longer "U" shape, or even attach 8 cubes into one large square shape. i am eve considering soundproofing one wall with foam between 2 tarps. The foam would go 3/4 of the way up the wall, with a mesh window on top for ventilation! :) This tent would come pre-sewn, all the user has to do is slide poles into the pre-sewn holders and these poles would click together. Think IKEA build it yourself, yet you can easily take this tent apart and easily pack it into a small space. It would be easy to clean with a good hosing and hang up to dry. There would possibly be places to hang a flashlight, pouches to store your reading glasses or watch... Dude, this Video gives me inspiration to get creative! (Although i live in a very small apartment, and trying to sew tarps together on the fourth floor in the hot Summer will prove to be a challenge! First i need to buy a sewing machine, and i have very limited funds. i know English probably is not your first language, so i hope you understood all i typed. You have a cool username. by the way. Peace from Edmonton City, Canada! :)

Hey leader! sorry for a late reply! It looks like you are making a modular system for semi-permanent tent. It reminds me of what we call a party tent in the Netherlands. These are also often combinable by zipping the sides together. Do take care that the roof supports the weight of rainfall or snow, especially if the angle is shallower than 45 degrees. Otherwise you would get puddles! Kind regards from the Netherlands, Papa hiker

Hey Johan, Thanks for your comment! Yes, get the dd xl tarp, it is really good for two people and gear. If you get creative and some practice, you could use the bikes to put up the tarp. This also prevents them from getting stolen. For good weather protection you could do pitches that have the opening on the short side, like the a frame toque tent or the modified A frame. If the weather is good and you’re looking forward to a long evening enjoying the sunset over the mountains, do the Holden tent. You may have to tie two walking sticks together. The Holden has a 2 meter peak height. Good luck and have fun! Papa hiker

Great video again! I just purchased the DD SuperLight Tarp and the DD SuperLight Tarp S, for use with one of my Hammocks, or in combination with a tent and I think they are great with all the attachment points (they are also how I came across your videos). Guess I'll consider getting the SuperLight XL as well, seeing all these great setups that you do with the rectangel shaped tarp.
@papahiker90146 жыл бұрын
Hi åge-Johan, For hammocking dd suggests slightly larger sizes than for ground dwelling. The Dd xl is in my opinion luxurious for two but too large for one. If you go with others: highly recommended. Take care with the superlight not to overstretch internal poles. Kind regards papa hiker!

As one of my favorite movie characters famously commented after asking “ Have you ever seen blood in the moonlight Will? It looks quiet black. It is better to have privacy for that sort of thing. Particularly if you are nude.” And that is one of the reasons for big back yards, concluded Will Graham.

@papahiker90143 жыл бұрын
Hey Jason, I like it! It would fit my style because many of my pitches have poles somewhere in the middle of the tarp, although not always dead center. That said: tarps that have central lifters (like the dd that I use a lot) also have a reinforced patch that they sew the tie outs on, but that is a bit smaller. The seek outside one sure looks like a good tarp and a clever idea! Kind regards papa hiker

is there a reason why you avoid ground contact with the tarp?
@papahiker90145 жыл бұрын
Hi Larry, yes: the tarp will be bigger, and the air flow underneath will avoid condensation inside. Also, if it floats you can compensate for uneven ground. Making that perimeter gap is in my opinion the best thing you can do to improve your tarp experience. Kind regards papa hiker.
@Larrypint5 жыл бұрын
@@papahiker9014 ah ok, would you do that also when it's windy,raining and cold? Greetz from Germany
@e.g.m65984 жыл бұрын
@@Larrypint Tipis have been made this way for an eternity. An inner tarp (ground cover) is used with a raised edge to keep crawlies out, rain off, air circulating. Its like wearing high pants(ground tarp) beneath an untucked shirt (tipi). You can buttress up the perimeter of the inner ground tarp with 12" sticks ( 6" sunken in ground), or wrap edges around rocks or stowed gear.
@papahiker90143 жыл бұрын
Hey Larry, in addition to the reply by a.g. mu: yes, for sure. If you want to in high wind, you can tilt the whole setup towards the wind, so that the perimeter is lower there, and higher on the other side. But you don't have to. If the whole thing is 10cm from the ground, the rain will enter your shelter just a tiny bit. I myself usually just have a simple ground cloth without bath tub sides. Kind regards! Papa hiker

@papahiker90146 жыл бұрын
Hey! First check out this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q3TIfJufgcp5fdk With the dd s superlight. A poncho is only slightly smaller! If i get my hands on one I’ll experiment, but options are limited. Kind regards Papa hiker
@justlooking1936 жыл бұрын
Yes, some ponchos are about the same size as the DD Tarp S. Some are quite smaller. I don't think anyone should plan to spend the night under a 7'-0" poncho, but I think it's a good idea to have them in your backpack if you go for a day-hike or as a secondary shelter if you are camping for a few days. I'm pretty sure most people use lean-to, plow point (flying V), half pyramid (Holden), A-Frame or any combination in-between. There are good reasons for that. But I don't think every set up needs to provide enough room to lie down. I'm very interested in learning about good alternatives even if they only provide enough space to sit down or lie in a fetal position.
@papahiker90146 жыл бұрын
Hi! I’m also thinking about the double use of a poncho as a ground sheet... Working on a design where you don’t need a hole for your head. But anyway: a poncho tarp does not sound bad in combination with a bivvy bag. You could do a lean to, modified lean to or V fly, but that is about it I guess. But who knows what cool products we get in the future! Kind regards papa hiker
@justlooking1936 жыл бұрын
"Working on a design where you don't need a hole for your head." You mean like a "rain burqa"?

Haha! No, I try to think outside the box and come up with something where the back of your neck is at the middle of one of the long sides and you fold the rest around you. Like how you wrap yourself in a wool blanket, only with wrist straps. I saw the exped poncho/bivy by the way, that looks really multi use. Kind regards papa hiker.

Where in the heck did you learn to pitch a tarp in so many different configurations?!!! What an amazingly useful survival skill! Do you know of a book or have a print up of all these pitches so that I might go out to the woods with a tarp and try all of these? Also, what methods do you use to deal with insects and/or a floor/ground cloth? Many thanks!
@papahiker90146 жыл бұрын
Hey Carole, thanks for your awesome comment. There is no book with all of the options, but I may write it in the future. It just went like this: in reviews/product descriptions of tarps I stumbled across the sentence “the options are endless”. This seemed like a challenge. Since then I’ve tried to design and collect as many useful pitches as possible 😄. Your second question: the tarp is the outer layer. Underneath you can choose something that fits the circumstances, like a full bivi bag, a ground sheet (for winter in a forest), a bug net etc. Kind regards, Papa hiker

But it's hard to judge how roomy the different pitches and tarps are. What would you recommend for two bikers looking for a tarp based fully enclosed shelter with no floor? A DD XL, 3*3DD or 3,5*3,5DD? And which pitch would you recommend? I would take extendable walking sticks with me as well, so I'm not dependant on trees/sticks being available. I hope you can give me some advice!

I pitched your #18 strong hexamid in my back yard with a bit more clearance off the ground... what do you do with the flap that falls down between on both ends when you guy it out? It seems that it might cause water to run back under the tarp and make a mess. Have you used that one in the rain?
@papahiker90143 жыл бұрын
Hey Texanbybirth! Sorry for a very late reply. Best thing is to tie it on the outside as if it is a guyline, but with side wind that is annoying. Then I tie it on the outside to the lee side, on the leftover line of the tie-out there. In snowy conditions it is also fine to keep it on the inside, but you dont want it dangling in your face, so I just tie them to my bootstraps and lie them to the side.
