My first long rifle was purchased when I was around 9 years old by my dad which was a Rem 700 .243 youth model. Harvested my first 3 deer with it. Fast forward almost 25 years later and now my dad carries in rifle season, the same rifle he bought for me and has harvested several deer after I've moved on to carrying my .300RUM and .308. Talk about full circle seeing my hero use my very first firearm as his go to when he has a plethora of other arms he could use. Its the littlest things in life that will make your heart happy.

My dad has used a sako 243 Most of his life hunting elk, bear, mule deer and Blacktail deer. He has shot and Killed many of these animals in his lifetime And mostly one shot kills with his 243 rifle. I think these bullets would do just fine for deer, but yes you have to practice and your shot placement definitely makes a difference most of the time.

@@jasonglaze7874 I think you should take the 243 this year Jason. It would help to go out and practice with it a little bit before, especially if you haven’t shot it much lately. If I wish to offer any advice, I would go for the back first if you have a back shot. I took one down quite easily that way. Or maybe a neck shot, but my dad took his last elk down with a behind the shoulder shot. I would put my dad‘s 243 up against any rifle in this world! My son is 33 yrs old and when he was 14 he took a 14 point buck that field dresses 146 lbs with that exact same gun. It was his paw paws gun. I helped process right at 700 white tail at the processing center in cross plains Texas this past season, non anywhere close to that. The buck my son took was taken in the long mountains in far western comanche County texas

I suppose, "Great thrill for a young hunter, or love 243s, or really love Savage, or whatever, rifles, or something neat is out of the question. While it wasn't an Iowan buck, it was only 4 lbs less than your huge does. Also, Texas does have much larger deer in the panhandle.

Don’t worry about the last group. If you can consistently keep it in an inch you’re fine. Those who complain about a 1 inch group at a 100 yards don’t realize that’s acceptable. Here’s the challenge to those who complain. Get off the bench and get off the ground from being in the prone. Then shoot groups. People would find it hard to keep it in the inch group from sitting, kneeling, rested on a tree trunk, etc. I think your doing top notch.

I Love the savage axis rifles. Sub moa out of the box with factory ammo. That axis you got there is the compact. I recently bought a Ruger American compact in 243 fory daughter few shots later I love it. Took my first deer with .243 it did the trick but with little blood trail ran about 50 yards down a steep Ravine and back up again on the other side before crashing on the top of a huge hill I had crawl up. For hunting deer with .243 I'd say it's ideal for young children or small frame shooters with good shot placement. I like 30-06, manageable recoil and powerful takedown, deer wont take more than a few steps if any. Quick and easy.

Who-tee-Who the AccutipV is a Varmint round that's why they have a prairie dog and coyote on the box. The V is for Varmint. They are designed to basically explode on impact. It's not a good bullet for deer hunting if you're shooting broadside into the heart and lung area it won't hold together to leave a exit wound for tracking if needed when the animal does not expire right away. I know you will be taking head or neck shots yourself, but others may not know that, and get the wrong idea about the type of bullet it is. Just Sayin', don't mean to be harping too bad but that's not what they are designed to be for sure.

Personally, I would HIGHLY recommend against using that bullet for deer. If there's one thing I have learned over the years of testing and hunting with these light weight and high velocity varmint style bullets, they tend to almost explode on impact and give you very poor penetration on deer sized game. I have seen too many deer shot with varmint rounds in smaller calibers like 243 or 22-250 that end up wounded with a broken shoulder rather than being put in the freezer. The Winchester ballistic silvertips are another terrible round for deer for the same reason in my opinion, even though they aren't varmint bullets (I have seen many instances of them blowing apart on impact like a varmint round), but that's a debate for another day
@WHOTEEWHO2 жыл бұрын
Not for shoulder. Neck and head
@allthingsconsidered32112 жыл бұрын
I agree. A log of the interlock do this. They dont lock that well. Hornady too. Ron spomer does a good video on wanting good bullet weight for good penetration, if the tip mushrooms or explodes. That way their is a rear/shank with heavier/longer bullets that allows for better penetration. and if you cant go big enough go with a better bullet design, bonded bullet or solid copper or hard cast lead. Basically copper is the newer/better hard cast for big game.

That load looks like bloodshot venison me. That's a lot of velocity for an unbounded bullet.

Savage rifles have an adjustable trigger. You can set it as low as it will let you or just a little heavy. Take off the stock and right in the back of the trigger there is a screw to adjust the trigger. I have four Savage rifles and they work very well for me.

The regular Savage Axis doesn't have a adjustable trigger and they are very heavy pull but the Axis 2 model is adjustable.

yes, some of the Savage Axis rifles do have the adjustable trigger, but not all of them. they make a standard Axis and an Axis 2. the Axis 2 has the Savage accu-trigger which is the adjustable one

.243 is all my youngest son ever hunts whitetail with. There isn’t a year that goes by that he doesn’t get 3 or 4 nice sized bucks.
