247: McFarlane Series 8 Sybaris (Berserker Clan) Dragon

The paintjob of this dragon perfectly demonstrates why and how much shading and blending matters on such large and detailled surfaces. It really looks more like a work-in-progress rather than a finished product and I think that McFarlane has cut corners in the wrong places with this one. Looking at the legs and the tail hurts me a little bit when I think about all the other possible paint applications for this sculpt. I can only join in your hope that they get better with each new release.

You hit the nail on the head. If everything was the same blotch, that's one thing. What rubs the salt into the wound is that some parts _are_ in fact painted with an attempt at complexity. So the feeling is as you say, a "work-in-progress"! What also hurts is looking at some of their older dragons... and those were painted more than 10 years ago!

Very nice review, now I'm really considering of getting this then do a repaint. Cause the sculpt, base and details are really good, but the color is bleh.

If you know how to do the repaint yourself, or have someone do it for you at a price you can live with, that is one option if you like the sculpt. The base is incredible to be honest. If I had the money to do this, I would have someone repaint this in the same style as one of the older McFarlanes. That would really be reliving glory days, and having only good memories. Not this sad reminder of days long past.

Just ordered mine with a broken box which made it cheaper. I'm planning to make it onto a Black dragon with red under color, underbelly and under wings will be shades of red, while the top is leathery black. Horns and spikes will also be in the shades of red. For the base, I'm planning to add real gravel glued into it, then paint it with shades of grey. It'll be an ongoing project, hopefully all goes well :D

Sadly dont collect dragons ( space is ever limited) but here to still shout out and show support for u to do the things you love That is a cool Dragon though ngl 😂

Haha thanks for your support! But no worries mate, my dragon base has always been very niche with I would esimate just a hundred or two, but these are people who have followed me forever, so I'm happy if just they watch it 😁 The next one will hopefully be more worthy of all your times!

For me, the old Mcfarlane dragons had better color and designs than these new ones.

The old ones like the fire dragon clan that comes out of the lava with the small knight... damn i thought they would upgrade in the future :( At least a sloppy wash with one or two colors and a drybrush...and this thing looks 3 Levels better.

It's really sad indeed. This looks like a plastic toy and even though I can't paint to save my life, I think even I would be able to dry brush some textured areas and make it look better. I hope they can buck up.

Ummm... actually China. And it's quite cheap to get here. I'm not sure if you might try Taobao or Aliexpress? How much is it in Malaysia.

Btw my latest acquisition is the Monster Hunter Creator Malzeno - he is gorgeous. He is supposed to be a vampiric dragon and they did capture that mix of regalness, majesty but malevolence that a vampire lord would exude.

It really is sad indeed. Sometimes, it's better not to restart something unless you can do it justice. Now on the other hand I was going to say my next one is a far cry from this, but well, I guess I don't need to tell you! 🤣 "Majesty but malevolence"... wish I'd thought to say that! 😂
