I had that engine in my first sled...a 1967 Olympic. First failure was the intake side of the piston broke off taking a chuck of cylinder sleave with it . Second failure the cylinder cracked all the way around above the holdown nuts. I had to hold the cylinder down with one hand to limp it the last 2 mi. home! ...I replaced it with a highly modified 293 Sachs engine...and never had another issue! That was long ago...havn't had an issue with a Rotax since!

Thank you for the advice. It ended up being the mismatched stator/flywheel. I had a 64 or 65 engine that stole the electrics from and she fired up first pull! Thanks again!

Im in the process of rebuilding one of these from a few different year engines and ive had alot of trouble getting it to run. I have a mid 70's elan engine (125 lbs comp with fresh bore) but the older style stator with ignition coil mounted on it and this engine had the external coil.Im wondering if the newer style engine will run with the 68 247 stator? Going on a 65 chalet so im not concerned with lighting. I have plenty of fire but it almost acts like a car engine with the distributor 180 out. Any help would be great! Thank you!

+89vmaxx I am no expert on part interchanging. If you are getting good spark ... it should work. I don't know what part of the world you are from ... but if you are in North America, it should be quite easy to find the correct stator plate with an external coil. This being said, The points gap should be between .014 and .018 thousanths. I usually set the timing on these with a dial gauge. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eXLUm3qPg96fr6M this link will take you to my timing video. If you have compression ... good spark ... good air/fuel mixture and it is timed correctly ... it should work. Are you absolutely certain that the cam is mated with the magneto advance mechanism correctly? If it isn't, then you would get all sorts of bad things happening. Has the engine started at all? Does it idle ... badly or not? Will it REV ... boggy or not? I need more details into what it is doing or not doing to be able to help ...

i wonder that when any rebuild small engine aluminum case and removal rust bolts must be clean then put silver anti-seize around reuse bolts installing aluminum case back on?
@GaWajn7 жыл бұрын
I don't usually do that ... but it is a very good idea to do so. Thanks for the tip.

Do you know if a modern Starter off say a Sled/Jet Ski will bolt on these older Singles? Do you know the Stud Size and Spacing? Like to see a Points to CDI conversion done.

How is the 277 different from the 247? More displacement / hp, but otherwise the same?
@GaWajn8 жыл бұрын
+CHOPPERGIRL AIRWAR I have never worked on a 277 ... sorry ... I can't help you with this.

A lot of these old Singles were HP rated at 5000 to 5500rpms and used a low 8 to 9.5cr and just a Muffler. The 277F/277UL used a high 11.8cr and was rated 26hp at 6250rpms, and 28hp at 6400rpms. With an aftermarket Tuned Pipe made by R&D they made 30.5hp at 6250rpms. The 247 was the low HP version, the 1971 246 Blizzard F/A it's counter part was 29hp and used a higher CR with a Tuned Pipe.
