Very good video, very good set up, valuable information that im going to need when I put my 335 rotax back together, I was worried about adjusting the points and proper alignment of the stator plate, but not any more. Thank you very much

Probably a less accurate shortcut: I determine TDC by observing the piston through the spark plug hole. Mark a white line somewhere on the housing adjacent to the flywheel and another on the flywheel so they line up. Connect an automotive timing light to the spark plug lead (spark plug out but clamped to the cylinder head) and to a 12 volt battery. Spin the motor with a cordless drill and see how the marks line up when the light flashes on them. The mark on the flywheel should land a bit before the one on the housing, about 4 degrees. The motor does not spin fast enough to activate the advance cam.

While you were so well setup for it, it says in the service manual 0012 end gap measurement between internal coil and magnets on the mag. Best spark with blue flame.

Hi, stumbled onto this super information channel. This is great! Not everyone knows how to time these motors. I knew a light or buzzer was needed and have assembled one now myself. I have what I think is a 71 250 Elan. No VIN plate. The ignition coil is under the flywheel. Your in Canada, do you have a recommended source for parts? Thank you

dave flyer. So if you have coils you dont have points
@patrickmorin76934 жыл бұрын
dave flyer Don’t know for sure cause the spring tension cam needs to be replicated for various load demands. Full out racing you could set at 160 but I am not sure if it would ever start up.

Yep...may years of doin it in dealerships in the 60's- 70's. Nobody has a clue about points adjustment or timing these days!

also wondering,if you set the points at 17 or16,will it run different
@GaWajn5 жыл бұрын
I don’t think there would be much difference. The spec is between 14 and 18. Maybe someone else with real world experiences could chime in?

@@GaWajn I have a 335cc single i could not time to the .230 spec with points gap set at .14,.15,.16,.17. i had to set at.18 max to get the timing and the motor runs perfectly.

Hello there ! really nice Video ! thanks for uploading ! i have a few question tho ! im rebuilding my 299 12/3 and would like to check the Timing ! if i just rig a Light thats okay ? are all 299 12/3 timing advance is at 150-170 BTDC ? and what is your Flywheel/Magneto Puller you have ! looks to work nice ! thanks
@GaWajn8 жыл бұрын
I would not know with just a light. I have never done it that way. Check your service manual for the correct spec for timing BTDC, but I think you are correct. That puller is the correct puller ... still available from Bombardier dealers.

Regarding your points comment « that’s all I’ll say about that » Well! Any collectors still put there who want original points, « Dream on » cause BRP sold the rights to Fullerton’s who now provide a Turquish équivalent only thru BRP outlets at $40 cdn a crack. No made in Germany stamp of coarse but they look alike and fit. Set at 16 you will be hard pressed to adjust at 150/170 BTC. A simple piece of angle iron bolted to the carb port much easier that this wooden setup. (what to do with it later like store it?).
