Appalachian State vs Texas A&M was a game off most radars when the sun rose on College Football's week two Saturday, but by the time it set College Station had been turned upside down after the Mountaineers stunned the Aggies 17-14 at Kyle Field. On Late Kick Live Ep 301 Josh Pate discussed the loss, what it means for each program, and what changes Jimbo Fisher needs to make to the Texas A&M program. With a tough stretch of games coming up, can the Aggies pull the nose up in time to salvage a good season? What does this say about the offense being run and adjustments not being made? I've always felt like Appalachian State was a Dark Horse Team that could surprise people. The Question was WHAT Game they would prove themselves to be. They lost to North Carolina in a Scoring Frenzy, only to Be a Defensive BRICK WALL Against Texas A&M. All I have to say is... Well Done, App State! If They Win Out, who knows how much they can shake up the Rankings. But it is a BIG IF for App State, so Let's see what they can do in Conference Play.

As an App State alumnus, we won because we know what we are as a football team. We have an identity and we stick to it, in spite of having five offensive coordinators in five years. We run the ball and dare you to stop it. Texas A&M is trying to forge an identity despite coaching stability. Our culture won that game for us.

Jimbo’s old Offensive scheme is terrible. Elite high school WR’s and QB’s prospects have gone to A&M to die. They sign and you never hear from them again. Jimbo won at FSU because he had a great player in Jameis Winston. However, any scheme would have been successful with Jameis.

The thing about Jimbo’s offense is he always gameplans for the level of competition he’s facing. Look at the plays he runs when we’re facing bama, Florida, Clemson, North Carolina, etc… and then look at the plays we run against app state, and literally any non conference game. Side note, game planning like that effects the way the way players play. Watch what we do next weekend against Miami, it probably is gonna look nothing close to the plays we were running last week.

I remember as if it were yesterday telling them that they would find out when the season started how hard it is to be successful with that much talent. Everyone hates Coach Sanan but I'm most impressed with his he manages his players. A&M will find out how many players bolt to the Portal. Talent alone is not enough.

What a day for the Sun Belt Conference. Appalachian State beats Texas A&M, Marshall beats Note Dame, and Georgia Southern Bests Nebraska causing Scott Frost to lose his HC job. All 3 wins on the road.... All 3 SBC teams +15 point underdogs..... I think what we might be seeing here with this new NIL stuff is what you see in the NFL - kids get some money in their pocket and forget their job is to play hard on every down. Once they get that bag they just don't try as hard or care as much.

I'd like to see a college team come out and run something like we ran 50 years ago in my jr. High which was the notre dame short punt formation developed by Knute Rockne at Notre Dame in the 1930's We had 3 running backs and a blocking back/reciever with an unbalanced line to the right. We used line power and large strong backs to overpower most of our opponents.

To add to your point. Ohio State had a terrible defense last year, Ryan Day literally cleaned house. Fired many different defensive coordinators, and made a home run hire in Jim Knowles. OSU started as one of the best defenses in the country. Texas A&M's offense has struggled and he still won't change.

That was an atrocious loss from Jimbo Fisher. If he is blown out by Miami next week ( which is highly possible) he should be immediately fired and get the Arkansas/Bret Bielima treatment, forcing him in a lawsuit for the remainder of his contract within the Texas state judicial system. He screwed AM, so they should return the favor.

I'd say the opposite. Notre Dame and A&M would be in according to an expanded field. Based on rankings. Alot of teams could do what App and Marshall did... obviously. Beating those two teams doesn't qualify as entry to the CFP. We get blowouts in a four-team field. Expansion is going to generate even more blowouts. How is that a good thing?
@Decade_of_the_Dawg
@Decade_of_the_Dawg 2 жыл бұрын
It wouldn't matter. The expanded teams will get blown out. Cincinnati is proof of that. It's a money grab and not a way for the top 12 to compete. I don't believe a team with 2-3 loses should even be considered when it's possible the top 4 11-1 or 12-0

Jesus….JP said everything I was thinking about Jimbo. He’s right on the money about Jimbo not wanting to lose his grip of the offensive philosophy. If you pay attention to the way Saban runs things during the game i feel like he’s just over seeing everything but not necessarily directly involved. More like just holding his coordinators accountable. That’s what a head coach should be. But every offensive minded head coach is similar to Jimbo in how it’s their way or the highway when it comes to offense.

Jimbo has shown before that he has what it takes to get to the championship I didn't watch the Game Saturday but I'm assuming that it came down to the wire I'm sure those guys all played ball for the whole 60 minutes too My biggest fear is that the way so many people are coming down on Jimbo he may lose his confidence and start feeling as if his fans and his team are on the brink of giving up on him I seen that happen when he was at FSU. The fans were all about Jimbo and the Seminoles until they lost a game Then they would get butt hurt and throw the whole team under the bus I seriously believe that Texas A&M will be a team to watch in the near future..... If not then they will need to step back and take a look at they're coordinators offense especially...... At the same time I have to say maybe just maybe A&M wasn't that bad at all It was just that Appalachian State was is just that Good I mean after all they sure gave NC State a run for the money that to was a Game for the record books Whan 2 teams match up Someone is bound to lose regardless of how good they are and how good they're playing that is a fact.... I sure would love to see a rematch between Appalachian State and NC believe it would definitely be a different out come the second time around Fact is I'm not at all disappointed in the out come of those two game's I love games when the final isn't decided until the very last minute on the clock My hat is off to those team's for a game well played If they can keep playing like that then we will absolutely see and hear a lot of those teams in the months to come......

This is normal for App State they are known to knock down some bigger programs. And also a&m didn't look good the week before so this would be the right time for Miami to jump on them while they're down.

HA HA HAAAAA! I repeatedly told you Josh and all y’all A&M fans that A&M are choke artists! Yet spring after spring all I hear is A&M is this good that good BLAH BLAH BLAH. It’s FOOLS GOLD. A&M was 0-2 in Mississippi in ‘21 yet we saw 2 videos on Ole Miss and 1 video on Miss State. Prime example that this show runs on VIEWS and not for the love and actual Xs & Os of ball. But don’t worry A&M fans, you’ll go 7-5 and still get allll kinda love and videos in the spring of ‘23 about y’all’s top 5 crutin class and how y’all gonna win the championship in ‘23. CHOKE’EM

Awesome show as always Josh. Jimbo Fisher is Gene Chisik 2.0. Both guys are extremely average head coaches that won championships on the coattails of a generational QB. Somehow Jimbo Fisher has managed to continue to ride the wave of his BCS national championship almost a decade ago. I honestly believe that wave is about to come crashing to shore and he’s going to be all washed up.

A&M giving UT a run for their money (literally) of how to do less with much, much more. A good first step to improving would be for both fan and alumni-bases to realize they don't just "deserve" to have excellent football programs because you throw extravagant amounts of money into them.

I had a friend of mines who is a FSU fan tell me years ago Jimbo was a bad coach, look at the NFL talent he had on that FSU championship team and that’s the only reason they won. Wasn’t because of him at all. He may be no different than Larry Coker

Fisher is not the only one. Mario C at Miami is the same. Old offenses that are vanilla.

Aggies were very much hurting without Bryce Foster at center. Wykoff just wasn’t calling O-line right for the usual identity of the offense which is primarily run-based. Even when the ball is thrown pass protection must be lengthy enough for a 3-4 option play. It wasn’t during the App St. game. They controlled the line on both sides of the ball for the most part, especially after D started getting gassed when you have been on the field 90% of the game

Sorry, I think Josh is spot on pointing out that Jimbo's schemes are antiquated and underutilize the talent available in Aggieland. The defense is gassed because no offense.

@@chrisrecord5625 you’re not wrong. I think there’s a world where it can work: that’s a world with a 1st class TE and RB with good run blocking. Very old school. Problem is you are missing both, not to mention the bad run blocking.

@@asheyoclm1127 Yes, losing Spiller, Green and Wydermyer impacted blocking and perceived offensive threats. Acane is an exciting runner but he missed several blocks that resulted in undue pressure on King.

Some quick research indicates Michigan had one unranked season in the 10 prior seasons before losing to App State and were unranked 6 seasons out of the next 10 after losing to App State. A&M wasn't close to what Michigan was prior to losing to App State, the damage done to A&M may well be far worse than what it did to Michigan as a program. There is NO upside to scheduling App State LOL. Georgia Southern either, for that matter.
